Week 3- Charlotte’s Web Reading (Chapter 8-11)

Hello Division 10,

I’m so proud of the hard work we’ve been doing the past few weeks. As promised, I am posting your work for next week today (Sunday). I’ve had emails from quite a few of you all, my eager beavers, who couldn’t wait to do more work. Here it is:

Charlotte’s Web Chapter 8 & 9

Charlotte’s Web Chapter 10 & 11

TASK THIS WEEK:

This week you will be asked to write a summary of the important things that happened in Chapters 8-11 combined. You have until Friday to complete your paragraph and post it on this website. Please do not send it in to my email address as I will be marking it right from here. It should be around 300 words or so. Once again, you will read chapters 8-11, then write one large paragraph about the important things that happened. I hope this makes more sense now.

  8. Niko says:

Chap 8 is mainly about how much Fern enjoys being at Uncle Homer’s barn. She also talks about how much she enjoys talking to the animals. At the end of Fern and moms chat mom is deeply concerned about Fern because she doesn’t think animals talk. Chap 9 is about Wilber thinking that he can do what Charlotte can do. Chap 9 is also about Charlotte thinking about a plan to help Wilber survive winter ❄️. This chapter also explains that Charlotte will take things slow and does not rush.

  9. Samskruthi says:

    Ch9 summary

    Paragraph 1

A Talk at Home and Wilbur’s Boast

Fern was talking to her mother about the animals and Charlotte and what they told her. Mrs. Arable was very worried when Fern mentioned that the animals spoke to her and to each other. Wilbur said he could spin a web just as good as Charlotte but said he didn’t know how so Charlotte said ‘’ I’ll teach you’’. Wilbur scrambled to the top of the manure pile and Charlotte told him to crouch down and make an attachment with his spinnerets and hurl himself into space. Wilbur did exactly what Charlotte told him to but it didn’t work so he tried it with a piece of string but that didn’t work either so they gave up.

    Paragraph 2

    An Explosion and The Miracle

Fern and Avery Arable came to the farm together to play. They played on the swing for a while then Fern went to check on Wilbur and Avery followed her. Then Avery saw Charlotte and tried to capture her but he tripped over the fence, crashed into Wilbur’s trough and broke the rotten egg. When the egg broke a horrible smell came out of it and saved Charlotte’s life. Charlotte wove the words ‘’some pig’’ on her web. When Mr. Zuckerman saw it he went to the minister and the minister promised to not tell anyone about it but he did. So soon Wilbur was famous. Wilbur hated it, Charlotte hated it and all of the animals hated it because they liked to be alone together.

  14. Samskruthi says:

    Ch10 summary
When the egg that didn’t hatch, the goose and the gander gave the egg to Templeton. Fern and Avery Arable came for a visit, Avery saw Charlotte. He wanted the spider. Fern tried to stop Avery, but he didn’t listen to Fern. Avery lost his balance and where Templeton kept the egg broke. The smell of the rotten egg filled the barn. Wilbur had to tell all the other animals the story again and again.

  15. Niko😃😃😃 says:

Chap 10 the main Idea of this chapter is about that whole stink bomb 💣 💨 problem after the incident Charlotte was very thankful that the egg 🥚 never hatched 🐣 although now the whole barn was a stink bomb 💣 💨 after that Charlotte hadn’t finished the plan so for the next few hours she stood still and thought 💭 and thought 💭 and thought 💭 then she started weaving a web she was still weaving at midnight.

  16. Lauryn Chiu says:

    Hi Mr. Wu,
around how many words should the whole thing be? Because I wrote a bit too, too, too, too much 🙁

  17. Niko😃😃😃😃 says:

I think I used way to much detail on chap 10🤨🤨🤨

  18. Samskruthi says:

    Ch11 summary
When Lurvy came to feed Wilbur, Lurvy saw the words on Charlotte’s web. It said the words “SOME PIG”. Lurvy immediately called Mr. Zuckerman and both of them were shocked. Mr. Zuckerman called Edith, his wife. Soon they told the minister about the words on Charlotte’s web. After that the barn was crowded. Wilbur had 4 meals instead of 3. The barn was so crowded that Mr. Zuckerman and Lurvy forgot to do other things, like make blackberries into jam.

