Story Workshop and Music

IMG_20150212_115558019This year(2015) the grade 1 2, and 3 classes created stories during story workshop, but also added elements of music to their stories.  Some groups created elaborate songs to accompany their stories and others added instruments and rhythms to enhance the meaning and characterization of their tales.

Reflections on our story projects:IMG_20150402_101607942

I liked the instrument part of my story.  My favorite instrument in the story was the agogo bell.  It was used for a line, “In a flash of lightning.”
Samantha, Div 13

I liked when our group made a story together.  I thought it was neat how we had characters from different stories and put them together as one story.
Rebecca,
Div 13

I liked playing the music and making characters.  One neat thing about our story was that we used string attached to a tree to pull it up for when the creeper blew it up.
Jodan, Div 16

I liked making the characters.  They were Joe, Night Penguin, Henry, and Beautiful.  I liked the story because it had a song that Dylan wrote.  I played the piano for my character Beautiful.IMG_20150306_093455513_HDR
Julia, Div 17

I liked creating the setting.  Ours was a forest and we used paper and clay as the materials.
Lydia, Div 13

Making the setting was fun for me because I got to use plasticine for all of it. Our setting took place under the sea.
Yelina, Div 16

I enjoyed how I got to work in a group.  It was difficult to quickly make another setting for our story because our 1st one disappeared.
Jason, Div 13

I liked story workshop because I liked doing the stories.  My story was called “Five friends in the meadow.”  Everyone in our group wrote a song called, “O Ice-cream.”  We put ice-cream in our setting and the music helped it.
Sophie, Div 17

It was fun because one of the characters was from a tv show and the rest we got to make on our own.
Evan, Div 13IMG_20150402_103944004_HDR

Making the story was fun.  We acted it out.  My character was Pig-Pig.  Acting was hard because it was a lot of work.  We wrote a song for our story called “Go go go go get the bad guys.”
Gabriel, Div 17

I liked making the people.  It was fun to model and shape them.  I made Elsa, Ariel, and Icy.  the characters helped us tell the story.  It made it really easy to tell the story.
Nora, Div 16

Something Big in the Garden – By Division 17

Ms. Yap’s class re-wrote the lyrics to Sean Mendez’s song, “Something Big.”  As part of their garden explorations with the sprouting chefs, tree walks with Mr. Yanko and Ms. Yap, and love of nature this class easily came up with new words to this familiar tune.  Even the actions were created by the students.

This year, Divisions 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, & 14 participated in the PDM festival at Kitchener Elementary School.

We were the largest group there, but the festival organizer said that despite the size of our choir, we were a very focused choir.

IMG_0808The students seemed to enjoy our performance of “Life of the Party” by Shawn Mendez, as the actions and lyrics were relevant and engaging.  The grade 2 students are excited and can’t wait to attend next years event.
