Hate Crimes

2020-2021 has unfortunately seen quite a few racially motivated atrocities. As we studied in the beginning of the year, George Floyd’s death sparked a nerve in people all around the world, of all different backgrounds and cultures. People banded together to say enough is enough: treat us with the respect we deserve. The Black Lives Matter movement has been very strong in articulating against racism, discrimination and bringing attention to systematic racism and white privilege.

Unfortunately, this work has not been enough to educate people into changing their racist, prejudiced mindsets. Instead, attacks against Asian-Canadians and Americans have skyrocketed.

This also saddens me and brings back deja-vu moments of when I was your age. In grade 6, yes, I was your age once (ha!), the September 11th attacks had occurred. I vividly remember going to school on the morning of September 11th and seeing my Muslim friend. We knew that life going forward would come with uncertainty – the exact same uncertainty that people are experiencing again. Attacks against Muslims and Sikhs/Indians in the West drastically increased. As we discussed, Islamophobia was created – the hatred/prejudice of Muslims and/or Islam. Why? Because some people believed that terrorists = brown-skinned people.

Why do I bring this up? Well, for one simple reason: have people learned their lesson from when I was a student? Why is it that innocent people experience hate when they have literally no relation to the ongoing issue? The attacks happened, blame brown-skinned people. The Corona Virus happened, blame Asian-Canadians. They didn’t cause this! They’re as upset as everyone else.

Notable terms that you already know, but definitely want to include in your post:

  1. Discrimination: The unfair treatment of a person, people or group of people because of a characteristic like ethnicity, race, gender, age, etc.
  2. Prejudice: Negative and unreasonable attitudes/feelings (usually based off of stereotypes) about members of a group
  3. Xenophobia: Dislike, fear or hatred against people/things that are seen to be foreign.
  4. Racism: Prejudice, discrimination and/or hatred against a person or group of people based on their racial, cultural, or ethnic background.
  5. Stereotypes: Oversimplified, untrue generalisation about a group of people.

Like many of our posts regarding discrimination, this is an issue that can be very difficult to speak about. Please treat this matter with the respect and care that it deserves. My questions for you are:

  1. Do you think that leaders in government (Mayors, Premiers, and Prime Minister) are doing enough to speak out against this sort of discrimination?
  2. Can you think of other areas in society (schools, organisations, universities/colleges, jobs, etc.) where more should be done to highlight and condemn such behaviour?
  3. What sorts of things can we all do to help decrease and speak up about this issue? How can we make it so that Asian-Canadians feels safe?
  4. What are your thoughts, questions, opinions on these issues?

Please read the below articles to help provide you with some further information, research and stats. Your blog post should be roughly 20-25 sentences (or more :)).

Hello and my name is Kadin and today we are talking about anti Asians and how they are affecting the world so let us get started.

Definitely not because they are speaking about it but not a lot about it and all the information and some of the answers are real and some of them are lies and some people just listen and believe it and the prime minister is doing a lot for the country and that is the reason, he cannot but the mayors are trying to help the country and it is just that to they are trying their best and the city is just giving them hate but the premiers are doing the least work out of all of them not only that they are only showing the good side of them because one time I want to go to the supermarket and met a premier and that are nice but they have a lot of backlash after they do something very bad and get a lot of hate like if I did something bad it would be the least threatening to me but if someone famous did it would be so bad that some people take their own life if it gets the scary.

Yes of course it should be because not all people do not know that they are making fun of Asians, or they do not really care about but some people think they can change and they do and it is just that some people do not get it and yes I know that feeling because I used to be like that but I changed because I was only 4 at the time not only that my parents told me that I should not and get me wisdom and now I’m just a normal kid just trying to grad and my parents inspired me to change but to act and I follow by Those rules but only sometimes I have to change were I acted because if I don’t I will fail and just go all out on that person like I did in kindergarten.

Well, we can start to decrease it by having a club or a team to talk about this stuff but not only that I think we should have a big meeting about it and just you know talk about how distinct cultures are doing like if they are getting backlash and bullied or something big like someone died (not saying there will be)

They should do more to help any culture that really need help because it should not be just the people that and of course I think I can help, and many people can help to not just only people who care about and of the cultures.

I think for them are enough because they are in their position to protect other’s people feelings. And they are destinated to change these discriminations for Asians. But I also think that they are not enough to change these discriminations because they only do it in speaking and not in actions.

Yes, more areas of society should have to highlight and express their disapproval because not only societies or households are suffering and taking all the blame from other there are a lot of people that really want to be free. This is also explaining to other people if we highlight other societies more people or Asians would appreciate their life and not taking all the blame that they didn’t do. This is also helping them live at their own lives and not someone control you this is helping them not to be afraid and not to be disappointment which this will lead to more Asians.

We can help them protest because they deserve their peaceful life. We can also help them by let them go through what they want to go through with like going to superstore anywhere where they want to go. Or we can help them explain what happened to them and why it started there. There are a lot of reasons where you can help them it’s just hard to do it. But if we gathered and help them do things that they want to be.

My Thought about these issues is they shouldn’t treat them unequal as the un-Asians because they deserve to be treated equally.

My opinion about these is They shouldn’t hide and go out there and try to explain what they didn’t did. Like spreading the covid 19 but they didn’t do so why not defend their self instead hiding and letting themselves blame for what happened.

My question is why they let them self to be treated that way and let other people bullied you.

If I add some of my opinions, I think these issues wouldn’t be such a problem and because almost all Chinese people or Asian’s people don’t believe anymore because they are not filled of trust. All people or the people who got the highest Honour like president. They all got people trust and I think that’s why almost Asian people lost their energy because we don’t trust them as much what other people trust you.

There are a lot of questions I want to ask and that is why people think love, friendship, family, and everything else matter when we don’t trust them. Because I think friendship is matter if you don’t trust one another. Same for the family do you think us children, Grandma’s or anyone in your family would let you go out if they don’t trust you. And I know that not everything is about trust it’s about something else but that doesn’t mean that you would be friends with someone when you don’t trust them.

A quick warning: JESSICA SONG WILL NOT BE NICE IN THE FOLLOWING ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS.
    1. A big fat juicy NO! First of all aren’t they the one in charge of the community/ country. The last time I checked that was the case. Your job is to make sure very one in your community is safe and well run. Well that isn’t the case right now, is it. If your brain isn’t big enough to understand the situation then I will be more than happy to explain the situation to you clearly word by word if that is what you need. Isn’t that great. Having a sixth grade explaining to a situation that sits right in front of you face just great? If that can knock some sense into you than i won’t worry about wasting my time. Second of all they need a person from a high level to speak out and to the public.
    2. I think we can put up more signs or advertisements. We can have students learn more about the problem at school. We can have people who experienced discrimination to come to schools and maybe have a few speeches about their experience. We can have a few protests. The biggest issue is they think we won’t stand up for our rights, but we will. We have to show them we are not the gum on the bottom of their shoes. We have to be strong. Stand up for not only our selves but all the ours.
    3. We can have speeches, protests, and some gatherings. We have to show them we will stand up to them. We all have a part in our country. I love both china and canada. My two countries are home the place i grew up in.
    4. Well i have had few experiences with these problems. An old man came up to me In the grocery store and said me and the ones that look like me brought COVID to Canada and this is my problem. One man came up to me and called me a slur. Ive had it i demand for change. I want all the rights I deserve!!! 😡