  19. Logan Cheng says:

I think these are some of the important things that happened in Chapters 8 to 11.
Now that it was summer, Fern did not have school so she sat at the barn to watch Wilbur and all the other animals every afternoon. She feels the animals are her friends. Somehow Fern can understand what the animals are saying to each other. Fern’s mom was really worried about Fern, but Fern’s dad and her doctor seem to think it could be that Fern has sharper ears than a lot of people or is listening more carefully.
Another thing is when Wilbur tries to make a web he can’t because he does not have the parts of a spider and he did not have enough string.
Also, you know how Mr. Zuckerman is going to kill Wilbur at Christmas? Well Charlotte is not going to let that happen so she is making a plan to stop Mr. Zuckerman from killing Wilbur. Without Charlotte Wilbur would be killed.
Seven of the goose’s eggs hatched but one did not hatch so the goose gave it to Templeton. Fern’s brother, Avery, almost killed Charlotte but a rotten egg cracked and made Avery and Fern run back home because it smelled so bad. Avery didn’t get to kill Charlotte. The rotten egg was the egg that the goose gave to Templeton.
Someone named Edith and Mr. Zuckerman saw Charlotte’s web that said some pig on it but they didn’t know that it was part of Charlotte’s plan. Edith thought that Wilbur was not an ordinary pig.
Mr. Zuckerman and Edith thought Wilbur was a solid pig. I don’t know why but they said that. So many people came to the barn to see Wilbur. Even the minister came. The minister also asked Mr. Zuckerman what Wilbur’s name was. Mr. Zuckerman told the minister that his niece named the pig Wilbur.

  20. Liam says:

    Chapter 8 and 9

There are 8 eggs that the goose had and only 7 of them hatched but 1 egg didn’t hatched. Goose told Templeton she didn’t want that and he took it away. Mr. Arable wondered if the animals can talk. He said maybe they do talk, maybe our ears aren’t as sharp as Fern.
The animals talk to each other Charlotte said that she can think better if she thinks alone. Wilbur have concern about Charlotte, Wilbur care for Charlotte.

  21. Nathaniel Decaigny says:

    Charlottes Web Chapters 8 – 11

At breakfast time Fern told her parents that the goose’s eggs had hatched. She also told them that one egg did not hatch leaving only 7 baby geese. The egg that didn’t hatch Templeton took the egg and brought it to his home. Ferns parents asked her who is Templeton, and she told them Templeton is a rat and that the other farm animals do not like him. Fern told her parents Charlotte made an announcement that the gooses eggs where hatching. then her parents said who is Charlotte, Fern replied Charlotte is a spider.

In the barn Charlotte was fixing her web because when flies or little incests get caught in her web they make holes in her web. Wilbur said he wants to make a web. Charlotte tells Wilbur to go to the highest point in the barn and jump and make a string of web. Wilber failed, he then went to Templeton if he had any string. Templeton had white dirty string, Wilbur then asked if Templeton could tie the string around his tail. Once the string was tied to his tail to tried jumping again, but he forgot to tie the other end of the string to a pole and fell once again on the ground. When it was getting close to night time Wilbur remembered that Mister Zuckerman would kill him close to Christmas. Charlotte told Wilbur not to worry she has a plan to save Wilbur.

In the morning charlotte was thinking about how to help Wilbur escape the barn. She thought she could trick the humans because they are not as smart as bugs are. Fern and Avery where playing at the barn. They had a rope swing and it was like they where flying in the air. Then when Fern and Avery where getting tired of playing, they went to Wilburs enclosure in the barn, Avery noticed Charlotte and said he was going to capture the spider. When he was trying to capture Charlotte, Avery fell on top on Templeton’s house. The rotten egg that Templeton had broke, and everyone was smelling something really stinky. All the animals wanted to know how the egg broke. Wilbur told the animals that Avery fell on the rotten egg causing the disgusting smell.

