Tennis, anyone?

We had a great time last week with Marcus, our tennis instructor.  Students had four lessons (one per day) where they learned many skills needed to play tennis.  These lessons were a great deal of fun for the students.  I was amazed at how well the students performed these skills.  I will be sending home an information paper about a tennis camp that Marcus will be running out of the racket club near Burnaby Lake this summer.  This looks like a great opportunity as non-club members are able to participate in these lessons.

The Pumpkin Patch Field Trip

We had a great visit to the Laity Pumpkin Farm today!  Students enjoyed the petting zoo part of the trip.

004

007

They then enjoyed playing on the wooden farm structures, ‘milking’ the cows, and making farm fresh ‘pizza’.

012

We then had a tractor ride and saw some goats and the emus.  After washing our hands (from petting the animals) we enjoyed some juice with our snacks in the tent area.  Once we were finished we wandered through the forest exhibits.  Students really enjoyed checking out the different displays.

Students, and their parent helpers, then explored the corn maze – some of them even did it quickly enough to go through twice and still have time to go and ‘rescue’ some fellow students!

028

Whilst we were awaiting some of our class to get through the maze a few of our boys were playing ‘follow the leader’ with one of the emus!  They had lots of fun doing that.

040

Students then got to choose their very own pumpkin which they took home this afternoon.  I hope you all enjoy carving them with your child.

All in all, it was a great trip – no rain, lots of wonderful parent volunteers, and interesting things to do.

Thank you to all of our parents who came along to help us out today.

Burnaby Heritage Village Field Trip

We had a great trip on Tuesday to Heritage Village.  It was a very Christmas-y day with a light snowfall sporadically throughout the trip.

Students enjoyed the many buildings from the 1920’s.  They learned a great deal about life in Burnaby during this era.

Some highlights included visits to: the blacksmith; the tram (the first ‘Skytrain’ only on ground level – the Interurban); the original Seaforth Schoolhouse (with the schoolmarm and her strict rules about manners and decorum); a log cabin; a Chinese apothecary; the Burnaby Post printing shop; a traditional house; the vintage Carousel; and the farmhouse.

Burnaby Heritage Village Field Trip

On Tuesday, December 10th we will be going to Burnaby Village Museum with Division 6 to take part in the Heritage Christmas programme.

We will leave Rosser at about 10:15 a.m. and return just before 3:00 p.m. for dismissal time.  Students will need to bring their lunches in a plastic bag as we are not taking backpacks or lunch bags.  The lunches need to be clearly labelled with your child’s name as all lunches will be collected and put in a box together in the lunchroom at the Village.

The notice went home earlier this week.  Please complete it and return it by Thursday, December 5th.

The trip is dependent on getting enough parent drivers.  Please let us know as soon as possible if you can help us out as we will need to cancel otherwise.  Students will also need to bring their own car seats on that day.

We look forward to a fun trip and an enjoyable outing.

Laity Pumpkin Patch Trip

004

We left Burnaby on a beautiful, sunny, blue-sky morning.  As we neared the pumpkin farm in Maple Ridge we noticed grey clouds begin to cover up that blue sky.  Shortly after arriving the skies opened up and we were in a downpour!!  This was not something we expected but I was very impressed with the manner in which students (and parents) mustered through and all enjoyed a very fun morning.

We began in the barn area and had fun feeding, and patting, several different farm animals – including: sheep, goats, and miniature ponies.  We also saw a rooster and a hen, along with several partridges.  Students will now know what they are singing about at Christmas time – “a partridge in a pear tree”!!

We left the barn (still in the rain) and enjoyed the outside cut-outs.

We then walked past the vegetable garden and had a tractor ride.  We saw the emus that one of my Reading groups has been learning about.  We moved on to the tent area and enjoyed some juice.

After our break we began our forest walk.  At this point the rain began to subside.  There we enjoyed several of the different themed exhibitions.  Students seemed to enjoy the different areas.  We enjoyed our trip through the corn maze and then it was ‘pumpkin time’!  By now the rain had ceased and the sky was becoming blue once again!