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog post. My name is Alan and today I will be talking and giving my opinion about the things going around the world whether they’re about racism, discrimination, or even stereotypes, so let’s get into it. The first sight of major drama was when the Corona virus all started. It started off small but then it spread rapidly, and people were fearing of it. And then people started blaming the country where it started, then they started going after people that look the same way, then after the whole eastern Asian population. And started hating and even killing them. And the same thing happened for a lot of countries. So this is basically what my blog is about so onto some other things. I think that the government and some other leaders and etc., should speak out about the discrimination and racism that’s been happening around the world and put a stop to it. And I know that some have tried to do it, but others are actually encouraging the racism, and sometimes even starting it. So I think the people who are getting listened to should be speaking out more about hatred against other backgrounds because without support for the people getting beat on, discrimination will be a big thing that people are getting, and sooner or later people might be committing suicided or getting killed and the world will just be a worse place in general. And even if you don’t agree then you should think about the fact that you should treat others the way you want to be treated and should stand up for these people so they would enjoy life more and who knows maybe the world will be a way better place to be in and enjoy your 1 and only life in it. And I don’t think that only the people who will be heard should be speaking out about this. But I think that schools, small fundraisers, and more should also be grouping up and talking and protesting about racism, discrimination, etc. And together all as a big group could get up and do anything if we just put are minds to it. And not just only that but, if the leaders (the people who will get listened more) don’t agree we can somehow change that. But I’m not saying that people shouldn’t have opinions, I’m just saying to move them towards the way of not being racist, and to not discriminate others. Then when that’s all done we could go up to someone who’s discriminating or being racist to someone and say “hey that’s not cool” and if that’s not enough we got the leaders on our side by nudging them to the right direction and maybe they could go against the group of people who are doing bad things. And with all of this information I am going to be telling you, you, you and you on what to do to be able to help all cultures, religions, etc. feel safe of who they are and make them feel proud about that. So for starters (if maybe you don’t want to do something big yet) you can maybe make a card or tell someone or if you want to go a little bigger you could mail something to the top people, or form a small group and go up to a person and say to them a convincing speech, and if you want to go even further beyond space (litterly) you can hold up something because your on T.V, or you can maybe start a protest with your friends then sooner or later it will expand to the point where maybe you just made people feel safe for who they are. My thoughts, opinions, issues on all this discrimination/racism affecting the world is that I just don’t understand why people discriminate others for who they are. And its not like they got to choose between who they wanted to be. And all I want for the people doing those sorts of things is to put themselves in the other persons shoes. And to be completely honest with you I don’t understand at all why people discriminate other people for a reason that the other person didn’t even get to pick. Now that just blows my mind! Anyays this is the end of my blog hopfully you enjoyed it and have a merry thanksgiving. By: Alan.

Hello everyone it’s A kid here and people ask me for daily blog posts so here we go on racism and stuff today since my teacher wanted me to do this we do it here is how it started.

On March 2020 the Coronavirus choochoo train wanted to build a bridge between Prince Rupert British Colombia and Pyongyang, North Korea, the beautiful sculpture capital of the world, or should I say the Poverty and Communist capital of the wor- (this video has been demonetized due to violation of school relationship.) However the coronavirus couldn’t do it himself since even if he duplicates it so they Contracted the Department of transportation in BC and this is what went down.

“Can I build this bridge here”
    “No”
    “Please”
    “No”
    “Please”
    “No”
    “Please”
    “No”
“Well screw it, I’ll do it anyway”
    “…Wait wha-”

So, they built a bridge, and all the whites were happy, why? Well so they have Asians to well make fun of. This is Racism they contracted VIA Rail and marched through planes and stole all of their F40PH-2D’s but that wasn’t enough they then marched to CSX and asked if they can borrow their AC4400CW’s. After they said no for the eighteenth time, they stole them anyway
CSX: OH COME ON I SAID NO GIVE IT BACK YOU DIRTY… GLASSES
and ya that is how anti-asian hate was born. Now how was black hate born. Well you see in the 1990s Santa fe was looking for locomotives for all of their freight trains outside of the express from Gary Indiana to Detroit Illinois, so the CEO at the time Tamara Carr went to GE and saw their C40-8W and saw how ugly and disgusting they were they then took it and threw it at the CEO face Gordon Liu. They then went to EMD and borrowed their SD70MAC, and Tamara Carr loved it while all of her workers Hated it. She bought it and they made her merge with Apollo P Richardson and yeah, the new CEO DEputy Bark wanted it to be racist so he made it so every white kid who gets on the choo choo train can beat any nonwhite kid up. You may ask what the SD70MAC stands for well the S stands for Smooth D stands for Doki Doki Panic because why the heck not, 70 stands for the amount of Sit-ups you have to do before you can get in the Cab and the MAC stands for they are powered by MacBook’s. They have D… 40LF traction motors and a top speed of –99mph. They use weigh which contains Tissues and Explosives, as well as a centimeter of Apollos blonde hair. Anyway, they ran well and they still run, I just Wanna say the new owner Marko luz has taken such good care of them, they went from very dirty and disgusting too beautiful and new. The end.

Ok now time to answer the questions well this really depends on who the mayor, President is, and it does get political several Politicians did stand opposition on the anti-Asian hate crime bill and others got mad over Derek Chauvin’s verdict. Regardless even if the Politicians do a lot, they can’t solve everything that happens. This would also lead to higher hatred because people may think the politicians aren’t doing anything. Politicians are making attempt it’s just sometimes the news media portrays these way too much. But then again, we never know what will happen regardless and even then, racism would still be a problem, sure killings of black or Asian may stop but probably not hating on a black directly. One thing if our leader speaks out against racism only the people who support him or her likely will suport it and people who don’t won’t but that is just my opinion which is something that I well don’t have. (wait) Ok now on to something that I probably know more of Derek Chauvin so what happened? He killed George Floyd and got arrested he later was found Guilty for well 3 murder charges, is he receiving too much backlash? Well, he killed George Floyd the biggest question however was it intentional? Ok let’s get the thing out of the way this should not have been done in the first place, he clearly did it to make him suffer and I personally believe he isn’t receiving too much backlash. He did the crime and now he must do the time. Since he did kill George Floyd when he clearly shouldn’t have as a police officer you are supposed to just do the arrest unless they are well not being well, however with these in mind if it was a white would he have done the same. Probably not because this generally feels racial biased.

Now would nonwhite communities help from this verdict, no it’s a verdict! sure it does prevent the black community from protesting and getting angrier. However, we need to know that there are several people who have had this happen and the cops did not get charged. Regardless this is something that may make nonwhite communities well really happy, however this is not enough if we want it to officially end. We need reforms to our justice system, and we need it fast. They could benefit from the verdict which they may have however they are also likely to be targeted more by white people who well think white people are superior, did I forget to mention some republicans want to bring back slavery, hm makes me question the world. In conclusion I think nonwhite’s are happy however I don’t think it will help them though because it’s just a court case and it can’t impact a lot of things

Recently, there has been a lot of talk about racist crimes. People have been doing racist things towards Asians because the coronavirus came from Asia. There have been a lot of opinions floating around, and I will now state mine.

First of all, do I think this is a real issue, or just a story from the media? I think this is a real, racist problem that exists in our society. I have heard stories from peers that have experienced this problem, so I do believe it is a real issue that needs to be stopped.

