Spring flowers!

We painted the backgrounds and experimented with changing paint colours. We added white or black to make a colour lighter or darker, and mixed some colours together to make new colours. Then we made flowers and added them to our paintings.

Let’s hope these flowers bring on some warmer weather ahead!  These are now on our bulletin board in the hallway.

Drawing Faces

We have been doing guided drawing lessons.  This is where I draw things one step at a time, and the students copy.  Last week, we drew our own faces!  We used a mirror to look at our own faces.  We talked about face shapes and different ways to draw eyes, noses, and mouths. We looked at cartoon drawings as well as realistic drawings.  I am amazed at how well everyone’s faces turned out!

Can you guess whose faces these are?

A Community Christmas

Our Christmas event was a hit!  There was singing in the gym, hot chocolate and apple cider, and gingerbread men decorating contests in our classrooms.  Families got to take photos with two elves.  Many of my students brought their younger siblings, so there were quite a few toddlers joining in the fun too.

A big thanks to our music teacher, Ms. V. for doing so much organizing, and to our wonderful parent volunteers!  Volunteers baked over 250 gingerbread men!  What a fun night!

Snowing in our classroom

At an arts & crafts fair over the summer, I saw an art technique that I’ve been wanting to incorporate into my classroom – rolling marbles in paint!  It might be too early for snow in late November, but not for these kids!  They had lots of fun rolling a marble in white paint over their blue paper, as they created their snow globes!

We also created snowmen and pasted these inside our snow globes. I love how each and every one is so unique!  The circle templates were drawn by me for them to cut out, but most kids chose to cut out their own hats and carrot noses.  You’ll have to come look at the bulletin board in the hallway to see the rest of the snowman snow globes!
