Think outside the box Thursday

Good morning everyone! Happy almost Friday 🙂

Let’s get creative!

ART:

Using a black marker, write a large capital ‘J’ in the middle of your paper (do not include the top part). Now, turn it into a colourful picture! Get creative and remember I still need to see the original, black J when you are done.

JOURNAL:

I don’t know if you have ever helped do laundry, but sometimes a sock or two seems to go missing. My question for you is…

What are all the possible uses for that one lonely sock? You wouldn’t want to throw it out now would you?

WORD WORK:Your challenge is to find 10 words

Y R C A V E T I I T

MATH:

#1 The students were lining up for recess. The teacher lined them up one girl, then two boys, then one girl, and two boys. If there were twenty children in line, how many were girls?

#2 I see 10 flowers in my garden. The first flower is red, the second flower is blue, and the third flower is yellow. If this pattern continues, what colour is the 11th flower? The 15th flower?

#3 Gabby caught 63 fish on Tuesday. She threw 14 back because they were too small. On Wednesday she only caught 52 fish. How many did she keep from her fishing trip?

#4 Jason has a pet store with 24 turtles and 73 snakes. He sold 51 pets today during his sale. How many pets does he have left?

#5 I’m thinking of a 3 digit number. It is odd. The 10’s place is double the 1’s place. The 100’s place is double the 10’s place. What’s my number?

#6 If you skip count by 3 from 0, will you ever say 100? Why or why not?

READING:

Check out the latest assigned book on Epic. Don’t forget the quiz!

REMINDER:Tomorrow I would like to see your recycled creations. I hope you remembered to make something.

Well, well, well…it’s Wednesday

Good morning everyone. I have to tell you how impressed I was at your ladybugs from Monday. You all did such a great job. If you haven’t done it, or you haven’t sent it, I would love to see it!

Here we are in the middle of the week and almost the middle of June. I know the weather hasn’t felt like June. More like Junuary!

Here we go…

WORD WORK:Use these letters to make as many words as you can.

M R E M S U E I M T

BONUS: P R E E S V R N E C E A

JOURNAL:Choose 1

A) If you were going on a trip and could only bring 3 things with you, what 3 things would you bring? Explain.

B) If you could have 3 wishes, what would they be? (no…you can’t wish for more wishes:))

MATH:

There seems to be a pattern of 3 in this post. So…to start with:
– think of as many things in this world that come in 3’s
– make as many equations as you can that equal 3
– using only 3’s and the functions +, -, x, /, try to make the numbers from 1-10 (for example 3+3-3=3 and 3×3-3=6) Can you find the rest?

Now…
– W.O.D.B.?
a) 263, 505, 712, 73
b) 27, 423, 61, 54

And…
– Using 3 squares, 2 rectangles, 2 triangles, and 1 circle, draw 3 different robots.

FOR FRIDAY:Remember to continue with your recycled material creations. Show me by Friday.

READING/WRITING:
Please read the latest assigned book about Acrostic poems on Epic and complete the quiz. Also, try your best to write an acrostic poem!

So, Monday…we meet again.

Good morning everyone. I hope you had a fantastic weekend playing, and sleeping, and eating, and… whatever else you like to do on weekends.

Today we have some more work to do but you will rock it like you do every day 🙂

Here we go:

MATH:

#1 The perimeter of the gym floor is 100 m. What could the side lengths (dimensions) be? *Remember, the perimeter is the distance around so you add up all the side lengths.

#2 If I have a square table and one side length is 4, what is the perimeter of the table?

#3 Complete this pattern: 5, 12, 26, 54, ___, ___

#4 W.O.D.B.? 17 34 68 97

#5 Write the number 12,345 in expanded form (remember place value)

#6 I have $28.00 to spend at the store. I want to buy 3 T-shirts. Each shirt costs $8.99. Will I have enough money? How much change will I get back?

#7 Add any of these numbers together to get 20. 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 15 (For example: 15+5=20) How many different equations can you find?

JOURNAL: Choose one:

A) What colour would describe you the best? Why?

B) If you could meet a cartoon character, who would it be? Why?

READING:

Go to Epic books and check out the assigned reading.