So, now that we know this problem exists, how do we stop it? Well, I don’t think there is a good solution for the entire issue. For the assault part of the issue, yes, I think the cops should crack down on any type of assault or property damage. But, for the speech part of the issue, I am not sure. If we crack down on speech, we could also be violating peoples’ free speech rights. Even if that wasn’t an issue and hate speech was banned, what would hate speech even mean? What people consider hate speech is subjective, and when we can’t draw lines, it will make it messy to enforce the laws. So do I think that governments can do anything to enforce these rules? Yes, we can have police cracking down on people who commit hate crimes. But, I don’t think that we can have an easy solution for hate speech, because hate speech is technically protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

I think that schools can help stop the issue though, bullying for any reason can lead to punishment. If schools crack down on bullying of all forms, it can help stop the issue of hate. In a workplace people could also be punished for harassing people, as such behavior should not be accepted in a workplace.

Personally, I think this is a disgusting behavior, as the people being targeted aren’t Asians, they are Asian-Canadians. People should be able to walk around their communities and feel safe, Canada is supposed to be a safe country for all people who enter.

To sum it up, I think that this isn’t just a story, it’s a real world issue. I think the hate crimes can be stopped by having police officers serve justice, but hate speech is more difficult to control. In workplaces this behavior should not be tolerated as it is very toxic. I think that Canada should be a safe country for all people who come. I hope we can solve these issues so we can have that Canada.

Recently, there has been a huge spike in Asian Hate crimes due to the coronavirus. With more and more covid cases, people start spreading more and more racist stereotypes about Asians. Sure, the virus DID start in China, but is that really any reason to spread so much hate about the people who were born there?

The virus has caused so much destruction to the world causing schools to shut down, entire companies to go out of business, and now this? People look at people of the Asian race as walking viruses.

Personally, I don’t think that the government leader such as Justin Trudeau and Joe Biden, supposedly the best president on earth, are doing anything. The only way we can change this is by protesting to the government in a peaceful way until we get what we want.

Schools are doing a bit to stop the spread of Xenophobia by teaching students things about other countries. A great example of this in our very own school is Ms. Zimmerschied. Every class she teaches us about something foreign and new so that we can get a better understanding of what the real world is like.

There are a variety of things that we can do to help stop this. The first thing that we can do is spread the word to others. For example, you can tell your parents about it and maybe they can listen up for a few seconds. Something that the government can do is put up posters informing people of what is happening. Also, it shouldn’t be just Asians protesting for their rights, white people can do the same too. Basically, all I’m saying is that we should give this Asian hate thing a bit more attention, because at the moment, the Black Lives Matter movement is occupying all of the space. Perhaps we can find a balance between them.

Ah yes, and now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for, my opinions on this. Personally, the fact that this is actually happening kind of makes me question society a bit. The fact that people are actually dumb enough to (a) come up with something so prejudiced and cause so much discrimination and (b) for people to actually believe it. So anyways, the fact that people are bringing things up like this is great, it brings us closer and closer to a near-perfect world, but I also find it a bit interesting how the BLM movement is hogging all of the attention while movements like these go almost unnoticed. Some people don’t realise that racism isn’t just towards black people.

So in conclusion, I think that what the movement is doing is great, but they just aren’t getting enough attention. So I think that people should just take their minds off of BLM for a bit and try something new.

  8. tiya1 says:

    Hey guys!
I would say recently but, this has been happening for a long time. Asian hate. There has always been racism, discriminating, sexism, people being prejudice (pretty juice), and just negative thoughts and hate about indigineous, muslim, indian, black, lasian, and so many more groups of people, because of their colour, culture, etc. But since the coronavirus has started also known as Covid 19 some people have filled their minds with the mindset that since the virus started in China “all Chinese people are basically a walking virus.” Which is completely bogus. I would say, “this is my opinion,” but I know for a fact that people claiming this statement is not okay! Just because someone’s ethnic background is Chinese doesn’t mean that they have covid. It doesn’t mean being around them isn’t safe. It doesn’t mean you can single a group of people out and be prejudiced. Some people are even acting like this toward people who aren’t Chinese but might resemble some physical features that Chinese people might have. 643 incidents were reported from March 2020 to December 2020. That’s 10 months. Today is May 9th, 2021. Imagine how many people have verbally and physically abused a group of people because of a virus. Don’t get me wrong this virus is horrible. This virus here, we can’t do anything about it and we can’t go spitting and hitting people who might be Chinese, calling it a Chinese virus because it was started in china.
Look at something. Any possession that you have. Most of the time it states, “Made in China.” Are you going to throw away that thing? Heck, maybe your house was even made by a Chinese woman. Are you going to start living on the streets? Because it was made in China or made by someone Chinese. According to some people, it carries the coronavirus, right? I saw something once on Instagram. There were two eggs. One was brown and one was white. Both of them were the same on the inside. They had the same white weird liquid and yellow yolk. So what if the coronavirus was started in the country where you are from. People would start treating you differently. But you wouldn’t know why because isn’t everyone the same on the inside.
In my opinion, it doesn’t matter what your age is. Where you live. Where you’re from. Everyone needs to know about this topic. Everyone needs to be informed about this topic. Our class was lucky enough to be taught about this(thank you Ms. Panesar) but most people don’t even know about this enough to be teaching it to other people. And I think the government needs to also do more about this. They need to speak more about this. Pak-ei Wong was saying he didn’t feel safe enough to look people in the eye. He stated,” I could be walking down the street, minding my own business and could be assaulted. That’s a genuine fear.” This message is directed toward the government: Be leaders and make people feel safe. Because the worst thing is to feel like you could be assaulted in your own home.
I feel like to make this situation better in the end, people just need to realize they need to stop. The government can enforce laws, get people arrested (as they should). But it’s the person’s choice. Either to realize that this isn’t right or to get in trouble for it and continue to be racist and prejudice. People can tell people what to do. But it’s that person’s choice to listen or not. Victims that have been verbally and physically abused need to learn to speak up and tell their stories. Not so people can pity them but to spread awareness. I wish people didn’t even have to come to a point of having to learn self-defense and to be scared to make eye contact because you feel like you’re going to get attacked. People feel scared to leave their homes. But it has to come to that point. And it needs to stop.

  9. sho1 says:

