November 12, 2024 – Day 1

A reminder that this week is I week. Any student who is not currently passing the term will receive an I report (which will also be sent home and to your counsellor).

English 9H: 

Autumn shaped poems collected at the start of class.

Silent reading.

Creative writing prompts x 3 (for portfolio): if you missed today’s class, please ensure you complete these at home and bring to add to your portfolio; don’t forget to update your Table of Contents!

4) Write about the object that means the most to you in your life right now.

5) Write about the object that you think will mean the most to you at the end of your days.

6) Is there a next life? Write a scene in which you and at least one other person have strong and differing opinions on the matter. Don’t just write a conversation/argument, everyone in the scene must need and want and act.

English 11 CW (Pd 2 and 4):

Hand back short story assessments.

Read Ch 2 in The Jade Peony. If you missed today’s class, it’s essential you read this before class on Thursday as students will be writing an in-class composition referring to Ch 1 & 2 from the novel.

Grammar worksheets. If you missed today’s class, please get these from me next day as I only have them as a hard copy.

English 12: 

Read Act I, sc i and ii in Othello.

Post-secondary fair in the caf.

 

November 7, 2024 – Day 1

English 9H: 

Silent reading.

Self and peer assessments for board game project.

FALL SHAPED POETRY ASSIGNMENT: (if you missed today’s class, please ensure you complete the notes and poem for homework)

´We will head outside for a 15-minute wander to soak in the inspiration all around us to create fall themed shaped poems.

´You will take notes on things you SEE, things you SMELL, and things you FEEL (it’s key to ensure you are observing all these senses and including them in your finished poem)

´Your notes will be submitted along with your final good copy of your fall poem (which should be coloured) and collected at the start of class on Tues, Nov 12th.

English 11CW (Pd 2):

Finish reading Ch 1 in The Jade Peony (TJP). If you missed today’s class, you must complete this reading for homework to be prepared for the next class.

November 5, 2024 – Day 1

English 9H: 

Board game play day! Students get the whole period to play other groups’ TN board games and offer constructive feedback.

English 11 (Pd 2): 

Short story projects collected at the start of class.

Overview: Vancouver’s Chinatown; head tax and general racist policies directed at Chinese immigrants in late 1800’s and early 1900’s Canada as preview to next unit: Wayson Choy’s novel, The Jade Peony.

Hand out copies of the novel and update book cards.

Read to p. 17 in the novel together as a class.

English 12: 

Library period to type up/polish good copy of chapter extension project. All components of this project collected at the end of today’s class.

English 11 (Pd 4): 

Short story projects collected at the start of class.

English 9H:

Remaining class time to work on creative writing prompts #1 and #2 (for portfolio project). You can write in poetry, prose or a combination of both for your creative pieces. If you missed today’s class, please complete these at home and bring them to add to your portfolio so you don’t fall behind.

1) Describe one of your hidden talents and what it says about you.

2) What are your personal superstitions? How did they come to be?

Collect TN texts and update book cards.

English 11CW (Pd 2 & 4): 

Return short story exams for students to see their mark; exams are recollected and kept by me.

Students have remaining class time to work on their short, short story assessment piece:

Additional criteria added for short, short story assessments:

  1. Students are to choose the ONE story they think is their strongest to develop.
  2. Students must add to their story: two examples of figurative language, one properly used semi-colon and two advanced vocabulary words. THESE MUST BE HIGHLIGHTED ON YOUR GOOD COPY.  You must include your word count on the final page of your story, in the bottom right hand corner.
  3. Students must give their story a creative title.
  4. Students are encouraged to exchange their paper with another student to do peer editing to catch mistakes and make suggestions for improvements.

Your short, short story project is due at the start of class on Tues, Nov 5th. You must submit your full evidence of drafting as well as the good copy or your mark will be compromised.

English 12: 

Hand our peer editing check lists.

Students have remaining class time to peer edit a classmate’s paper – this is a graded component that counts towards your final mark. Please ensure you have added your name to the copy that you edit or you will not receive marks for this section.

REMINDER: please go directly to the LIBRARY for class on Tues (Nov 5). Students have the entire period to use the computers and printer there to produce the final copy for this assessment. ALL components will be collected at the end of class on Nov 5th. 

