Research a religion:

Directions: You may work in groups up to 3. You will be  assigned one major world religion. The choices are: Judaism, Christianity, Catholicism, Islam, Agnosticism, Atheism, Anglicanism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Scientology. You will become travelers along the Silk Road, the famous trade route linking China and Europe. Your goal is to convince your fellow travelers (the rest of the class) that your religion is one that should be respected, even if they don’t end up following it. Keep in mind that goods and products were not the only things that passed down the Silk Road… religion and ideas did too! The goal of the activity you are about to do (spreading a religion) would have taken place many times throughout the centuries-long history of the Road.

Activity: You will be given a blank tri-fold brochure. This brochure will be used to convince your fellow travelers about the importance of your assigned religion. Keep in mind that the more creativity, thought, and effort you put into your board, the more likely your fellow travelers will respect your religion.

Tri-Fold Requirements: Look at the diagram below to see where different requirements should be placed on your brochure. While these are the minimum, don’t be afraid to go above and beyond!

4 images minimum – one must be of the symbol

Explanation of Each Section:

LEFT PANEL

Salvation/Afterlife: This is where you explain to travelers what the goal of your religion is. If they are good people, what happens to them? What happens when they die?

Stats: How many people practice your religion worldwide? In which countries or areas is your religion widely practiced?

CENTER PANEL

Religion Name: The name of your assigned religion should be at the top, in the center, and easy to see

Key Beliefs: What are the key beliefs of your religion? However, don’t just give the name of your religion’s key beliefs. Make sure you explain what they mean. A person interested in your religion is going to want to know details!

Deities: Does your religion have a god or gods? If none, then tell why, If there are multiple ones, list the major ones and give their roles. If only one, what is the name given to the deity? What role do they play in peoples’ lives?

Holy Text Excerpts: Your group will be given the holy text of your religion. You need to skim through the text and find an excerpt or excerpts that would appeal to someone who might be interested in following your religion.  This is not something that should be done in 30 seconds. One group member should really search hard for an appealing verse or verses to include. Explain the significance of the verse or verses that you chose.

Symbol: What is the symbol of your religion? Where does it come from? What does it mean? You must also have a picture of your symbol on the board.

RIGHT PANEL

Holidays: What are the major holidays that your religion celebrates? What customs and traditions are a part of these holidays? List them individually and explain their importance.  Try and make the holidays sound appealing while making sure the traveler will understand why they are important.

Founder/History: Give the background information about your religion? Where was it founded? Who started the religion? Give a short biography of the founder.  If no single founder exists (Hinduism) describe things about its structure such as the caste system.

Race- #3 Film Study movie (on racism)

Storyline:

In the 1930s, Jesse Owens is a young man who is the first in his family to go to college. Going to Ohio State to train under its track and field coach, Larry Snyder, the young African American athlete quickly impresses with his tremendous potential that suggests Olympic material. However, as Owens struggles both with the obligations of his life and the virulent racism against him, the question of whether America would compete at all at the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany is being debated vigorously. When the American envoy finds a compromise persuasive with the Third Reich to avert a boycott, Owens has his own moral struggle about going. Upon resolving that issue, Owens and his coach travel to Berlin to participate in a competition that would mark Owens as the greatest of America’s Olympians even as the German film director, Leni Riefenstahl, locks horns with her country’s Propaganda Minister, Josef Goebbels, to film the politically embarrassing fact for posterity.

Believe In Yourself – Inspirational Speech – Transcript:

Why is it we don’t believe it ourselves?
That as soon as things get tough in our lives we start doubting ourselves
We start thinking that we may not make it
Stressing, worrying, imagining things that may go wrong in the future

We need to understand, the human mind is the most powerful tool we own, but it can also be the most DESTRUCTIVE
And we need to learn how to take control of the direction of our mind and our emotions

You mind is going to provide you your greatest challenges in life, because it is so powerful
So, if you can conquer your mind, you can pretty much conquer anything else around you, literally.

When writing the story of your life – make sure YOU hold the pen
Make sure not only that you hold the pen, but you write the script from your heart. Be brave when writing your script, it’s your story and there are NO LIMITS to what you can have, what you can do or what you can be.