    1. Of course, the government is not doing enough, government must have to speak out against this sort of discrimination more, or else we will all die by the wrong reason of Asian hate racism! We need more help, also government is involved to this, because government’s job is to make equal humanity! But look at this terrible Asian hate racism world, I can’t believe this government is doing enough if I see this Asian hate racism. Government can speak more they are not doing best. government must speak until they passed their limit. Racism isn’t stopping, government must help Anti-Racism group. There is no time to explain, government must speak out against this sort of discrimination! If I was government, I will only help Anti-racism even I passed my limit no matter what! Many Asian people are getting hurt and dying because of Asian hate racism, I can agree government is doing enough if no one is getting hurt and dying because of racism. Also I can agree government is doing enough, if racism is not increasing, not like the Asian hate racism is increasing more than seven hundred percent than last year, what the heck, the Asian hate racism is not decreasing, nether it is increasing, how the f**k can you call this government is doing enough!?
    2. I think all society have to be done to highlight and condemn such behaviour, but in this case I think most important society that have to be highlighted and condemned with behaviour is a place that children goes, because when people grows up they can not change easily, because they have something to believe for many years so they doesn’t want to change that easily, but children doesn’t know anything about this world that much, so they have a pot to fill about the how unfairness this world are. Children is the future of this world so I think society that have to be highlighted and condemned is a place that children goes. Also I want to say thanks to this school, because they teach me about racism. There is many kind of schools, but I am glad to be in this school.
    3. There is many way we can help decrease and speak up about this issue to make Asian-Canadians and normal Asian people feels safe, but I think the best way to decrease and speak up about this issue is riot that people doesn’t get hurt or die and speak up loud like lion, because if we didn’t do anything and ignore what happened, it won’t stop for ever and ever. There is no rule that you are not allowed to disagree on things in this country. We are free to speak in this country, do not miss your chance of speaking. If we speak maybe more than one million people will get saved. Also I can’t believe that in other countries sometime if you speak to government you get shot by police, we are lucky that we can live in the country that are free to speak.
    4. My thoughts of this issue is why those people want to feel that they are strong by bullying the people that doesn’t fight back, because bullying people that doesn’t fight back to feel they are strong, actually I don’t get it, how the heck can you feel I am by bullying people that are weak? Bullying weak person means the person that bully’s are losers, givers and scared, they now that they are losers, givers and scared, so they bully some one who are. I am totally confused about this. The question of this issue is can I punch the people that are Asian hate racism, never mind, back to my question, my question is do you actually feel strong if you bully weak person to Asian hate racism, because I don’t understand why do they bully only weak person. I got bullied once, but I never felt I want to bully other weak person. My next question of this issue is do you bully non-Asian country people if they make a new virus like COVID-19 to Asian hate racism people? My opinion of this issue is people who calls Asian people a moving virus is idiot and peace of crap.

  10. damian4 says:

    1. I don’t think the government is doin enough because like everyday Asians get attacked. It just feels unsafe especially being Asian myself most of the elderly are getting punched in the face of beaten really badly due to discrimination. And when lots of your classmates are Asian it’s like someone is going to get attacked besides we are not adults yet.
    2. Many Asian schools, stores , and etc are vandalized just because they are Asian. Besides getting mad at a race or beating Asians is just stupid because first of all it’s racist and second of all it’s disgusting. Just because a person is Asian doesn’t mean they are Chinese they could be Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, and etc.
    3. We can make ads or newspapers or protests which is really unnecessary unless it’s like the BLM protests or make new laws to make Asians feel like they aren’t in jeopardy. I feel like these aren’t even enough to keep Asian- Canadians safe besides we rarely see such things happen so we might be lucky.
    4. I think this needs to be stopped this instant it’s just stupid and we have a home with very cruel people on this planet that treats others differently just because of their looks.
Overall this is making anxious because I’m Asian and majority of our class is too which I can understand what they feel like.

I think that only some leaders in government are speaking up about this and are brave enough to announce that racism does exist in Canada. This is not new or news for anyone who have had remarks made about the colour of their skin, who have been denied a job because they did not have “Canadian experience” or people who are afraid to use buses or trains in fear that they would be attacked with hatred and dirty remarks for being of Asian descent, accused of bringing the COVID virus to Canada. Jagmeet Singh, said “We need to tackle the injustice in the criminal justice system — the over-policing of black bodies and black lives” I I agree that we do, and we each need to ask ask ourselves ad=nd one another but “what are you going to do to make that happen?”. Our Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, said “We need to be better in Canada.

More and more people in authority, people with influence need to stand up, be the voice of people who live in fear and cannot speak up. Even though we’ve made strides forward in the fight against racism and discrimination, racism still exists in Canada,”

Another area where I believe that more can be done to highlight and condemn such behavior is in schools specifically elementary schools. While we have learned about current events such as the George Floyd case, we have not studied the history behind racism and discrimination. In my opinion we need to better understand the reasons why racism and discrimination exists. In order to find ways to help break the cycle we need to educate and empower everyone to speak up against discrimination. Recently, in Canada specifically on May 8th, 2021, CTV news reported “data shows Vancouver had highest number of anti-Asian hate crimes in North America in 2020.” This data further supports that if we don’t find a way to educate everyone, discrimination appears out of the cracks in our society. One way to help to educate is to start with courses and curriculums in elementary school to learn about the history and how to act appropriately and know the difference between right and wrong including how to respect each other. When a situation like COVID-19 is presented, people easily form bad impressions and chose to act inappropriate ways.

Somethings that we can do to decrease and speak up about racism and discrimination is to educate parents and families about how to speak around their children. Children learn from their family and parents based on they act, speak and interact with one another. Therefore, if families focus on how and what they say to their children and to be accepting and respecting of each other we can have a society of educated, respectful and diverse people, and thoughts.

I strongly believe that we need to be better educated and informed about racism and discrimination. Each person has an essential part to play towards making our community, our schools, workplaces, and society racism free. Society needs to change for the better.

  12. april7 says:

I’m going to be brutally honest; I feel like they could do a LOT more. (Honestly, I’m not very educated on this, so I apologize if I get some of this wrong) I mean yeah sure, things these days are definitely a lot better compared to past discrimination and hate towards Asian communities, but I really think that this topic is not talked about enough, and that there isn’t enough attention brought to this. As authority figures, they are the ones who have the power to actually put a stop to this, yet they are choosing not to talk about all the Asian hate that’s been going around. They are meant to watch over this country, and make sure that everything runs smoothly, but they still don’t acknowledge all of this injustice and discrimination. Genuinely, I really hope that sooner or later, they’ll bring attention to this problem, and recognize that this needs to be resolved. In my opinion, I feel like they should talk about this more in schools, and universities/colleges because I think that it’s easier to teach younger people about issues due to the fact that a lot of them are more open-minded cause they’ve been exposed to these things growing up, unlike elderly or older people. For example, more kids are lgbtq+ friendly because we are starting to normalize people having different genders and sexualities. I find that with a lot of older citizens, it’s harder for them to change their minds because these opinions, and topics weren’t talked about a lot when they were growing up, and they weren’t really normalized as much. So, they aren’t used to all of this change, and decide to stick with their outdated beliefs. Personally, I’m open to learning about all of this, while my parents choose to stick with old stereotypes because it’s when they grew up with. So, to sum it all up, all this prejudice and discrimination could be talked about more in schools, (elementary, middle, and high school) and colleges/universities.

In order to decrease all the xenophobia and racism, I think what we can do is, one; stand up for those who are victims of discrimination and hate, two; spread the word using the internet, and three; just support East-Asian Canadians. Often, I feel like a lot of people who have to deal with this racism must face it on their own. So, by standing up and helping them, it can make a big difference, as a lot of times, it’s easier to pick on people who are alone, so by being there for someone, and helping them fight their battles, you are essentially protecting them in a way. My reasoning for using the internet is for safety reasons. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but we’re still in the middle of a pandemic, so it’s not safe to go and protest in person. (Just to be clear, I’m not saying I’m against this form of protest) I find that a lot of times it’s easier to spread the word by using social media, since almost everyone has access to the internet, and that way, the word can be spread to different countries and regions as well. The last one I feel like speaks for itself so there’s not much to say for that one. Moving onto the final question, from my point of view, I definitely feel enraged and upset by this. As a person with a Chinese origin, all of this hate and discrimination due to mainly stereotypes and covid makes me a little hesitant to go to public places other than school. Especially because BC has the most reports of East-Asian hate, and I’m already a very anxious and tense person, so with all this racism going around, it kind of makes my nervousness and anxiety jump up a lot. Luckily though, I haven’t had any encounters with discrimination, and I don’t know any racial slurs (other than the n word and one for Japanese people) so even if someone did insult me, I would have no idea. Honestly, I don’t know how I’ve been able to avoid this type of hate. Maybe it’s because I don’t really go to public places anymore, maybe it’s because I look more like I’m from other areas of Eastern Asia, but whatever the case is, I feel extremely fortunate that I haven’t had to deal with this issue. I sincerely hope that things will get better, not just for Eastern Asian Canadians/Americans, but also for all the other groups who are also fighting similar battles.