When Larry was feeding Wilbur, Larry noticed Charlottes web had read “Some Pig”. Larry went inside and told everyone. Everybody went outside to read the words on the web. They talked to a minister, about the web and mentioned not to say anything. On Sunday the news spread everywhere and people where coming from all over to see Wilbur and to read the words on Charlottes web. People came all in the day and night. Fern was happy that the plan was working, but she didn’t like all the people around. Fern liked just being with her animal friends alone.

  22. Alekay Singh says:

Mrs. Arable was worried about Fern. The reason Mrs. Arable was worried about Fern was because Fern talked about the animals talking. Mrs and Mr. Arable did not know the animals could talk. Mrs. Arable was going to contact Dr. Dorian. Later on, Wilbur tried to spin his own web. He failed. Wilbur was intrepid and tried again. He failed again. The lamb called Wilbur smelly. Avery tried to kill Charlotte but he fell on the unhatched egg. The egg hatched. Now there was a stinky smell in the barn.

Charlotte finally thought of a plan to save Wilbur. Charlotte’s plan was to weave the words “Some Pig” on to her web so Lurvy would see it and not kill Wilbur. Charlotte’s plan worked and people from all around came to see Wilbur and Charlotte’s weaving. Fern liked that Wilbur was getting more attention however she liked it better when she could spend more time alone with the animals.

  23. Lazar says:

    THE SUMMARY – Chapter 8-11 Charlotte’s Web
So far in the book the goose gave an egg to the mouse Templeton case the egg didn’t hatch and Charlotte and Wilbur are friends. Fern’s parents are worried that Fern is talking to the animals and Charlotte is teaching Wilbur how spiders make a web. Charlotte teaches Wilbur how to make a web and Wilbur is trying to make a web. After Wilbur tries to make a web, Charlotte tells Wilbur he can not make a web which makes Wilbur sad. Wilbur is scared from getting killed Charlotte makes a plan. Some people don’t know this but Charlotte is treating Wilbur like a mother and Charlotte needs to do the plan alone. Charlotte promised that she will save Wilbur’s life. She tells Wilbur the plan that they are playing a trick on Zuckerman. One day Fern got the itches so they had to go off swing and then they went to go see Wilbur.
While there, Avery tried to catch Charlotte, Avery balanced on one leg and then Avery lost balance and fell and broke Templeton’s egg. The egg was rotten and made Avery run away. At night Charlotte started her web. The next morning Zuckerman went to check the barn and then the web said …. SOME PIG!!!! Zuckerman was wondering about the pig, then Zuckerman looked pale and frightened. The next day people came to see the web and the pig. Everyone was impressed. Everyone knows that Zuckerman has a wonderful pig.

  24. Tina k says:

In chapter 8 Fern explains to her mother that the seven goslings have hatched in the barn. She tells Mr. and Mrs. Arable that first there were eight eggs, but sadly one egg didn’t hatch. The goose told Templeton he can take the egg. Arable looked quizzed when she heard Templeton. After, she asked Fern who Templeton was. Fern responded and said he was a rat and no one in the farm liked him.
In chapter 9 Wilbur wants to spin a web he asks Charlotte how to spin a web. Charlotte is happy to help Wilbur. She teaches Wilbur, but no rope comes out. Then he asks Templeton for a string. He jumped in the air and landed with a thud. Then a lamb came after and told Wilbur that he was the smelliest creature in the barn. Charlotte stood up for Wilbur and told the lamb to leave.
In chapter 10 Charlotte comes with an idea to play a trick on Zuckerman. She thinks if she can fool a bug then Charlotte thought she surely can fool a man. She thought people are not as smart as bugs and are very gullible. Meanwhile Mrs. Zuckerman had baked a blueberry pie. Avery had found a frog. He had brought it inside and placed it in the drainboard.
In chapter 11 Lurvy comes with the pig’s breakfast. Then notices the web neatly woven in block letters. It said: Some Pig! Lurvy felt weak and nervous. Lurvy stared harder at charlotte’s web. He walked back to the house and called Mr. Zuckerman he showed him the web. Mr. Zuckerman called Mrs. Zuckerman. They all murmured. “Some Pig”.
Mr. Zuckerman drove to the minister’s house he explained to the minister a miracle had happened on the farm. Long before Sunday came, the news spread all over the country.
Everybody knew that Mr. and Mrs. Zuckerman had a wonderous pig.