How bad do you want it?
You have to prove it to yourself that you want it bad enough, it’s gotta hurt you not to get it.
And that’s when you’re going to learn to conquer your mind. Your mind will no longer be able to say no, because your inner heart and mind are aligned, and now NOTHING can stop you!

It’s easy to be all positive and consistent when everything is going your way
But that’s not life, that’s not realistic!
Are you going to be one of the very few to stand up when things are tough, when everything is going against you.
Will you be able to believe in what’s right, and what brings results to your life.
THAT’S WHEN YOUR CHARACTER WILL SHINE!
THAT’S WHEN YOUR STORY WILL BE BORN!
YOUR story is valuable!
YOUR story of success!

You can’t build a STORY if you stop now. If you give up.
The world is full of people who gave up.
THE WORLD NEEDS HOPE. WE ALL DO.
The world needs you to STAND UP – to fight through your challenging moments,
To SHINE through the dark times
To love through the hate, and to be the difference in an indifferent world.
To BELIVE IN YOURSELF

Most people are bloated with ordinary thoughts and mindsets
They’re so full of average that they have no more appetite
But you have to have an appetite for EXTRAORDINARY
Beyond what people are doing – think beyond them

THERE WILL ALWAYS BE DOUBTERS, and people below you, and people trying to put you down so they can feel higher, but you gotta STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF.
BELIEVE in your mind. Have some tunnel vision.
Then one day you will have your moment.
Because ANYTHING is possible if you just BELIEVE!

FEED your DREAMS.
If you can suffer through setbacks, through pain, RISE up with resilience once again, and again, and again!
ONE DAY THIS WORLD WILL TAP YOU ON THE SHOULDER & say…
“This is your time to shine”
YOU CAN HAVE BE AND DO ANYTHING YOU WANT
You just have to believe

Assignment #1- Homelessness (before movie) worksheet

Chris Gardner – The non-movie character (After watching movie) worksheet

Discussion Questions:

Media Literacy:

  1. There is something not quite realistic about what’s shown in the movie. What is it?
  2. Mr. Gardner deserves praise for his decision to keep his son with him. However, the story told by the movie avoids dealing with the ethics of the decision made by Mr. Gardner to try to become wealthy as fast as he could even though it meant subjecting himself and his son to the very real risks involved in being homeless. Little Chris was definitely a stakeholder in his father’s decision. What does his father’s decision to become homeless look like from Little Chris’ point of view?
  3. Why did the screenwriters change the story?
  4. One critic of this movie said that “The Pursuit of Happyness” and films like it ” . . . assuage the guilt of the privileged . . . and send the message that we who have ‘made it’ into the middle and upper classes are there simply because of our superior virtue and intelligence. It is far more flattering to attribute our wealth to superior character and abilities, . . . than to factor in inequitable tax codes, unequal access to health care, discriminatory education, slave-wages, international trade agreements and inheritance laws that protect privileged races and classes.”The Stories We Tell: films like ‘Pursuit of Happyness’ assuage the guilt of the privileged by Jeremy V. Cruz, America, April 30, 2007. Do you agree or disagree? Explain your reasons.

Homelessness:

  1. Is it true that most people who live in poverty don’t work hard and don’t apply themselves?
  2. How is the version of homelessness in the movie different than what the homeless really experience?
  3. There are some developed countries in which there are fewer homeless people than in the U.S. Why are there so many homeless people in the U.S.?
  4. Is there any excuse for a society to fail to provide enough shelters for homeless children or for veterans? Is there any excuse for a country to fail to provide enough shelters for all of its homeless citizens?
  5. Has this movie changed your view of the homeless? If so, what are the changes? If not, why not?

Here are the 5 steps required to complete your ongoing project:

During this stage, you are asked to plan carefully and create a draft before you start your project. Remember, I am always here to help you reach your goal and do not be afraid to ask me questions along the process. I encourage you to ask myself or your classmates for help whenever you need.
  4. Create- During this stage, you are asked to carefully and thoughtfully execute your ‘plan.’ Before starting, make sure you present your ‘plan’ to Mr. Wu, so that I can help you tweek your ideas and ensure that you won’t have to re-do anything.