  13. aumi1 says:

While some leaders in government are doing their job well and trying to prevent further discrimination towards Asians, Donald Trump, ex-president of the USA, used to call Covid-19 the “Chinese virus.” Yes, Covid-19 did originate in China, but is it not very rude to call Covid-19 the Chinese virus just because of that? It’s like when the September 11th attacks happened. A common stereotype popped up during this time. Because of a Muslim terrorist, apparently every single Muslim is a terrorist. This is not true at all. Let’s say a virus popped up in Canada, and because of that, people are extremely rude to every single Canadian and are calling this virus the Canadian virus. Many people would say this is extremely rude, and it is. It is discrimination towards Canadians, especially if we were living in someplace not in Canada. They’d say we spread this virus to their land, and to “go back to where you came from.” This is happening to an astounding amount of Asians every single day. Marnie Manalo, a Filipino-Canadian, said in an interview, “I didn’t want to leave the house.” No doubt, Manalo said this due to the hate that she faces regularly, and at such a severity that it scares her to step foot outside of her own home. She even double checks that she locks her door each day. This is the state that Asian-Canadians are living in today.

I feel like schools everywhere should be learning about the discrimination Asian-Canadians face on a regular basis, like with BLM, to learn about the prejudiced view people see Asians through often. Asian-Canadians often face discrimination when trying to apply for a job, as well. If, out of two applicants, with the same qualifications apply for the same position, it is often noted that the applicant with the Anglicized name often has a better chance of getting a call for the interview, even if they might not be as qualified as the applicant with an ethnic sounding name. To avoid discrimination, many people with ethnic sounding names end up changing their names to a commonly accepted English sounding name.

To decrease discrimination against Asian-Canadians, we can do quite a few things. These include doing protests to inform people of the injustice Asian-Canadians face daily due to Covid-19, avoid stereotyping people, and instead try and understand their culture and traditions so that we can all co-exist peacefully. We can be more supportive towards Asian-Canadians during this time by being kind and accepting their cultural differences. We can also stand up for everyone’s basic human rights, and lend our voice when we see others being discriminated or mistreated.

My thoughts on this issue are the following: I think that people, especially with the ongoing pandemic, are feeling more stressed than ever. We must stay 6 feet apart, wear masks, and basically socially isolate yourself from others. People want people to blame, to shove this whole disaster onto, and who else would be better to blame than Asian-Canadians? So, Asian-Canadians are receiving lots of discrimination. I am happy that people are starting to recognize the prejudiced view that Asian-Canadians are often viewed through, and are trying to stop the injustice they face on a regular basis. Asian-Canadians aren’t to be blamed for this pandemic. They are equally as innocent as us, if not more.

  14. maya33 says:

To start things off, have I really remembered if they have talked about discrimination. As a person who isn’t really good at listening. I’m not that good at listening to the news. Sometimes I do remember some stuff that they say like, “this needs to stop.” or something along the lines like that. Once again It can be hard for me to focus sometimes but I don’t really remember what they were talking about. Or atleast who or what race. I kind of hope that it’s just me, because if they haven’t really gotten that much of people’s attention, In my opinion, I think they need to keep pushing it. Yes, yes. I understand the meaning of “stop means stop.” but there are so many people around the world who just have to be idiots. And heck, I don’t remember things like regular people but I can’t think of someone who has tried to stop things like prejudice based. While doing this I did at least make sure if my parents also don’t remember anything about government leaders helping stop or talk about asian hate. Which my parents replied to with no. So it’s either that they haven’t been talking about it. Or they haven’t been nailing down there reasons why doing this is unfair. So to put it short. Yes. I do think that they should talk more about things based off of these topics that need to be known as much as possible. And for the second question. Can I think of things such as organizations or schools that need to learn more about this. I’m going to say this sadly just for a rant. The KKK. Ok. FIRST, you don’t even spell CLAN right. I guess it makes it edgy and whatever but in my sight it looks dumb. Anyways. The KKK. Ok, so it says here that the people that the KKK target are Jews, African Americans, Catholics, atheists, immigrants, the LGBTQ+ and Muslims. This is so stupid too. Why are you bullying people for being religious and not religious. Since they aren’t on an atheists or Catholics side, I’m guessing that they’re Christian. I don’t care if you’re religious or not. AND I’M FREAKING CHRISTIAN. If you’re saying that you’re way is the holy way and that this is what God has intended. Why be so rude and destructive if you’re so holy? Isn’t being holy being pure and all? None of us are really pure. I’ll tell you that. So if you believe in God, I think you’re making it worse for yourself. And why would God want people who he’s made to help be so destructive or just so dumb in such a sad way. AND WHY DO I KNOW MORE THAN GROWN ADULTS WHO SHOULD KNOW BETTER THAN ME FROM HOW “SMART” THEY ARE AND HOW KIDS DON’T KNOW ANYTHING. TELL ME THAT >:(. Ok, next question. How can we make Asian-Canadians feel safe? Well, since I’m an Asian-Canadian, I do know how this kinda feels or how this kinda scares me. Before, I didn’t really think much of it because I thought that people thought that I was Mexican because I was an idiot because I heard one kid ask if I was Mexican in my swimming classes before. But now when I found the hashtag StopAsianHate. I found out that it was a thing and I was going to support it no matter what. I

  15. sandra8 says:

As we may all know, Asian are now facing discrimination due to the Covid-19 situation, and not only specifically to the Chinese, Koreans and Japanese have also faced discrimination because of how people assume them as Chinese because of their appearance and features.

I certainly do not believe leaders in government are doing enough to stop the Asian hate or other sorts of discrimination. In my opinion, things should be said clear, and governments should speak up to let the citizens know that this is NOT ok, and that racism is not what we want in this country. So far, I feel like governments are kind of ignoring the issue (more like they feel like this issue isn’t severe enough to be taken into consideration). For example, Covid-19, because things weren’t taken into action immediately (we were encouraged that it was no big deal), things continued to get out of control, to the point where cases are increasing by hundreds. Same goes for Asian hate, if the issue is not fixed, it will only increase, and the number of victims will prove my point. Since last year, it was confirmed that victims increased by 717%, from 12 cases to 142 cases and this is due to racism and lack of responsibilities of the governments. In some cases, I even feel like some governments want the hate between the Asians. Maybe not in some certain countries but a few, I know, will want China to take all the blame when the pandemic ends, and this is all because of the economic fight between countries.

I think discrimination and issues like this, should be more aware and highlighted in schools because we are the future which is why we should pay more attention to these issues and to be more open to the problems in our own communities so we could be someone that is not racist, but openminded in the future. By doing so, we could make our world a better place and achieve higher goals. It will also affect and change how our personality and reactions towards these issues when we grow up which is essential into being a righteous person in the future. In the other words, when kids are able to have a good educated mindset of the all the human rights and respect for different cultures, when they grow up, they would be someone that understands the importance of diversity, multi-culturalism, and anti-racism so, issues like this wouldn’t occur in the future generation. Of course, not only kids, adults should also be more aware of these kinds of issues in order to achieve peace among the society and make everyone have the access to safety in where they live.

