The Most Magnificent Thing Project

Students at Rosser spent the last two weeks working on a school-wide project based on the book, “The Most Magnificent Thing”.  Students also got inspiration from other books including:

Students began with an idea which they then developed through a planning sheet. They used a variety of materials to create their own individual ‘Magnificent Thing’. These were displayed in the gym on Friday, January 13th afternoon.  I hope you had a chance to come by to see them.  If not, here are some pictures:

Email issues

Hi all,

The District is upgrading all of our email passwords, etc. and, as such, I am currently unable to access my email.  I am hoping that this will get rectified tomorrow.  If you have anything urgent to contact me about, please send a note with your child (in their planner), or contact me at school personally.  I will send out a group email to let you know when I am able to use my school email again.

Thanks for your understanding.

Upcoming Pumpkin Patch Field Trip

On Tuesday, October 6th, our class (along with Division 6 – Kindergarten) will be going to the Laity Pumpkin Farm.  A notice about this went home today.  Please consider driving for this trip as we will need to cancel if we don’t get enough parent drivers.  It is a fun trip for everyone.  We get to enjoy the petting zoo, a tractor ride, wander through the forest displays, and explore the corn maze.  Students also get to choose a pumpkin (one the size that they can carry on their own).  This pumpkin will be sent home with students for their own personal use.

We go on this trip rain or shine so please ensure that your child is dressed for the weather.  They also need to bring two grocery bags (to carry their pumpkin) and their car seats for the drive there with parent volunteers.

Welcome back to school!!

It has been a good start-up to the new school year this year.  As we are about to enter our third week (our second full week together as a class) the students are beginning to settle in nicely.  We have been working on learning the routines of Grade 1.  We are hoping to have our weekly schedule finalized this upcoming week at which point a copy will be sent home, as well as updated on the Weekly Schedule page on this blog.

Most of the start-up paperwork (forms and supply money) have already been returned!  Thank you to all who have done so.  If you have not yet returned these forms (and money) please do so as soon as possible.  The office needs to get the class verification paperwork updated for the new year and the school supplies have been purchased and are already being put to good use.

I have updated the Upcoming Events page on this blog.  I am looking forward to meeting all the parents this week during our Intake Interviews.  This is a great opportunity for you to share with me your thoughts and other information about your child.

A notice about the Laity Pumpkin Patch field trip will be coming home soon.

If you have any questions or comments you could: drop me an email; write a note and put it in the front plastic pocket of your child’s planner; or chat with me after school.

I am looking forward to a great school year with your children.

Mrs. S. Temple

Welcome back!!!

It is very nice to be back to school after a very disruptive situation for all!

I have really enjoyed getting to know my new (and reconnect with my old) students!  Parent interviews this week were also great!  I love getting to know the most important people in my students’ lives.

It has been a very hectic two weeks but we are now getting into the swing of things.  The classroom is now fully set up again, school supplies are all in place, and students are getting used to the routines.

I am thrilled to have in my class this year some of my former grade ones as I am enrolling a grade one and two class for this school year.  This occurs at our school every 2 – 3 years, mainly due to numbers.  I always enjoy these years as I have the opportunity to help the grade twos develop their leadership skills and abilities as they take on the role of peer mediator / peer helper.  This is, of course, on top of their full grade two academic curriculum.  The grade ones also benefit from this arrangement.  One of the many things that I love about Rosser is that, because of our size, our older students (all the way up to grade seven) know our younger students (all the way down to kindergarten).  This has so many benefits they are impossible to list – the main one being, of course, the social and emotional benefits of a good, strong civilization.

I try to keep this blog updated with class happenings, current events, and things to look forward to in the school and classroom.  I will be sending home a letter on Monday with the guidelines for our digital responsibilities, along with a letter about ‘informed consent’ which is now required by the District for access to this blog.  Please complete this and return it as soon as possible.

I am looking forward to a great year working with your children.

Thank you,

Mrs. Shelagh Temple

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Last week we finished our read-aloud of this wonderful book by J.K. Rowling.  Students learned a lot of new vocabulary and seemed to really enjoy meeting the characters in this book.  We enjoyed the many adventures that Harry, Ron, and Hermione experienced.  As a finale to reading the story we used our new video monitor and computer set-up to enjoy the movie.

It was a wonderful treat!

Happy New Year!!

I hope you all had a great holiday and are looking forward to a great New Year.

Just a reminder that our class is going to McGill Library tomorrow.  Hopefully all Public library books will be back tomorrow.  Remember to send your child’s library card in the morning.

Terry Fox Run / Corn Roast

On Friday we will be having our Terry Fox Assembly and Run.  This will be followed by our annual Corn Roast.  Parents are very welcomed to join us for this important event.

I will be telling the class about Terry and his journey across Canada – as well as his battle with cancer.  Students will be decorating a paper ‘running shoe’.  They will be encouraged to dedicate their run to someone they know who currently has cancer; has survived a bout with cancer; or who has lost that battle.
