The Ministry of Education has asked that school districts put learning opportunities in place no later than mid- April. While we will begin planning this week, learning opportunities for your student during these extraordinary times will not be the same as their previous classroom experience. Things will be different.

We also recognize that families already face enormous pressures – from worries about the economy, safety and health to name a few. Knowing that the plans moving forward will not fit every family perfectly, we have considered flexibility a key factor. Please know that everything we are creating is to provide a sense of connection, normalcy, and routine will continue to keep your child engaged in their own education.

Beginning this week, we will be taking a phased approach and the immediate focus will be on connecting with students, gaining valuable insight from our school-based staff, and providing tools for students and families to use at home. To assist with planning, please see the following timeline:
 This week, school staff will reach out to and connect with students and their families.
 Also this week, you will find details on our district website (www.burnabyschools.ca)
about access to our newly created Continuing Learning Website. It contains self-directed activities for students at home. We suggest that students Kindergarten through Grade 7 explore activities by grade level on the Continuing Learning Site.  You will receive additional information with links to access our new learning website next week.

Connections and relationships are at the heart of everything we do in the Burnaby School District. While COVID-19 has dramatically changed how we all reach out to one another, it cannot take away from the importance of relationships and the powerful connection between students and teachers. We thank you in advance for your patience next week, as our school staff reach out to our 25,000 students and their families.

This Valentines Day while we were handing out our Valentine Day cards and our teacher Mrs. Smith handed out compliment mats. A compliment mat stayed on our desks, and our classmates went around and wrote compliments for each other. Before we began the activity we discussed as a class what a compliment is and what it is not.  The main lesson we learned is to always be kind and respect one another.

Grade 6/7 Speeches

Today we got to watch some of the Grade 6 and 7 students give powerful speeches. They all talked about really important matters including global warming, racism, mental health, boredom, the importance of family, and the benefits of travel. Everyone’s speeches were incredible and very insightful.  Every student who presented did an amazing job educating everyone about their topic. I cannot wait to do a speech of my own in Term 3 and again when I am in Grade 6 or 7 in front of a school audience!

“I participate in conversations for a variety of purposes (to connect, help, be friendly, learn  and share”

“I listen and respond to others and can communicate clearly modelling reading strategies I have practiced”

With our little buddies from division 12 we learned how to use Japanese Notan to create haunted houses. We learned to balance dark and light using reflections to create positive and negative spaces.

This week students of Division 4 and 8 harvested 242 potatoes that we have been growing and tending to since March. Students thoroughly enjoyed digging in the dirt and discovering the different insects that decided to call our potato plants home. They were fascinated by the root system and had no problem locating the original  mushed up seed potatoes.
