Outside the Gates

Outside the Gates

Today’s historical fiction story, Outside the Gates, was a very suspenseful and informative piece of writing. I learned many new facts about World War II through reading about Hannah’s experience and through the details of the story. For example, I learned that children could volunteer to do work and that they were in dormitories according to their gender. I wonder if they were separated from their parents in the ghetto and how that would feel for them? What would it have been like as a child during the Second World War? How did you feel about this story and what did you learn from it?

  1. I think that Hannah had an intense feeling because she was sent to the ghetto just because she is Jewish, she didn’t do anything it was just her religion.Hannah was also separated from her parents, her own family. What would you feel like if you were in the same situation as Hannah?

  2. I felt very curious about the story, because is Hannah going to die or is her mother fine or ok? What I learned from the story is that they collect Jewish people every time and maybe every year. I also learned what was a ghetto is, I loved to explain what a ghetto is but I kinda forgot so I’ll try my best! I think a ghetto is like a jail or a prison that they keep children for years or days to work and to let them die. The children had to work to get more food because they only get one meal a day! I like this story but I really want to know what happened at the end. And I’m going to write a lot about my Reader’s Response because I have a lot of ideas!

  3. I got really excited and curious at the end because when the story just ended without saying whether the Nazis found out that Hannah stole their food and killed her or that Hannah got away safely and her mother got better. At the end when it said that thousands of Jewish were sent to death camps all over Europe and were murdered, I was really sad and I was also very disapointed at the Nazis because Jewish people are humans too, and the Nazis didn’t treat them like one.I mean it would be so terrible if you were killed just because of your culture.Do you think so too?
