Activity 3 from Ms. Hesketh

Don’t worry be happy!
Here is a great video to get you in a music-loving mood!

Hello!

Hello grade 3’s! I hope your week back at virtual school is going well. We miss your smiling faces very much! You must miss each other too. I know my little 4 year old son misses his buddies at daycare like crazy!

Did you have fun reviewing and/ or learning how to sing “La, Sol and Mi” with the hand signs?

The video of Bobby McFerrin was pretty neat heh? He’s the same guy who sang the famous song “Don’t worry, be happy”- I’ll post that one too below in case you’re curious.

Anyways, the reason why the whole audience could follow along with him in the video is because he taught them a great way to improvise using the “pentatonic” scale. Improvising is another word for doing something without a concrete plan, and we do it all the time in music, it’s so much fun.

What is “pentatonic”?

What do you think pentatonic means? Do you recognize anything in that word? What about penta?

Here’s a hint… these shape names tell you how many sides they have:

Pentagon-5 (“penta” means 5, octagon-8 (“octa”means 8) or hexagon-6 (“hexa” means 6)

Did you ever wonder why an octopus is named and octo-pus, right 8 tentacles!

Ahh…look how many connections you can make when you think about language!!

So a pentatonic scale, is a scale with only 5 notes!

More on the video

Have a look to it again here

Do you see how he teaches the audience 5 notes. He uses his body to jump in the spaces like we would on a piano. When he goes to (our) right he goes higher in pitch, when he goes to (our) left, he goes lower in pitch. (He is starting on the middle DO).

It might look a bit like this if we drew it:

DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI DO

Move and sing

Try following along again with the audience and Bobby McFerrin this time using your whole body and voice, (just singing “ba ba” like the audience for now). Can you mirror him and predict the notes he will sing? Here is the link again

Review

Here is a review of La, Sol and Mi from last week to use in our own improvisations now:

Experiment and create

Now make your own improvised song using “La, Sol, and Mi” with your hand signs to help you. You can try jumping along the imaginary track like Bobby McFerrin does too using this picture.

DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI

Take a video of your improvisation and send it to your music teacher by email with your full name and division in the title.

Happy improvising!

And most importantly…

Don’t worry be happy 🙂 Watch it here

Activity 2

Did you find the first activity on the Week One Page?

Hello you wonderful grade 3’s! Here is a little recording that I (Ms. Hesketh) made just to say hi!

How are you all doing? Things have sure changed in all of our daily lives haven’t they, but it’s nice when some things can stay the same. If you were in Ms. Hesketh’s class you will remember the little songs we sung together like “Escargot, escargot, jusqu’au ligne rouge, escargot, escargot jusqu’à la porte”, or “Doggie, doggie”? Those songs are using La Sol and Mi. We are going to start writing our own songs using La Sol and Mi in the next lessons, but first let’s review and practice!

For fun: Here is a cool video of the amazing Bobby McFerrin getting everyone to sing together. We’ll talk about this more later, but check it out and see if you can join with the audience here

Active listening and Practice:

A) Have a listen and watch this video to practice singing using La, Sol, and Mi here

B) To get really good at using La, Sol and Mi while doing the hand signs, you can try practicing with this helpful video here

C) Now can you try singing Doggie doggie with the hand signs, here is a video to help you practice

D) Now can you practice singing Doggie Doggie using the hand signs and La, Sol and and Mi instead of the words?

E) Here is another La-Sol-Mi song called Lucy Locket. Can you sing the words along with the video here?

F) Now can you sing along to Lucy Locket using your hand signs and La Sol and Mi instead of the words?

Share

Please take a video of you singing one of these songs (Doggie Doggie, Lucy Locket or Escargot) using La, Sol and Mi with the hand signs and send to your music teacher by email with your full name and division in the title!

Happy singing!