As a community, we could do so many gestures and actions to decrease the amount of hate in the society. The best and most successful way, in my opinion, is to let the government deal with the issue since we tend to listen to those who hold the power of a political position. By doing so, we need to bring up the awareness of the victims that faced racism throughout the pandemic period to prevent furthermore attacks on Asians. In order to do so, we could spread out the words of what is now happening to many few that live here in Canada and how this had affected so many Asians daily lives with fear of going outside just to maybe take a walk or to go to the sky train because of the attack (either verbally or physically) they will get from people that have hatred towards the Chinese. We could fight against the unfairness, blame, and hate that Asians are now having to take on for something they haven’t made nor contributed. Safety is a huge topic many of us ask for in our lives and now, a group of people do not feel safe in this country which is why by doing these kinds of actions will help regain the feeling of safety for those who lack it.

As part Asian, our family are really close to the big events and news that occur in the Chinese society and as far as I know, China has been controlling the pandemic really well, so I really don’t understand how this “Chinese people have viruses” sort of thing is still being discussed because this isn’t the China’s virus, it’s a whole world pandemic that all of us are facing right now. Yes, I get the fact that the virus was first found in Wuhan, but imagine if it first started in another country. Like Canada for example, would we still be taking on so much hate? Plus, it’s not like all viruses in the past came from China. It came from variety of countries including Canada and many others. I get that some of us, among the community, have lost family members, and loved ones due to the Covid-19 (or just the fact of losing freedom and everything) but this doesn’t give any of us the right to use Asian people as our scapegoats. Asians are still humans and they feel the same loss like everyone else. They shouldn’t be treated with such hate when it’s not their fault that all of this is happening. I don’t want to have to worry what my family or relatives may have to face and as a 13-year-old kid, I shouldn’t be worrying about this nor many other Asians. Right now, the hate that people use towards the Asians are now making them feel unsafe and nobody should be scared to live in their homes. Again, nobody wanted this pandemic to happen, so why create hate among different cultures? Like said in the article, Asians aren’t the virus, hate is.

  16. mary5 says:

Ridiculous. Discrimination and Racism have risen again, but this time to Asian-Canadians. Anti-Asian Attacks have increased by 717 percent over the past year, which is from 12 to 142 cases, the Vancouver Police Department confirmed. While in Toronto, the results of two surveys had more than 1,000 self-reported cases of Asian-Canadian racism. Councils are calling for action towards this kind of behaviour, but are our leaders in government doing anything? Well, I personally don’t think our prime minister is doing enough. Although our prime minister has spoken about this issue publicly, I’m guessing that he hasn’t stated clearly enough that Asian-Canadians aren’t the cause of Covid-19, but rather that we’re victims to this virus like everyone else. (Since that is all he’s really done so far, and the cases of Anti-Asian attacks are still rising.) Another reason for why I don’t think he’s doing enough is because of what Amy Go, the president of the Chinese Canadian National Council for Social Justice, said, “While the prime minister has spoken up publicly, we have not seen a parliamentary motion to put this in our Parliament so that there is a clear condemnation of hate against Asians.” This tells us that our prime minister hasn’t taken any serious actions for these Anti-Asian Attacks yet. On the other hand, our B.C. premier, John Horgan, is doing quite a good job in my opinion. He and his government are currently working on anti-racism legislation. (Which means he’s trying to take action against these Anti-Asian attacks.) Horgan mentions how there are difficulties in prosecuting hate crimes, as opposed to violent crimes, but he says it’s still important to do so. Something that I absolutely thank him for saying is how he said, “violence against people of colour needs to be treated as a hate crime.”

There is one important place in society where I think this kind of Asian-Canadian hate behaviour should absolutely be highlighted and criticized, which are schools. First off, there’s always going to be racism and discrimination in today’s world. Although, if we want to decrease the number of people getting discriminated for their race, people should be taught when they’re still young that all of this is wrong. I personally think that schools are the probably one of the most important places for people to learn about racism. What the teachers teach their students, will affect the student’s mindset as they grow older. For example, teachers should be teaching their students right now that just because Covid-19 started in China, doesn’t mean that people have the right to be blaming, harassing, mistreating, nor use violence against Asian-Canadians and Asian-Americans when they have absolutely nothing to do with this virus beginning.

Although most of us don’t have the highest power in society, there’s still many things we can do to help Asian-Canadians. First off, we can talk about this ongoing issue to our parents, relatives, friends, or just anyone we know. This may sound kind of useless, but there are still a whole bunch of people out there who aren’t aware of the Asian-Canadian hate crimes yet. Another thing we could all do is to stand up and defend a person who’s Asian-Canadian if they’re ever being harassed or mistreated in public. Some Asian-Canadians are genuinely afraid to walk in public now, thinking that something bad may happen to them even if they mind their own business. If you feel as if a situation is too dangerous at the moment to handle/defend on your own (especially if you’re Asian-Canadian like me), you should still call for help or do anything you can to stop the situation from happening. Believe it or not, there’s always going to be people who just ignore and walk away, even if someone’s being beaten up.

All I can say is that all these Asian-Canadian hate crimes are truly unacceptable. People have no right whatsoever to put the blame on us Asian-Canadians for the virus when we’re literally born in Canada. I hope our prime minister can start taking more actions since cases of Anti-Asian attacks are going to keep rising and rising. Do you think that all this nonsense of Asian-Canadian hate crimes is going to decrease as the pandemic slowly fades away, since we have more vaccines now?

BLOG POST 8 (I think it’s the 8th one) By: Yasmine Azizi
Good morning/afternoon today I will be talking to you about hate crimes. If you don’t know what a hate crime is, here let me tell you. A hate crime is a crime against someone for their religion, race, gender, etc. Unfortunately hate crimes have happened before, many have happened but I’m not going to go to in detail so I can say more later.

    1. We all know Joe Biden, right? The current president of the United States? Well, he noticed all the protests against Asian hate, and he did something about it, Biden passed an anti-Asian crime bill which would respond to everything the Asian hate. How about we go to the leader of our country, Justin Trudeau. Trudeau is talking very openly about this topic for example he is advising Canadians not to participate in these acts of hatred and racism. He was mainly talking about how Muslims have been getting a lot of discrimination after terrorists killed more than 120 people in attack across Paris last week.

    2. Honestly hate crimes happen everywhere nowadays but I can’t think of certain places where they happen except for schools. In 2001 9/11 happened in New York and since then Muslims have been disgraced because the person who made 9/11 happen, Osama Bin Laden. Since then, not even just schools have discrimination, everywhere has. For example, once on Eid I was at the mall (it was a school day and I was supposed to be in school, but my parents let me skip on Eid.) and while my dad and brother were in the bathroom, I was in a store right beside the bathroom looking around and some Karen comes walking up to me asking me “Aren’t you supposed to be in school?” I told her the reason why and she said “that’s no reason to skip school! Where’s your parents?” I walked away after she said that and I didn’t say anything to my dad or brother and later when we’re walking out, I see the same Karen with security following us, long story short she thought I had a bomb, or a gun and I was going to shoot up the place.

    3. I don’t know what I can do except for going to protests but we could also meet someone first before judging someone for their religion, race, and/or gender. We can at least make everyone feel safe where they are because everyone deserves that no matter what they look like or who they are. Well, unless it’s Donald Trump then we’re throwing him out the window. Be like YEETTTT with him.

