Salmon, Class Store and Journal Creations

Our Salmon started hatching on Feb 21!  We were able to catch some of the alevin as they hatched!  The students were able to observe that the eggs were actually opaque and not orange at all….it is the yolk sac that is attached to the stomach of the alevin (baby salmon) that is actually orange!  The alevin will feed off this yolk sac for the next month as they grow bigger and stronger and grow teeth and fins. As they grow the yolk sac will get smaller and smaller until it is completely absorbed by the baby salmon. At this point, the salmon will need to find it’s own food (when in the wild), but we will give the salmon food while they are in our tank. The students have learned a lot about these first two stages of the salmon life cycle (eggs and alevin). Ask your child what they can teach you! Check out some videos of the salmon hatching and the alevin moving around the bottom of the tank HERE

On Valentine’s Day we played some “Minute-to-Win-It” challenges. One of the challenges was to toss a marshmallow back and forth, while each partner had to try to catch the marshmallow in a cup!  We also went outside and did a Spoon Race where the students had to run/walk while holding a pinkpong ball on a spoon!  They worked in teams of 3!

Class Store- The students have been learning about earning wages (they get paid $1 a day for coming to school on time) and each week we calculate what their wages are for the week and they fill in a bank statement that teaches them about adding a credit (+) (paycheck) to their account, and then they add the new earnings with the last balance to get a new balance. Most items in the store cost $10 so students had to learn about saving money to put towards a desired item. Once they are able to shop, we have students work as bank clerks who will provide a receipt for each purchase made. The students then have to put what they spent in as a debit (-) and then subtract what they spent from their previous balance. Some students are saving up for some big ticket items and have been able to pass on spending in the meantime, whereas other students feel the need to purchase items each time they have enough money to spend!