  25. Meyri says:

    Chapters 8-11 summary
The full meaning of the chapters are realy intresting. It starts on a sunday morning when Mr. and Mrs.Arable and fern were sitting at breakfast in the kitchen When fern said “Did you know that Uncle Homer’s had hatched?” and then she told everything about the barn and after she finished Fern’s mother was quite worried to hear animals talking at the barn but Mr. Arable said she has a strong imagination. Then at the farm Wilbur started a strange conversation was about Charlotes hairy legs and Charlote said she had seven sections -the coxa, the tronchanter, the femur, the patella, the tibia, the metatarsus, and the tarsus, After that they started talking for a long time.
Then they started to talk about spinning a web so Charlote told him all of the instructions to Wilbur then Wilbur followed all of the istructions and ut didn’t work so he said “what am i doing wrong?” “nothing”said Charlote then Wilbur asked the Tempelton if he could borrow a string and he said yes and after Wilbur very kindly asked the rat if he could tie it on his tail. After that he tried again and again but still it didn’t work then Wilbur🐷 got sad🙁😔and after Charlote🕷said”why are you so said it’s ok you get 3 full meals everyday what do you need a web for??”🐷said “yeah” then 🐷 said “do you want to know where i want to be right now” “where?” ” in the forest looking for beechnuts anď truffles and delectable roots, pushing leaves aside with my wonderful strong nose, searching and sniffing….”then they got rudely interrupted by a lamb saying how bad 🐷 smelled.Witch was very rude to Wilbur. Then he got ready for bed then he said i don’t want to die and they talked for a few more minutes and then they said good night and went to sleep.

After day and after day the spider waited, headdown, for an idea to come to her.then 🐷 came and said any ideas and Charlote said yes we can put a trick on him they won’t kill you. Then day Fern and Every came for a visit and they played on the swing when they got tired of the swing they went back home .
That night Charlote was working on something and she stayed up all night working on it.The next morning was foggy so you could see Charlotes web when Lurvy came to give Wilbur his breakfast he saw something on the web it said SOME PIG on it Lurvy was shocked he went and brang Mr.Zuckerman and they were both shocked then Mr.Zuckerman told Mrs.Zuckerman about it.After that he got dressed in his best clothes and went to the minister and told him everything and the minister said don’t tell anybody about this just keep it a secret. but before sunday the whole country knew about it an every day people came to see the farm to see Wilbur and Charlote’s web Fern was very happy but only Wilbur got all of the attention they didn’t care about anything else and Fern didn’t like it to be so crowded she wantad to be with her animal frinds alone.

  26. Adriano Farley says:

    In chapter 8
Basically Fern and Mr Arable were talking about the goose having 8 eggs but one of them not hatching, and the goose took it away also they were talking about how much Wilbur likes Charlotte then fern told mr arable what charlotte said when the first gossling poked his little head out and theys are the words: i am sure that everyone of us here in the barn cellar will be gratified to lean after four weeks of unremitting effort and practice on the part of the goose she now has something to show for it also Ferns mother worries about Fern talking to animals
    Chapter 9
Wilbur said charlotte’s legs are hairy and she said that it’s for a good reason and wilbur trying to spin a web then templeton got out a string then he tied the string to wilbur’s tail then jumped but he could still not spin a web then he said I don’t want to die and charlotte said of course you don’t all the animals don’t want to die then he said are you going to not let them kill me then charlotte said you have to stand up for yourself
    Chapter 10
Day after day after day charlotte couldn’t think of an idea that will save wilbur’s life and she knew a fly would come to her web then an idea would pop to her brain then an idea came to one tiny tiny brain cell in charlotte’s brain it was the simplest idea ever and if it could fool a bug it can definitely fool a human then avery and fern went to mr zuckerman house and he has the best swing in the country it was a rope attached to a beam then they wanted to go to the barn so they did and avery found charlotte and she was going to spider-nap her but she fell
    Chapter 11
It was a foggy day at the barn. Things were dripping with water. Also charlotte’s web was a true masterpiece when it was foggy and if you looked super carefully you would see two words in the web and it said SOME PIG! Then lurvy found out and dropped to the ground on his knees and told mr zuckerman then they just talked about how unusual they are and it’s a miracle and stuff

