Our class has been enjoying our BIG buddy time on Thursdays where we work on the Core Competencies. It is so wonderful to see the older students leading the way and supporting our younger learners. Last week we worked on Social Responsibility. After reading The Smallest Girl In The Smallest Class by Justin Roberts. The students discussed how they could make a positive difference in the world. With their buddies, while tasting wonderful brussel sprouts from the community garden, students worked on creating their own Social Responsibility board game.  Some of the ideas generated from the students were:

-you threw garbage on the ground …..go back three spaces

-you helped a person on the playground that you didn’t even know….go forward two spaces

-you always recycle….go forward five spaces.

During the week of November 11th, the students worked cooperatively on giant peace poppies and peace poems which they then read at the Remembrance Day assembly. During that week, the students took part in discussions. Some of the questions that were discussed were…..

What are symbols of peace? What is peace to you? What does a poppy represent? What does it mean to be a ‘free’ country? How can I (we) make a difference in world peace? Why and what do we ‘remember’ on Remembrance day?

This month we have had the pleasure of meeting and working with our  big buddies in Ms. Carley’s class. This week the big buddies helped us build a Haunted House! The students had so much fun planning and designing their houses. It was great to see older students supporting our younger students. Check out our haunted houses!

We decided to learn about bats as we approach Halloween. We started with thinking about what we already knew about bats. We did a partner share about what we knew and then picked one fact to share with the class and record on post-it notes.

After that we thought about and shared all the questions we have about bats. The students worked together to decide how their questions could be grouped into categories. This will help guide our SPOOKY research about bats! Check out our work …

We have been learning about The Colour Wheel.  We have done several activities exploring and learning about primary and secondary colours.

The students mixed primary colours together on their paper to create a hue of orange. They used the paint they mixed, pastels, paper and chalk to create their Night Time Pumpkins. Take a look!