ART:

Let’s draw a ladybug – click here

FOR FRIDAY:

Make something using recycled materials. Think about what you would like to build and use the week to start collecting materials. Some ideas for you: robot, bird-feeder, bug hotel, wind chime, a game like tic-tac-toe. I look forward to seeing your creations on Friday!

T.G.I.F.

Thank goodness it’s Friday! I am continually impressed with the work you are doing. I think some of you have really found your groove.

I am thankful for many things…not just Fridays 🙂

JOURNAL:Choose 1

A) What, or who, are you thankful for? Why?

B) What is the best way to show gratitude?

THINKING:

I need you to think about the last couple of months. I want you to list 3 things you are most proud of. Please try to list school related things. For example, you could write that you are proud of how much you have learned to use the computer. Use because to explain.

MATH:

#1 I have 4 buckets with 5 water balloons in each. If I want to play with 4 other friends (total of 5 people) is there another way we can share the balloons? – Think fact families

#2 I built a rectangular garden with perimeter 24 m. What could the side lengths of my garden be?

#3 John has 4,324 envelopes and he drops 2,350 in the mud. How many envelopes did not get ruined?

#4 Sam needs 1,763 beads to make a necklace. She has 798. How many more beads does she need?

#5 Soccer practice starts at 5:30 pm. It takes 40 minutes to get there. What time should I leave?

#6 Jane collected 1000 stickers. Her brother spilled juice on 132 of them. How many stickers does Jane have now?

– Fact families – remember these? Fact families are sets of numbers that can be arranged to make true math sentences. Confused? Here’s an example: 2, 3, 6 are the members of the family. They go together using multiplication and division.

2×3=6
3×2=6
6/2=3
6/3=2

The / is the division sign on here 🙂 Anyway, as you can see, the numbers never change but the order of them changes based on the function.

Write the fact families for these numbers:
a) 2, 5, 10
b) 3, 5, 15
c) 6, 4, 24

*Check out the math video I assigned on Epic. It’s pretty cool.

Think About It Thursday

Good morning lovelies! I am having a hard time keeping up with all your posts so I apologize for taking so long to respond. You are working so hard and I am very proud of all of you 🙂

Today we have a mixed bag of activities. Mr. Wu is still planning on having his workout so get ready for that and I have some things for you to do as well.

WORD WORK:

Use these letters to make as many words as you can. I challenge you to find words with more than 4 letters.

S T S P S O A I M N H R P

JOURNAL:

Would you rather have a lot of money, or a lot of friends? Explain your answer.

MATH:

Which One Doesn’t Belong? (W.O.D.B?) – Remember to explain your choice.
#1
Square
Rectangle
Circle
Triangle

#2
37
64
83
55

Guess my Number

– I’m thinking of a 4 digit number. When you add the digits together you get 10. There is no zero in my number. It is an even number. The number in the 1000’s place is odd. So is the number in the 10’s place.

Word Problems

#1 – Johnny made 12 goody bags for his birthday party. If he put 2 balloons and 2 whistles in each bag, how many items did he need to buy in order to fill each bag?

#2 – I made 32 cupcakes. I put them in containers. Each container fit 4 cupcakes. How many containers did I fill?

#3 – If I have 2 tables and 8 chairs, how many legs will there be? (assuming these are regular tables and chairs)

#4 – I have a red shirt, a blue shirt, and a white shirt. I also have black shorts and green shorts. How many different outfits can I put together?

ART:

Still life – This style of art typically involves drawing, or painting inanimate, everyday objects (in other words, ‘things’ you find that are either man-made or they can be natural) For example, when you see a picture of a vase with flowers, it is called a still life.

*Find something in your house that is an everyday object, and try to draw it. Pay close attention to detail. Take your time.

Have an amazing day!

Words Wednesday

Good morning everyone! I hope you are all still keeping safe and healthy. I miss all of you (even you guys at school) and it is very strange being in the classroom without you.

Today, I have a few things for you to do. I hope you can put in your best effort.

WORD WORK:
Use these letters and try to make as many words as you can. You cannot use the same letter more than once in a word.

T E D R M E A N I T O N I

JOURNAL:
If you could pick one new thing to have on the playground, what would you choose? Why?