    4. Everyone’s probably going to say this but it’s fineeeeee. It’s terrible, absolutely terrible. As someone who’s kind of experienced it why do you have to be judged for your race? Your religion? Your gender? Or who you are in general? You should accept someone for who they are and if you can’t do that keep it to yourself it could break them, and they don’t deserve that. No one does. Don’t take privilege for granted, for that matter don’t take anything for granted. It can all go away so quickly.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my blog post I really appreciate it. Have a nice day and make sure you try not to get kidnapped.
    Love Yasmine Azizi😊

from asian fishing to getting most of your eye lid removed in surgery people could say that most of the younger people these days wanna look like them so there is no way for them to be hated so much. but just like the cultures of different indigenous people and people of colour it is only when it is easy to take all the culture out of them and copy and paste it on to themselves. and especially for halloween many cultures become a trend and people just through on a over priced cheep clothing and most of the time people don’t even know what they are dressed up as. but as soon as a person of colour says something about how people that are white have some interesting food taste all of a sudden it is harassment. but we are talking about asian hate now and i think that governors aren’t doing enough it’s society around them that goes the extra mile to post and share the problems that they went through, it’s not the governors making all the petitions and places to find information people taking time out of their day to share their stories. so they really aren’t elon musk just last night did a mother’s day special on SNL and for him it was really difficult growing up he was the kid who didn’t talk and had Etchberger‘s. but some how he re-made Electric cars and is making history every year. and yes his story is amazing but he only could have done it with the white skin. and there is no fight there i know what he is doing for the would and i think it is great but he had something that not everyone with amazing ideas like him but have different backgrounds witch stop them for as far as i know to not exceed in there life.

teaching these kind of topics to young (as in 5-8 years old) is kind of hard but what is even worse is the non white community in that class and what they have to deal with ok the day to day basis. but the news is why everyone looks at abs i don’t think that Global news should just say what is happening but they should also take more time (like 30 seconds) to explain how to slow down all the hate and i think with enough work it can happen.

i know my dad “means well” but i still let some steam off when he says some of the most racist things under his breath and i am very into these types of topics so i stand my ground and i tell him what he needs to hear. and for most people it is hard that’s why main sources of social media can let asian people say their truth and news stations. and i am aware that it is not on track of the question but if you re-post tweets of anything that relates to this topic of which ever one inspires you even if you only have 20 followers it still means a lot and many petitions are going around and it will only take seconds out of your day.

I think that people can’t try to post the way they feel on social media and be taken down for truthfuly stupid “guidelines”. and the hate that circles nowadays kills me because people wanna look like them dress like them but as soon as they see someone with an asian background and then it is a big problem. how it is so strange that all of this is being thrown at them but they have to just “deal with it”

Those are my thoughts and feelings about this topic and again I just want to thank my teacher for going out of her way to make us aware of these topics and letting us speak on our behalf.

I believe, that as an Asian-Canadian, I deserve to feel safe in my own country, the country that I’ve lived in my whole life, the country I was born in. Unfortunately, many others do not agree, in fact, they believe the exact opposite, they want all people of Chinese descent out of Canada. All because they believe that the entire Chinese race is the reason for the Corona Virus. Sometimes they don’t just target people who are Chinese, no, they target anyone who looks remotely Asian, Japanese, Korean and even Filipino. The government isn’t doing nearly enough about this discrimination, they’ve barely addressed this situation, which is 17.7% of Canada at risk. They haven’t even really done anything about it, sure, there are a bunch of articles about it now but this whole situation only came to light not so long ago even though this has been happening for a while now. Surely the government could have done something about this. I don’t even think they’ve openly talked about this which is concerning because this is happening to so many Asian-Canadians IN PUBLIC! So no, I don’t think the government is doing enough about it, whether it’s awareness or protection, many people don’t even know that this is happening, and so many Asian-Canadians feel unsafe.

First off, people should be made more aware of this situation. And maybe people should actually start caring about the fact that people are literally being assaulted in front of them, because like I said, a lot of these incidents are in public. The fact that none of this is being taught to kids at school (besides this), they’re not even told that this is happening. Some people have the audacity to say that “it’s too violent” and for younger kids, yeah, I get that. But for middle schoolers? Those same children are learning about the war, slavery, etc. It’s not an excuse. I doubt that there is much punishment in university when a student decides to use verbal assault on an Asian-Canadian because they think we are a walking talking virus. Maybe we should change that, maybe we should stop letting white males get the upper hand all the time. Wouldn’t it be so much better if there was a bigger punishment for when people assault people because of their race, would that not help? There can even be posters in public areas warning Asian-Canadians to be careful, at this point the tiniest thing could help.

To help with this situation, people can help by boosting and supporting Asian-Canadians trying to spread awareness or have been assaulted. You can even help by telling others that getting people to know is our best bet, signing petitions and talking about it on social media are also helpful. The important thing is that when you are trying to get more attention to this situation, don’t speak over those who are Asian-Canadian or have been a victim of these hate crimes. So yes, speak up, but don’t drown out those whose stories are being silenced already, they don’t need people to talk for them they need people to support them. If you do see someone who is becoming a victim of these hate crimes, speak up about it, do something about it, call 911, don’t just watch it happen. But overall, just care enough about us to do something about this, don’t listen to stupid stereotypes, teach others not to as well.

I have many, many things I want to say, but I’ll keep it short, people who are Asian or look “Asian”, are being targeted, especially women. As I am both Asian and female, this hits hard, people are out for us, over something we didn’t do. Yes, it started in China, but we aren’t the reason for it! But it doesn’t/diddidn’t matter what we said/are saying, they decided to develop this prejudice that every Asian person is now a virus. What these racist ignorant fools are doing, is also xenophobic, they’re scared, and fear causes anger and hatred. The fact that they can’t even be racist properly, they’re targeting not only East Asians but also those who look remotely Asian, for example, Filipino Canadians. They don’t take the time to learn anything, not even the difference between Chinese and any other Asian group. These abusers are usually white men, they think because they are male and they have pale skin, they are better. Therefore, a lot more of the victims are women. 44.4% of cases in Canada are in BC, I am scared for my mom, I shouldn’t have to be afraid for my mom, myself, or any Asian-Canadian, but here I am. I think it’s pretty obvious that I think this whole situation is disgusting, yet people do nothing while lives are lost.

  20. Apollo says:

Hello my fellow peers. Today I will be talking about Asian hate across BC. This has been an even larger problem ever since Covid started, and I think it needs way more recognition.
John Horgan, our prime minister, has talked about Asian hate before. More specifically, his tweet about the hate crime, where six Asian women were killed in the US because of racism. He stated that in BC, we are still not safe from Asian hate, and that we need to do our absolute best to stop it. I think John Horgan has done a good job with addressing this issue. He also said that violence towards Asian Canadians is not just violence, but hate crimes, and hate crimes will be treated very differently than normal violence crimes. All in all, John Horgan and the BC provincial government has explained to us that racism and prejudice towards Asian has to stop. They are people, just like us. Just because someone has a different colour skin, does not mean we should treat them differently.

I do not think we do enough to stop Asian hate in our schools, because there is still so racism towards Asian Canadians. All we do is just tell us it’s bad and to not do it. Very descriptive… and who is going to listen to that? Very few people, that’s who. By doing that, we are still leaving so much room for Asian hate around our school. It can lead to depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts for Asian Canadians, and that is not OK. I think society needs to take bigger steps in getting rid of Asian hate in our school systems, and it needs to start now. I don’t think I can even count the times I’ve heard people in Taylor Park say racial slurs directed towards asians.

