X Marks The Spot

This was so much fun! Creating our very own treasure maps. First we discoloured our maps using tea bags, next we added detail, and last we crumpled, ripped and cut our maps. All this helped make our maps look old and used.

I wonder who will be brave enough to go on an adventure using our maps!

Transforming into Pirates

Some of us were interested in creating maps during explorations, so Ms. Huckle decided it was time to go on a treasure hunt. Maps were created to look like the classroom and our jobs as her pirate crew was to find 5 different pieces of treasure by reading a map.

Ms. Manky’s Invitation Station

Ms. Manky created a fun invitation station for the students to investigate during explorations. They were able to use their sense of sight, touch, and smell with the chocolate play dough.

Weekly Words

Hello Families,

Each week I add 3-4 new sight words to our work wall. During the week we sound out the letters in the words, read each word, talk about the words, and use them in our morning message. I will try post our words below each week for you to see.

Some activities you can do at home with our weekly words:

  • word search in the library books
  • practice copying them
  • practice sounding out the letters
  • secret password (use a word as a password to access a room or the fridge, they have to read the word)
  • make the letters from the word using playdoh or other materials

Our words so far:

  • and, I, the, a
  • is, are, we
  • have, am, me
  • round, up, down
  • to, do, be
  • of, we, in
  • go, play, let
  • big, are, run
  • at, it, for, was
  • his, her, you, on
  • she, he, my, with
  • can, not, get, that
  • once, upon, there, little

Sound – What do you hear?

We have learned that sounds are vibrations by making telephone cups with Ms. Huckle. The next day Ms. Manky created a fun guessing game with different sounds. By listening to Ms. Manky shake 8 different plastic eggs, it was our job to figure out what she hide inside. We had fun drawing and sound printing our guesses and at the very end we opened up each egg.

English Ivy

All this week we have been investigating English Ivy. We have learned it is an invasive species and it hurts our plants and trees by taking over the forest. So we went outside pulled the Ivy as best as we could from the roots trying not to hurt the other plants around. We then carried it into the classroom to be creative with. Before we could do anything we needed to take the leaves off, there was so much Ivy we all needed to work together so Ms. Huckle could soak it over night. The next day we made crowns, bracelets, necklaces and even birds nests.

This was very hard to do. We needed to be patient with ourselves and keep trying!

Plastic Ninjas

We have become the Plastic Ninja’s. We are here to protect Stoney Creek from unwanted garbage!

Last year and this year Ms. Huckle’s class have transformed into the Plastic Ninja’s. We want to keep Stoney Creek clean from garbage. We are learning about eco-bricks and how we can take CLEAN single use plastic and turn it into a block using water bottles. Our hope is to one day take the bricks we have created and use them to make something for our school (planter, garden bed boarder, stools, tables etc.) to reuse these materials instead of sending the garbage off into the world. We also want to continue to be a Plastic Ninja to encourage others to keep their communities clean and safe for everyone and all the species that live there!