  27. Russell says:

    Chapter 8,9,10 and 11

Fern was telling her mom about the animal’s at the barn talking and her mom thinks she’s gone crazy. Later at the barn Wilbur was talking to Charlotte about how hairy her legs are. Then Charlotte told Wilbur about all 7 parts of a spider’s leg. Wilbur was arguing about if he could spin a Web or not. Then Wilbur tried to but failed badly. After failing to spin a web Wilbur started to feel tired. So he said I’m going to bed ok he heard then Wilbur closed his eyes and was thinking about his thoughts and remembered that the farmer’s will kill him for food so then he talk to Charlotte about how he doesn’t want to die.Charlotte promised that she would not let the farmers get to him and that she will think of a plan to save Wilbur. Charlotte was waiting and waiting for idea then she got one. Fern and Avery came to the farm. Fern came with a crown of daisy’s on her head and Avery came with a frog. They both came to the farm to play on the swing at the farm. They both took turns playing on the swing. After the swings they went to Wilburs pen. Avery saw Charlotte and he wanted to capture Charlotte so he could have her as a pet. He found a little candy box on the ground and a stick. He used the stick to try to put Charlotte in the candy box but he tripped on the pig pen and fell on Templeton’s house. When Avery fell on Templeton’s house the unhatched egg broke and it scared the kids away good thing for Charlotte. When Avery tried to take Charlotte he destroyed Charlotte’s web. So with the destroyed web Charlotte used her plan to save Wilbur by making a distraction. By making the distraction she put the words SOME PIG in the middle of her web. When Lurvy came to feed Wilbur and he saw something in the corner of his eye. It was the word some pig he told the farmers and the farmers told other people and it spread all over the country. People started to come from all over the world and Wilbur got famous thanks to Charlotte.

  28. Lauryn chiu says:

    Charlotte’s Web Chapter 8-11

For chapter 8 and 9 summaries together, Fern was utterly unusual to her parents when it came to Fern talking about animals in particular. In the morning, she would talk non-stop about everything that happened at the barn, all about Charlotte, Templeton, the goose and all the other animals. Also that the goose eggs hatched and that the goose told Templeton she no longer wanted her eighth egg because it did not hatch and he could have it. Ferns parents thought her imagination was so out of this world she would act so weird but Mr. and Mrs. Arable would totally not get what Fern was even trying to say about the conversation about animals. Mr. Arable said that the next time he went to visit Dr. Dorian, he would talk about Ferns unusualness and that she was acting super weird whenever she was either talking about animals or being around animals. Charlotte told Wilbur she was working on a plan that will be very successful. She found out that humans are very gullible and she indeed had a very good plan to save Wilbur’s life. Wilbur himself was very pleased to hear Charlotte’s good plan. Wilbur asked Charlotte why her legs are so hairy. Charlotte told Wilbur all the different parts of her very hairy legs. Charlotte told Wilbur that she needed these legs to spin a web and catch food which took a lot of hard work besides Charlotte Wilbur on the other hand got three meals each day and he did not even need to move one single hoof. So Wilbur tried to spin a web to impress Charlotte but it did not work as well as he expected. The lamb made fun of Wilbur’s stinky smell but the lamb did not get a chance anymore because Charlotte stood up for Wilbur. At night Wilbur kept finding excuses to go get a drink of milk and get bits of little pieces from his trough. Wilbur sparked up like fireworks started to race out to his yard but Charlotte told Wilbur this phrase “Never hurry never worry!”, “Slowly, Slowly and that’s what he did for sure. Animals smelled the familiar scent of strong tobacco. Wilbur suddenly thought of death and began to tremble with fear. He talked to Charlotte softly and told her he did not want to die. Charlotte understood him and then she had a great plan to save Wilbur’s life.