MATH:
You need playing cards for this. You can use adding or multiplying. Here’s how to play:
1. Shuffle the cards – take out the jokers
2. Flip one card face up – This will be your factor or addend (this is what you will add or multiply to the next card)
3. Flip another card face up and either add or multiply it by the first card you flipped up.

For example: The first card I flip is a 4. The second card I flip is a 3. My answer is either 7 (if I add) or 12 (if I multiply).

4. Play through the whole deck. Challenge yourself to see how fast you can go.
5. When you are finished – go again!

Patterns:
Find the next three terms:
a) 4, 6, 8, 10, ___, ___, ___
b) 2, 7, 12, 17, ___, ___, ___
c) 42, 39, 36, 33, ___, ___, ___
d) 100, 89, 78, 67, ___, ___, ___
e) 2, 20, 200, ___, ___, ___

Mindset Monday

Hello lovelies 🙂 Welcome to another Monday. Not just any other Monday because I will see some of you for the first time in over 2 months! I hope you are excited to come back. I know I am looking forward to being back in the classroom.

Today’s post is called ‘Mindset Monday’ because I want us to be thinking about, well…our thinking. That’s a funny thing to say isn’t it? Well, thinking about our thinking is called metacognition and it is something that can really help us in school, and in life. We’ll talk more about this over the next few weeks but for today I want you to think about the word EFFORT.

#1 Put the word EFFORT in the middle of a page (maybe draw a circle or cloud around it). Then, really think about this word and what it means to you. Is it important? Why? How might you explain it to someone else?

#2 Find a way to illustrate to someone an example of what various levels of effort might look like. (hint: think about when I ask you to fully colour something, or when I want a certain amount written)

Your journal topic for today is: Write about a time when you had to do something hard. Explain in detail what it was. Consider the following: What did you do? What were you thinking? How did you feel? What ended up happening?

Your Math for today is:

#1 Start at 2 and add 3 each time until you get to 20. What do you notice about the numbers you have written down?

#2 What is my pattern rule? (written like this: start at___ and __________ each time.)

a) 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, 23
b) 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, 160
c) 35, 33, 31, 29, 27, 25
d) 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150

#3 The hungry caterpillar ate 1 strawberry on Monday, 2 strawberries on Tuesday, and 3 strawberries on Wednesday. If this pattern continues, how many strawberries will he have eaten by the end of Sunday?

#4 If you looked out the window and saw 10 legs, what could you have seen? (try to think of more than one answer)

Check Epic books for newly assigned books. (don’t forget the quiz after you read “A Donkey Reads”

Have a fantastic day everyone! Stay positive:)

Feel Good Friday

Here we are at another Friday! I hope you all had a great week and have been enjoying the sunshine.

I have titled this post ‘Feel Good Friday’. Fridays can put us in a good mood and make us feel good. But what if we are in a bad mood? When you feel sad, or down, and you have low energy, what do you do to boost your mood? Really think about what helps you elevate your mood. This is a bit different than just what makes you happy. I’m talking about a change in mood.

For example, I could come home tired, stressed, or grumpy and when I put on loud music, my mood changes.

To do – Writing:

#1 What is your go-to for boosting your mood? Explain. (at least 3 sentences)

Choose 1:

A) Here’s a quote I found by someone named Jim Rohn – “Either you run the day or the day runs you” – What do you think he meant by that? Explain

B) Write about a time when you helped someone boost their mood. What did you say? What did you do? How did you know their mood changed?

Math: We are still being told to stay 2 metres or 6 feet away from people not in our immediate families (and maybe a friend or two).

#1 Make a list of all the items you can think of to show what 2 metres looks like. It would be helpful if you had a measuring tape so you could see for yourself how long that is. For example, I saw a picture of someone using a hockey stick to show 2 metres. I’m not sure it is exact but it was a good visual. Get creative, but be reasonable 🙂 Try to come up with at least 5!

#2 Choose one of your items and use it to illustrate people staying 2 metres apart.