October 30, 2024 – Day 1

Thank you again to Ms Vesik for being the TTOC for me this week while I’m at home, supporting my daughter as she’s recovering from her surgery. She’s doing really well so far – YAY! – and I’ll be back at South on Fri (Nov 1). See you all then! 🙂

English 9H:

October 28, 2024 – Day 1

Thank you to Ms Vesik for being my TTOC for my classes today and on Oct 30th as well. My daughter’s surgery went as well as possible yesterday and she’s home, recovering now, and we’re focusing on getting her back to good health. 🙂

English 9H: 

Students had a work block for their group boardgames. You also have class on Weds to work on your games and manuals; please remember games and manuals are due at the start of class on Fri (Nov 1).

English 11CW (Pd 2 & 4):

Short, short story writing assignment. Students are choosing two prompts and writing two short stories following the criteria given. This is an in class piece of writing and you will have the entire class on Weds to complete your stories. Ms Vesik will collect your work at the end of class Mon and Weds.

If you missed today’s class, please email me to arrange a time to attend flex to make up these compositions.

English 12: 

Work period for MW extension assessments. Students will have all class on Weds too to work on them.

Short story unit final exam.

If you missed today’s class, your parent/guardian must email me to excuse your absence and they need to include a phone number where they can be reached to verify you have missed a major assessment. Providing this has taken place, you can write an alternate exam on Fri, Nov 1/24 at 8:00am. This is the only make up date for this exam and you will need to confirm with me via email that you plan to attend so I can ensure I have a copy of the alternate exam ready to go for you. For absences that are not excused, you will earn zero on the unit final exam.

English 12:

Note taking: properly punctuating and spacing dialogue in your writing –

Use quotation marks to show the exact words of a speaker:“I love you.”

Use a comma to separate the quotation from the rest of the sentence:“I love you,” he whispered.

Sometimes you will use an exclamation mark or a question mark to separate the quotation from the rest of the sentence:“I love you!” he exclaimed.

A quotation may also be placed in the middle of a sentence:

“I love you,” he whispered, “even though you killed my hamster.”

“Even though you aren’t very nice,” he muttered, “I still love you.”

“Hey, dude?” he asked. “Can you get off my foot?”

Remaining class time to begin brainstorming for composition. Students need to ensure they bring materials needed to work for the next two classes on their compositions – this includes a laptop or tablet if you prefer not to work by hand.

October 21, 2024 – Day 1

In class composition comparing TN to the film, “She’s the Man.” Students used their notes taken while watching the film last week to support their writing today.

English 11CW (Pd 2 & 4):

Study block for short story unit. FINAL EXAM is on Weds, Oct 23. If you miss this class and it is not excused, you earn zero for the assessment.

English 12: 

Work block to finish journals #4 and #5, which are due at the start of class Weds.

Please ensure you bring your novels for collection on Weds.

October 17, 2024 – Day 1

English 9H: 

Finish watching “She’s the Man” and taking notes on similarities and differences with Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.

Notes go into portfolios for safe keeping; they will be used to help with your in-class composition on Mon, Oct 21.

Interim reports issued; students are expected to share this report with their parent/guardian.

English 11CW (Pd 2):

English 9H:

  • finish reading Twelfth Night
  • note taking for film to lit comparison and review assignment criteria:
  • “While we watch the film in class, you are responsible for taking notes on various aspects of the film.
    After we have finished the film, you will be writing an in-class composition comparing the film and the text.
    The notes you take while watching the film also count for marks and will be ESSENTIAL to achieving well on the composition.
  • 1) SIMILARITIES: 
  • a) Note aspects where the film stays true to the text.
  • b) Provide THREE examples of this.

 

  • 2) DIFFERENCES:a) Note aspects where the film takes liberties and changes, adds or removes scenes from the text.

    b) Provide THREE examples of this.

    c) Explain WHY you think the director has chosen to change/add/remove these scenes.

  • 3) REVIEW:Which did you prefer – the text or the film? Explain your reasons why.”

Begin watching “She’s the Man,” contemporary film adaptation of Shakespeare’s TN. We will resume the film right at the start of class Thurs so we can get it completed and have your notes ready for the in-class write on Mon, Oct 21.

English 11CW (Pd 2):
