Is the Moon a Bowl of Milk?

Kitten’s First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes

Division 10 read Kevin Henkes book “Kitten’s First Full Moon”.  The kitten in the story thought the full moon was a bowl of milk and kept trying to get to it.  We know that the moon is not made of milk or cheese.

We did this science experiment to see the chemical reaction that occurs when you mix milk, food coloring and detergent.

Supplies:IMG_0533Steps:

Fill the pie tin with enough milk to completely cover the bottom.

Add different colors of food coloring to the center of the pie plate.

Dip a Q-Tip in dishwashing detergent and then touch the Q-Tip to the center of the pie plate,  Watch what happens.

Here’s Why:

Milk has vitamins, minerals, protein and fat.  Mixing detergent with milk causes a chemical reaction to occur.  The soap molecules race around the milk trying to catch up with the fat molecules.

Try it at home.

What a great experiment!! Tyler was so excited to show me the experiment at home and use the new vocabulary words that he learned. It was so fun seeing him so excited and so directive and using words like “molecule!”