I think if we get more people to stand up for the Asian community, Asian hate would decrease drastically. But it needs to start with you. If you just wait for someone to step up and tell society it is wrong, it will never change. But if many people stand up, there will be change. It is not only about stopping Asian hate, but also about helping Asian Canadians who have dealt with it in the past, because you can’t let that trauma bottle up inside you. This can include free therapy sessions, and help from the Canadian government directly. But if we do not speak up, the word will never get there. As I said, it starts with you.

One of my opinions on this matter is WHY ARE MOSTLY ONLY ASIAN CANADIANS SPEAKING OUT. We are the ones that are doing the crimes, we are the ones that are making Asian Canadians feel unsafe, we are the centre of this problem. I want Canada to be a safe place for everyone, no matter their race, and I think everyone should share this point of view. So I’m conclusion, we need to wake the heck up. We need to realize what we have done wrong, and work towards demolishing Asian hate in BC. No, not just BC, the whole world.

I don’t think so because sure, a lot of people know and are aware of this discrimanation but, this needs to be put to a stop. I think that leaders in governments shou;d do much more than just address this issue because it gets to the point where some people are scared to even exit their house. No one should be so afraid that they are scared to leave the house especially in Canada. The phrase “especially in Canada” is used a lot and I think that “especially in Canada” not because Canada is perfect and has a perfect history because Canada does not. But we should learn from our mistakes, not repeat them. From the discrimanation of the First Nations to the Chinese imagration etc.

A lot of these assaults have happened in streets or in commercial establishments, like grocery stores. It is so sad that when these people are harassed, assaulted, intimidated, or spat upon, no one comes to help/aid them. In school, we should not only be learning about Math, Science etc. but we should also be learning about real things that are happening

Helping can be in many different forms, from helping someone you know that has experienced these assaults, to even just spreading awareness of these situations. Even the littlest things do, make a big difference in someone’s life. You could post something on social media or just tell your friends about it. It really makes a difference.

People who believe the CoronaVirus started because of the “Chinese people” are really dumb. First of all, yes, the CoronaVirus started in China but does not mean every single “Chinese person is a walking, talking virus. It’s like someone in Canada throwing a rock at someone, does not mean that every Canadian citizen will throw a rock at you. If something happens somewhere, you can’t blame the whole country for that one thing.

Government and other people in power is not doing enough because if they are then discrimination is not decreasing. The reason I say this is because if the government has power to change laws and other things like that. so, they can add laws that can stop discrimination. Another reason is that they aren’t bringing this topic up enough. There are many anti-racism groups don’t have permission from the federal government which mean anti-racism group can’t do much.

I just feel like other schools has people that are getting bullied or ditch because of what others think. Like people might think that “oh you’re a walking, talking virus. In my opinion teacher and people should talk about this more. Also, big organization and compony should express more to the world. They can bring this topic up more like they can hang poster up or use thing in ads a thing to show anti-racism.

I think that we should try to bring this to the governments and try to convince them to do something. If they can convince them then they could make laws that slow down. A way we can do this is to spread the word till hopefully get to government or we can peacefully inform the government about this.

I think that these issues including discrimination would stop if everyone were nicer. But that’s not the case right now. We’ll let it be I guess. No, no we have to do something to stop this. I just feel annoyed from all this discrimination because of how bad it is

I feel like the leaders aren’t doing much. I feel like they aren’t because when you look at a graph it shows that there is a 700% increase in Vancouver and 44% increase in BC. With these 2-staggering increase in Canada, I feel like there should be some kind of fine/arrest for those who take these too far. Most are verbal but some people become more physical and spit on people which I feel like the leaders can probably do something about those.

Schools and workplaces can also be condemned (I really can’t understand this) by telling them what’s happening and making them not do the same mistakes as if they carry this to the next generation. We won’t be able to change. Another reason why we need to condemn schools is so that they/we can help fix the problem and find a solution as most schools learn. And find solutions.

We can make Asian Canadians feel safe is maybe making a neighborhood where all Asian Canadians can be and not get worried. We can also help by maybe making consequences is someone does ___. We can also start protest all over Canada talking about the topic and making it so that we let everyone learn about the topic as its not only Asian hate but maybe in the future some kind of new hate will come and we can realize what we did wrong.

When we look at graphs. Not a lot are coming from America but from Canada because of immigrants so bc and Vancouver where people usually rent is a hot spot for people to do Asian hate. I also have a small question to the government but why do they only talk but not take any precautions like start telling people about this and show what it can do? mmmm sry cause i post late and sentence 🙁

Asian hate and black lives matter and hate crimes during 2020 to 2021.

Hello, my name is icheng in 2020 to 2021 there is a lot of discrimination like George Floyd getting killed because he is black so now the black lives protest to make black people even with white people. not only black people are discriminated but now Asian people are being discriminated too, because of the covid 19. Black lives matter and Asian hate is getting worse and worse every day. police and the government are not standing up and saying something to the people that is discrimination the Asian people and the black people. The largest increased in reported anti-Asian hate is in New York city.

In 2020 to 2021 there is a lot of prejudice about Asian people and black lives matter like people judge people because beliefs and gender stereotypes so if a person is prejudice someone, they won’t get near them call them names bully them etc… and to one what that to happen to themself so we must stop this, because it is causing the world problems, like violence gun shooting etc….we can stop this by working together. When people are prejudice, they will not get the same money when they are doing the same job, because of their religion beliefs etc… opportunity’s will be gone for example there is and black person and a white person there are applying for the same job but maybe of the black persons skin color is black so maybe she or he will lose the opportunities having that job.

In 2020 to 2021 there is a lot of Xenophobia. Xenophobia is like discrimination, but it is extreme discrimination it is discrimination people cultural traditions, objects, language, clothing, music, religion and people based on different beliefs or like dislike etc….the government is not do anything about this thing.

In 2020 to 2021 there is a lot of racism around the world like people are being treated differently, because of their skin, so they are treated unequally. The largest increased in reported Black Lives Matter is in the United States. Some polices are racism for example Derek Chauvin. Racism is happening for years now. Most of the violence is happening in the United States. 14,000 the protesters are arrested, because they are protesting. It is so much hate it is the biggest protest in the United States in history, so it is that important to stop Discriminating the black people and the Asian people. The black lives protests are also peacefully.

In 2020 to 2021 there is a lot of Stereotypes about Asian people and the black people. There is Stereotypes about like every Asian people have covid, because like the covid started in china, but that does not mean that every Asian person have covid, white people also have covid too. There are stereotypes about black people are like the Jim crow law or black face like people paint there self-up as a black person, but they are white then they act dumb and silly and show people what they are like, but they are not really like that, so they are just making thing up, so now there is people think that is really how they act, but that is not true, so now that is a stereotype about the black people. Thank you for listening.

    This is 23 sentence.

I think that the Government are not doing enough because it is still happening right now, and the people won’t stop. Another reason is that when the Prime Minister say that they try to protect the problem! But they actual don’t and care about it.

My thought on what more with should do is in schools by telling kids about this so when they grow up, they will know about the world and what people so they have a better life. We should do more in high school teacher jobs because kids that grow up from high sometimes get jerky.

Things that we can do is try to get a big speech about why respecting any type of color person is important and also we could protect on a street with the most people there.

I think that this problem is really just another similar problem to the black live matter because it is another thing about racism.
