Dear Parents,

Today, we started off with going over any questions that students had for Lesson 4 of Unit 1 of the Math Textbook. Then, students played some addition/subtraction/multiplication-based games with dice depending on their Math level. If students wanted a challenge, I introduced more dice and changed the game slightly for them as the algebra equations from the textbook are fairly basic.

After, I had students self-test themselves on a piece of paper in mapping the provinces and territories on a blank map and then we matched capital cities to their provinces/territories as well. Students peer-marked the map and gave it back – this will be an indicator of how prepared each student is for the province/territories quiz tomorrow. They will need to be able to map the provinces/territories and match the capital city to the province tomorrow on the quiz.

Following recess, we did a reading for Health on Canada’s New Food Guide and talked about different foods that would be in the various food groups. Students had to design an ideal breakfast, lunch, and dinner (that they would actually be open to eating) and talk about why it is healthy in a few sentences.

Before lunch, we did some script reading as a class and a little bit of acting out for Drama. We read, “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.” We will continue to work on reading with expression, getting into the character, and acting out scenes in Drama.

After lunch, we talked about keeping our desktops clean after lunch and staying in our seats as well as there was some inappropriate behaviour at lunch. Students who did not clean up their tabletops were kept in during free time to help clean the classroom in order to really reinforce the importance of contributing to a clean classroom to learn in. Right before that, we did our Daily 5 stations with guided reading, a new spelling sheet, and students wrote about what they would do if they had superpowers.

At the very end of the day, we started our “Starry Night” directed drawing where students follow a Youtube video to re-create Vincent Van Gogh’s famous painting.

There will be a Unit 1 Math Test on Tuesday, October 12th after the long weekend on all of the lessons in Chapter 1: Patterning of the textbook. Students are encouraged to start to practice and review.

Have a good night!

Sincerely,

Ms. Wilks
