Learning Opportunities for April 14-17

Hello Again!!!   What a day of learning yesterday was for me today.  Thank you for all your patience as I stumble pushing myself into new areas of technology.  I apologize again for the confusion with the teacher ID in Raz-Kids.
The screenshot on the left is an overview of the learning opportunities for this week.  I am still working on the hyperlinks.  The one for music works, but the others don’t want to. The ones you need for today are listed on the left hand side. For the Socials activity, print off the template and fill it out.

Tuesday, April 14th – Important Parent Info – Reading Program Start

Hello everyone.  You may have noticed the Raz Kids link under bookmarks.  Today we are going to begin our reading program.  Everyone has been given a start place and group of books to read.  With each book there are activities.  Please follow my instructions and complete the activities as I ask you to.  Your work will be recorded and I will looking at it to check your progress.

Go to the right hand side of my blog and click the  under Bookmarks

It will ask you for your teacher ID: Schwarz1(number 1)

Type that in and then click on your name.  Your password is the same as your Microsoft password without the !!!
So not help4!!! it will be help4

Once you have logged in click on the Reading Room Space Ship and it will take you to all the books in your level.  Under each book you see a headset, book and questionmark.  Click first on the headset and listen to the book.  Then click on the book and read it outloud.  When you have finished that click on the question mark and answer the questions it asks you.

THAT IS ALL I WANT YOU TO DO FOR TODAY.  Tomorrow you will go back and reread the story but this time you will have different activities to do.

I will be checking my records to see who has completed this.  I am developing a weekly chart that will list activities for you to do each day of the week.  You will find this on my blog and I will let you know when it is live.  Tomorrow along with continuing with your story you will be making your first post on your blogfolio.  I hope you have practiced logging in to this.  Check back later today to see a slideshow I made of the pictures people sent me of the chic they made.

When you have finished with your reading assignment, please spend 15 minutes on Code.org, and 30 minutes on a math game of your choice.

Happy Long Weekend Everyone!

Here are a couple of stories, a fast math subitizing game and a silly rock song.  I’m so glad Premier Horgan made the Easter Bunny an essential service!!!
I hope you enjoy them.  Next week I will be rolling out our home reading program, we will be making our first blog post and logging onto Microsoft Office as well as other activities.  I wish you all a wonderful long weekend.  Enjoy the sunny weather, look for signs of spring, and of course be a good team member with your family!!!

See you Tuesday
PS:  If you can take a picture of the chick you made, email it to me and I will make a slideshow of them for our class blog

Happy Birthday!!!!

A big shout out to Kiera who celebrated her birthday on Tuesday and one to Elliana who is celebrating today.  We send you virtual Birthday hugs and wish you the best of days.  Remember that on this birthday the sun came out to say hello and the super moon lit up your dreams.

If you would like to wish them happy birthday go the end of this post and say it in a comment.

Thursday, April 9th

Hello everyone.  I am so happy to read your comments about the opportunities for learning I have given you.  Next week I have a new reading program for you to start and quite a few ideas “up my sleeve”.
Please make sure you log on to your blogfolios as I am keeping a list of who has and who hasn’t.  Today, as promised I have an Easter/Spring art project for you so that you can add a little spring cheer to this long holiday weekend.  For many of you it is a time of year when we get together with our families to celebrate important holidays.  I know that it will be very different for you and also for me this year.  I will be sharing with you what my family did, and I am hoping you will be sharing with me, through your blogs, what your family did.
Below I have some links that will tell you how to make the Easter Chic you see at the top left of the page.  You only need computer paper and crayons or pencil crayons.  I don’t recommend felt pens as they will wet the page and make your chick look crumply.

It’s working!!!

Okay everybody.  Make sure you are not trying to log in where my posts are.  Make sure you click on the blogfolio tab at the top of the page and then find your name and click on it.  I have put information on that blogfolio page to help you.

Problems with Blogfolio Logins

It looks like there is a problem with logging onto the blogfolios.  This is something set up at the district.  I will contact them to get the problem fixed.  In the meanwhile, please go to Code and start with the

UNPLUGGED activities.  Some of you “beat me to the punch” yesterday.  It is important you do these lessons in order as I have assigned them to you individually.  Make sure you have read my Wednesday, April 8th blog first about digital citizenship.

Thank you

Mrs. Schwarz

Wednesday – April 8

Happy Wednesday everyone.  The sun is shining and that is always something that triggers my emotions of happiness and gratitude. Just a few of those rays shining on my face will curl my lips into a smile that reaches from ear to ear.
Today I am asking you to go to the links on the right and start your coding lessons.  I have sent you your secret words, or picture to login.  It will take you first to “unplugged activities”.  These activities talk about digital citizenship.  The computer is a very easy place to say and do things that you might not do if you were actually with someone.  We think we are all alone and no one can see.  But the truth is once it goes up on the internet, it is there for many to see.  I have always told my students to ask themselves one question:  “Would I say or do this if my mom or dad were with me?”  If the answer is YES go ahead, but if the answer is NO you need to stop, turn around, and take another plan of action.  I am very confident that the students in Div. 8 will begin creating a very positive “digital footprint” understanding the importance of making good decisions when they are online.
Parents I have a link below with some information about this coding program for you.  We view coding as part of the ADST (Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies) and also the math strand because of the logical and critical thinking required.
Code.Org Parent Information.

After you have finished coding, practice logging on to your blogfolio (you have that password now also) and then leave a comment on this post (not on your blogfolio on Wednesday, April 8) so I know you can log in.  After that  you can choose any of my previous activities or go to my symbaloo.  Don’t forget to be adding to your journal.

Whew, that was a long long post.  Have fun, looking forward to your comments!!!  Tomorrow I will have an Easter/Spring art project to help decorate your house for the long weekend.

Happy Learning

Mrs. Schwarz

Tuesday, April 7

Hello Everyone!!

I hope you have been adding to your “When the World Stayed Home” journal.  I don’t expect you to write pages and pages, just one or two sentences about what you did, or how you learned today, but most importantly how you are feeling.  I have included a little video story about emotions today that you can watch.  Remember that All emotions are important.  We need to be able to recognize how we are feeling so we better understand ourselves.  I also have a shape game and a movement game for you.  You may notice that I have added two more links, one for grade two and one for grade 3.  Today I will be sending each family an email with your passwords for the blogfolio, microsoft office and coding.org.  Please put this information somewhere safe so that it can be found if you need it.  When you have your email with the passwords I would like you to log on to your blogfolio.  Just log on so that I know you can access your account.  (Parents if you wish to comment on any of the posts it is best to log on using your UN and the default password.  Please change the password.  If you log on in your child’s name any comment will have their name and not yours.  I will be adding some parent info at the top of the blogfolio page to help you later this week)  Tomorrow I will be giving you information about Code.Org so please just hold off on that link for today.

Of course there is always my Symbaloo and I hope you are all going to the Dance Mat Typing (you may have to activate Flash if you are having trouble)

Sending you virtual hugs (especially to our parent/teachers, remember you can email me any time, I have put my email under the links so it is easier to access)