#3 If my classroom is 16 metres wide (which it’s not), and I need to space the desks 2 metres apart, how many desks can I put in the classroom? Psst…think repeated addition…or division 🙂

#4 What 3 numbers come next in the pattern:
– 2, 5, 8, ___, ___, ___
– 4, 8, 12, ___, ___, ___
– 10, 21, 32, ___, ___, ___
– 29, 24, 19, ___, ___, ___
*challenge – 3, 7, 15, 31, ___, ___, ___

#5 Time yourself with your 6 timestables. What is your fastest time?

I hope you have an amazing ‘Feel Good Friday’! Happy Weekend 🙂

Wonderful Wednesday

First of all, I want to let you know that I have been going to the school to plan for the upcoming weeks when students start arriving. This is actually a complicated job because there are so many different things to think about. We need to make sure everyone stays safe. Because of this, I am not able to get to your posts and emails very quickly. Also, I want to apologize for not responding to all your posts. Please know that I have read them.

OK. Back to Wonderful Wednesday. Today I want you to think of something wonderful that has happened to you in the last year. This could be something that happened at home, at school, or as part of a group/team you are in. This can be really short because this is not your journal topic for today 🙂

JOURNAL: What is something that makes you WONDERFUL? Explain.
– Remember to check for capitals, periods, complete sentences. This is important whether you use a pencil or choose to type it out. I’m checking closely 🙂

ART: Nature Name – If you can, go outside and collect a variety of items from nature, and use them to write your name. Be careful not to pick flowers and ask permission if you are not sure what you can use. These are similar to our portraits we did with leaves, twigs, pebbles, etc.
You can choose to glue them on paper if they are small and light enough, or you could make it outside just loose on the ground. Either way, take a picture and send it to me.

MATH:
Measurement part 1 – Scavenger hunt
Take a piece of string, a shoelace, or dental floss, or…? Measure the length of 1 arm. Take this string (the length of your arm) and try to find objects in, and around, your house that are the same length.

Measurement part 2:
A while back we learned that there were 10 mm in 1 cm. So, if we have something that is 5 cm, it would be 50 mm because we need to multiply the cm by 10 to find the mm.
Your task – Find 10 things in your house to measure with cm and convert each into mm

Timestables – Time yourself doing your 8’s. I didn’t get very many times for the 7’s but I know some of you are getting pretty fast!

Good luck today and remember, I am at the school so I might not be able to answer you very fast. I will try to check as often as I can.

Motivational Monday.

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you had a great weekend. I fell off my bike again and scraped my knee but it wasn’t too bad. I was trying to ride between two trees and my handlebars hit one of the trees and I fell off. It was actually kind of funny 🙂 I wasn’t going fast enough to hurt myself badly.

I named this post Motivational Monday because I want you to think of a time when you had to get yourself, or someone else, motivated to do something. What did you say? Did it help? TO DO: make a poster, or a sign, with a motivational message. Keep your words short and add a burst of colour. If possible, put it in your window for people to see when they are passing by. Send me a picture.

In connection with this, here is your journal topic for today:

‘Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard’. What do you think this statement means? Remember to send me your writing either on this post, or on Teams, or by email.

For Math, I want to have a little, friendly competition with your 7 timestable. Write out the numbers 1-10 and then time yourself as you multiply by 7. Send me your best time out of 3 tries. Who will be the fastest?

Here are some word problems for you as well:
1) Chef Crazy was making his famous bug pie. His recipe called for 41 black ants, 52 beetles, 29 worms, 27 red ants, and 16 flies to make one batch. How many bugs did he use all together? How many would he need for 2 batches?

2) Uncle Chapeau arrived at my birthday party wearing 479 hats. He tries to get through the front door but couldn’t, so he removed 128 hats. He tried again, but still couldn’t make it through. He took off another 237 hats and just squeezed through. How many hats did he take off? How many did he make it through the door wearing?

3) I had 722 marbles ready for the big marble show. I had a hole in my pocket and lost 302 of them. I need 400 to enter the show. Will I have enough to enter?

4) The CN Tower is 553 m tall. The Empire State Building is 380 m tall. How much taller is the CN Tower than the Empire State Building?

5) The telephone was invented in 1876. About how many years ago was that?

Remember to check Epic and Khan Academy if you have time and want more to do.