Students each chose their own personal pumpkin to take back to school – and then on to their homes.  It was a very good crop this year!!  I chose one for our class which we will be doing some science-y things with in the next week or so.

031

It was a great experience for the kids.  I hope the parents also enjoyed the morning.  A HUGE THANK YOU to those parents who drove students to help us keep the cost of the field trip down!!  Thank you also to our two student teachers (Ms. Sue and Mrs. S) who drove students and helped to supervise!  Welcome to Rosser!

McGill Library Dates

The following notice was sent home on Friday, September 27, 2013.  Please refer to this page as a reminder of the important information.

Dear Parents,

Please see below the list of days when Div. 5 and 6 will walk to McGill Library to choose books.  On the day of our visit, please send any books to be returned in a plastic bag.  Your child will also need to bring their library card that day and be dressed appropriately for the weather as we will be walking even if it is raining.  If your child forgets their library book, your child will not be able to take out a book that day and we would ask that your family return the overdue book as soon as possible so that your child may select a book on the following visit.

Thank you so much for getting library cards for your children.  We are looking forward to our monthly trips!

Mr. Phelps      Ms. Nazaruk

Here are our library dates, each on a Tuesday:

Oct. 1

Nov. 5

Dec. 3

Jan. 7

Feb. 4

Please note also – you are responsible for any overdue fees if your child’s book ends up being overdue.

Laity Pumpkin Farm Field Trip

Ms. Nazaruk and I have planned a field trip to the pumpkin patch in Maple Ridge for our two classes.  A notice will be coming home in the next day or so.  The trip is planned for Tuesday, October 8th in the morning.  We will be needing parent drivers to transport the students to the farm.  Please look for the notice.  We hope you can help us out.

Mrs. Gojevic is encouraging the use of the on-line payment system for all fees and field trip payments.  This information will be coming home in a notice and will also be an option on the pumpkin farm notice.  Please note that we will still need the completed signed permission form at the bottom of the notice.

Thank you for your on-going support!

McGill Library Visits

Our class will be making monthly trips to McGill Library.  These trips will be on Tuesdays (between Recess and Lunch) when Mr. Phelps is teaching the class.  Ms. Nazaruk and the Kindergarden class will be going with our class.  Today you received a letter from them requesting that you get a Burnaby Public Library card for your child so that they will be able to borrow books from the library.

I will update our ‘Upcoming Events’ page once I have the confirmed dates of our visits.  At this point it is hoped that the first visit will be next Tuesday (September 24th).  This will be confirmed on Monday.  Please ensure that the ‘start-up’ forms – including the one for the Walking Field Trips – are returned by Monday morning.

Thank you.

Fire Hall Trip / Dairy Queen

We had a great trip to the fire hall today!  Students were reminded of what to do in case of a fire in their homes.  Then we learned all about the special equipment that the fire fighters wear to keep themselves safe while they are rescuing people.

All students – plus Ms. Caldwell and myself – had the opportunity to use the fire hose to try to knock over a traffic cone.  It was a lot of fun for all of us!!  Colton and Richard gave the firefighters the card that they had made (and had gotten all the class to sign).

When we left the fire hall we took a short detour to the local Dairy Queen which is practically next door.  Students all enjoyed a cold treat before we returned to our class.  It was really nice for us that Ateeq’s mom was working there today.  She and her co-worker made us our treats!!

It was a very fun end to a busy school year.  I hope you all enjoy a very safe and happy summer vacation!  Students – don’t forget to visit me in my classroom next year!

Cinemazoo Animals!

We had a very enjoyable morning today with our visit from Cinemazoo.  Students had the great opportunity to see many insects, reptiles, and mammals.  Here are some of the highlights:

043

Each of the classes got to have one student wear the ‘snake scarf’ – a boa constrictor.

008

Mrs. Wall decided to add some decoration to her plain, white t-shirt!!

021

A tortoise was just hanging around . . .

031

and then she decided to take a walk!!

There were a variety of snakes, and then the ‘furry’ friends came out.  We saw a very cute rabbit, a very active and friendly ferret, and a sugar glider.

I think this was a great opportunity for the students to get a chance to see so many interesting and exotic animals.
