In the blink of an eye, January is behind us and we are off and running into the month of February. February is Black History month! Classes around the school were busy learning and preparing displays about influential black people and how they have impacted Canada, the world, and society in general. We participated in the gallery tour on Friday afternoon and saw some great and very informative displays. These will be up all month and every day in the morning announcements we will be hearing more about what each class learned. 
Our class will also be contributing to those announcements — Thursday and Friday. In addition to that, there are lots of other fun and exciting times coming our way. Next Wednesday the school will be having a Spirit Day on which you are invited to wear your favourite Jersey or Team T-shirts.
Also next week, we will be having Hip Hop performances next Thursday (for the school) and Friday (for some of the parents). The following week we have Valentine’s Day on February 14th so we are sure we to find some ways to celebrate the day and have some fun together. 
The following week, you will have a long weekend because Friday, February 16th is a Professional Day and Monday, February 19th is Family Day. 
Finally, we will end the month celebrating Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday, February 28th. Whew, what a busy month!
As we continue exploring short stories and responding to text in different ways to demonstrate our comprehension, many of you are growing in your understanding of how important it is to write clearly. Based on our feedback from last weeks task, you all set a goal for this weeks story.
Many of you were focusing on using part of the question to start your answers to make your writing clear. Others of you were focusing on reading the questions more carefully to ensure you understand what is being asked of you. Some of you had to focus on using evidence from the story to support your answers. No matter what your goals, each of you definitely improved in your ability to clearly and thoroughly respond to what you read and share you ideas in a thoughtful way. Way to go, everyone!
Our study of Black History continued and this week we used the KAYAK magazine to learn more about Canadian Black History. With a partner, we started working through the magazine and discovered some interesting facts about many different aspects of black history in Canada. Do you remember the fact about the lawn sprinkler?
In math we are working with Fractions. This week we have been focusing on three key elements that we need to understand about fractions which are:
- fractions represent parts of wholes
- equivalent fractions

All of us have now tried Hip Hop, but there are a bunch of you who have also tried different dance styles too! Using fractions and percentages, we graphed our findings in a pie/circle graph.
In our Career Studies this week, we discussed how important it is to choose the right businesses for ourselves. We imagined what skills we have, right now at our age, and tried to pick a small business idea we could actually start today! We talked about the importance of planning for a product or service people we know will want and/or need. 
We discussed the start up costs involved in running a business and created a draft business plan. Many of you really know yourselves and your skills and were able to come up with some great ideas!
Our Hip Hop dance is the show opener, how exciting. The theme of this years show is “Dancing through the decades” and we are dancing in the style of the 1920’s and 1930’s.
The music is awesome and you all are learning the choreography at lightening speed. Sue, our instructor, has asked us to practice some moves in particular. The Charleston
and the Scarecrow. 
She also mentioned that we will be wearing black bottoms and white tops on our show days which is a nod to the tuxedo style of that era. If you have any bowties at home, she would love to see some of you wearing them!