Chapters 10 and 11 summaries together, Day after day Charlotte waited for the idea to pop up in her head to save Wilbur’s life knowing that she promised him to find a plan to keep him alive she was determine to keep her promise. Charlotte is natural at being patient. Charlotte was waiting for a fly to fly into her web so then she waited patiently. One morning almost to the middle of July she thought of an awfully simple idea. She said to herself “why how perfectly simple!” She was going to save Wilbur’s life by playing a trick on Zuckerman. She thought that if she could fool a bug she could fool a man because people are not as smart as bugs. Wilbur walked into his yard and asked what Charlotte was thinking about. She told Wilbur that people are very, very gullible. Wilbur asked what does that mean so Charlotte told him just about it all. Summer was half gone and Charlotte new she did not have much time. The next morning Avery with a frog in his hand walking in the yard followed by Fern. Fern had daisies in her hair. The two kids reached Mrs. Zuckerman just in time for blueberry pie but Avery’s frog jumped into the soapy water. Aunt Edith shouted for the two kids to go outside. Fern and Avery ran to the swing to play. Zuckerman feared that some child would fall off but no child ever actually did. The two kids took turns for one hour. When they walked back Avery noticed the spider web and then saw Charlotte. Avery said he was going to capture the spider. Avery wobbled when he tried to get Charlotte then he toppled overs Wilbur’s trough which the unhatched egg was under. The explosion stunk Fern screamed Avery jumped there was a disgusting stink. Fern was crying and ran toward the house Avery ran after her holding his nose tightly. Later this morning all the animals came outside and there were many complaints about the smell. Wilbur told the story over and over again. The goose was proud of her adventure. Templeton was so sad of course. Lurvey came and the awful smell caught his nose. He buried all Templeton’s gadgets. Wilbur ate heartily he got leftovers of all kinds. Charlotte was at work but no one noticed her. The next day was wet when Lurvey came he noticed Charlotte’s web and stared at the web even harder there in the middle of the web neatly woven wrote SOME PIG Lurvey felt weak. He uttered a short prayer to himself. Instead of giving Wilbur his breakfast he went to get Mr. Zuckerman to see this miracle. Mr. Zuckerman asks what was wrong but Lurvey just told him to see for himself the two men walked to Wilbur’s pen without a single word then they got there and stared at Wilbur and then Charlotte. Mr. Zuckerman walked back to the house and called Edith and then they both sat on chairs. Mrs. Zuckerman looked very frightened and then Mr. Zuckerman started and told her that she has a very unusual pig. Mr. Zuckerman said that something mysterious happened. Very, Very mysterious. Mr. Zuckerman went to the minister’s house to tell him about the miracle that happened on the farm that day. The minister said not to tell anyone else about the miracle. The news spread all over the country and from day and night. People were coming in all sorts of cars and trucks and Zuckerman was busy from day to night entertaining all the guest so they could see all that happened at the farms. Wilbur felt important getting all the attention from the people. Mr. Zuckerman ordered Lurvy to increase Wilbur’s meals to four meals a day.

She went in to tell her mom what the animals had said but her mom interrupted her and told her it was time for school and she can continue when school is done. After school, Fern told her mom everything. She knew the farmer was going to kill Wilber. Charlotte was thinking of a plan on how to save Wilbur from getting turned into bacon, ham and sausage. Everyone cheered because they were thankful that the egg didn’t hatch.

Charlotte’s plan was to write SOME PIG on her web. She got Wilber to stand under the web to trick the humans into thinking that Wilber was a good pig. Mr. Zukermen saw the web, then he talked to his wife about the Miracle that had just happened. They all went outside to see the Miracle. The big news spread fast and a lot of people were going to the barn to see Charlotte’s Web and Wilber. Most of the attention was in the pigpen and Charlotte’s plan to save Wilber was a success.
