The Polar Express

We read the book, “The Polar Express”, by Chris Van Allsburg. We then created our little booklets.  The second page is a storyline illustration in a sequence.  The last page is a drawn picture of their favourite scene from the book.  The covers are quite well coloured.

We will be watching the movie on Friday to wrap up our week before the holidays.

The Metamorphosis Process

We read, and created our own booklets of, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”.

Bob, the caterpillar, is now being called “The Very Lazy Caterpillar” as he is still not in his chrysalis form.

The students have come up with some great names for some of the ‘critters’: Lord Catermort , for the chrysalis that fell and died.

Sirius Silk, for the first caterpillar who formed its chrysalis … and Harry Flutter, for the first butterfly to come out today.

All names clearly show how much the students have been enjoying our Harry Potter read aloud times.

Student Teacher

Hello all,

Our student teacher, Ms. Darcy Teal, has re-joined our class.  She will be with us until Friday, December 1st.  As a part of her short practicum she will begin to take over some of the teaching duties (attendance, working with small groups) and work towards teaching specific lessons and eventually a few full days.

We look forward to her time with us in the classroom.

Thank you for your support in her learning journey with your children.

Easter

I hope you all have a fantastic long weekend. Schools will reopen on Tuesday, April 18th.

This week we spent some time talking about Easter – its origin (Christianity) and the ancient Anglo Saxon tradition of Eastre (a spring celebration) which brought us the Easter Bunny.  We read, The Velveteen Rabbit, (my Reading group) and Rechenka’s Eggs, by Patricia Polacco, (the whole class) which looked at the tradition of Russian / Ukranian eggs.

The students decorated their own eggs.  Some challenged themselves by doing the design as well as the colouring.

Learning Colour Schemes

We have spent a few weeks learning about some of the different colour schemes.  The ones we worked with were:

  1. monochromatic (their original colour, plus the three ‘values’ of white, black, and grey)
  2. complementary (their original colour with its opposite, plus the three ‘values’)
  3. triadic (their original colour and the other two in their group – i.e. if they began with a primary colour then they used the three primary colours; if they began with a secondary colour then they used those three colours)
  4. analogous (their original colour and the other secondary and intermediate colours between their colour and the next colour that includes part of their complementary colour).  This last one was a bit tricky to figure out without the crayon colour wheel that we used as a reference.

For this project students began with a large piece of white paper on which they drew a picture of their choice.  They needed to then trace their pencil lines with a fat marker in one of the ‘rainbow’ colours.  This colour choice became their ‘original’ colour for all the other sections.

I then cut these papers into four segments.  Each of these segments was completed in one of the above mentioned colour schemes.  When finished I taped each students’ four pieces together and mounted them onto a black background paper.

These are now hanging in the hallway outside of our classroom door on the two bulletin boards.  Please check them out next time you are in the school.  They look fabulous.
