Weekly Zoom Meeting and Highlights of Last Week’s Learning

Good Morning Division 11!

We will have another zoom class meeting this week on Friday May 1st @ 10:00am.

We will do this weekly as it is important for the class to continue to meet, share our week, feelings and student work. Each week we will also have a read aloud to end the meeting. We will keep the Friday time as majority of our class was able to attend last week and a good way to end the week together as a group!

**This week again we will share how we feel and highlights of the week. This week please have your child share a piece of work they are proud of; this could include any project we have completed this week or previously. They can hold it up to the screen and if they feel comfortable they can talk about what they created.

Some of the highlights of the previous week!

I am so proud of everyone’s learning. I am seeing the creative side come out during many of our projects and inquiry! There are so many pictures and work to choose from!

April 28- May 1 Daily Activities

Good Morning Division 11!

This week we are going to try something different. Everyone will have access to the entire week’s activities in advance and work on everything at their own pace. Remember to do the activities when you can and if you cannot get to everything in the same day that is okay.

The first two activities are week long activities that are chunked into parts. Scroll down to see activities split into the days of the week.

Here is the plan for April 28- May 1

(Save the table below as an image to make it larger or use as a checklist for the “group plan” also known as our daily schedule).

These two activities will be week long assignments to work on as they need planning, prepping, building, putting together etc.

  1. Weekly ADST Challenge
  • Use blocks, LEGO, recyclables or any materials available to solve one of the following problems:
  • Problem 1: The city needs your help to connect 2 places. Build a bridge that will connect one side of town with another (or between 2 pillows on the floor)
  • Problem 2: You are stuck on a different planet. Build a rocket to get home
  • Problem 3: Suncrest is looking for a new addition to the playground. Build a new structure to add to the school.

There are 3 parts to this activity:

  1.  Use a blank piece of paper to as a “planning sheet” to plan out how to solve the problem (draw what your structure might look like and write down the materials or parts you will need to build your structure).

2. Create your structure and post a picture to Freshgrade when it is completed.

3. After creating your structure, write about how you solved the problem. This can include materials used, what you created and how it works. When completed submit photos and write up to FreshGrade.

2. Weekly Time Capsule Activity

Complete as many of the following sheets as you would like to complete throughout the week as this activity has many parts. Find a box around the house to keep everything in. Label your box with the title “Name’s time capsule”

We are going to keep everything together along with student work and pictures of your choice. We will share our time capsules when we get back to school; whenever that may be.

Tuesday April 28

  1. Mini ADST Project Part 1

Select a problem from above. Use a blank piece of paper and design what your structure would look like. Dear Division 11,

This week has been fun. I have enjoyed getting to connect with some of you over zoom!  I have been up to organizing my day as our “group plan” is very different from what our normal day would look like. I spend way too much time sitting on the computer! Part of the job, but reminding myself to get up stretch and go for walks as often as I can. I decided to take a mindful moment during work and think about things that make me happy in “I guess my normal day” and that is reading to you. I never knew how much it meant to me until this week when I got to read to some of you over zoom and will today in our conference. Reading brings us connection, adventure and curiosity. I enjoy sharing stories with you and it brings our class together and starts up many of our discussions. It is so nice to read to you and I have missed doing that each day with you in the classroom.

Love,

Ms. Toor

Your task is to write to me sharing something that brings you happiness. It can be anything that means a lot to you. Please share why what you decided to write on makes you happy. Post or draw a picture to post on Freshgrade along with your letter.

Week #3 Update

Optional Zoom Meeting: Friday April 24 @ 10:00am

Thank you everyone for taking the time to fill out time preferences in forms for zoom meetings. I know Friday is not the day some selected but I wanted to give a group meeting a go before the end of the week as a practice test run. This will allow me to figure out any glitches, time frames and a chance to re-connect before a long weekend.

Meeting Details:

Our first online class meeting will be on Friday April 24, 2020 at 10:00 am. We will be using Zoom to connect and a link will be sent out via email to all parents to access the video conference. Students will be able to see each other, if you or your child is uncomfortable with the video conference you may either turn off your camera or choose not to participate. We will start with a sharing circle where students will check in by sharing how they are feeling then we will end with a story. Our first conference will be short as this is new for most of us. If all goes well and students, as well as parents are onboard, we can try to do a weekly video conference in consideration to the times most of you have chosen. If your child is unable to participate that is okay, this is not mandatory, but rather an opportunity for peers to connect. Please email me an RSVP if your child can participate in our practice run this Friday or if you have any questions or concerns.

Link and password: Will be emailed to you

Tip: connect to the link a few minutes prior to ensure connection and use the washroom before the chat begins

Here are some things to keep in mind during our video conference.

  1. Be kind and respectful
  2. Be mindful of how long your turn is – we want to make sure everyone gets a chance to share
  3. Keep your sound on “mute” until it is your turn. This will help with the sound quality so we can all hear the speaker properly (I have access to mute your microphone during the session as well and un-mute when it is your turn)
  4. Please consider your background and any information you will be displaying such as personal information or photographs
  5. Please do not record or capture any part of the video conference
  6. Be aware of who will be captured in view of the web camera and what can be overheard on the microphone
  7. This is a school activity and you should be dressed appropriately
  8. We will limit everyone to share one thing first before offering an opportunity for another share

Reminder: Pro-D-Day Monday April 27 (No Daily Activities will be posted)

I say “long weekend” for all of you, as us teachers will be virtually meeting for our first Pro-D-Day from our homes. Enjoy Monday off and new activities will be posted Tuesday.

April 22- Daily Activities

Happy Earth Day!

Today we are going to focus on Reading, Writing, Personal and Social Responsibility in relation to the core competencies celebrating Earth Day. Today I would like you to…

  1. Earth Day: Listen to the read aloud posted to FreshGrade “What Does it Mean to be Green” by Rana DiOrio and the song on youtube.
  • Discuss: Why is it important and helpful to the environment to reuse objects instead of throwing them away?
  • What does it mean to be green? What are some ways to be green?

2. Loose parts/ Re-Usable Art/ ADST: Can you find something in your house that you can turn into something new instead of throwing away? Similar to our litter bug activity but you can create anything using those objects or use those materials and create a loose parts design. Can be small or large depending on what you find around your home. Feel free to get creative as there is no limit to what you can create. When you are finished share your photo on Fresh Grade.

3. Writing: Please write about the ways you can make the world a better place. Think about things you are already doing. Think about some changes you are going to make moving forward. Write them down and post on Freshgrade.

4. Reading Bingo

April 21- Daily Activities

Good morning Division 11!

Today we are going to focus on Social Studies, Mathematics, and Reading. Today I would like you to…

  1. Read Aloud

I recorded a video of myself reading Todd Parr’s “The Earth Book.” Due to copyright, each video will be shared highlighting the Title, Author, Illustrator and Publisher. The Read Aloud video will be posted to FreshGrade as it is private for our class only to view.

2. Nature Scavenger Hunt

Since it is supposed to rain on Earth day we will do the Nature Scavenger Hunt today! Find as many things as you can from the list. Post pictures of your hunt to FreshGrade.

Questions to consider while listening to the reading and during the scavenger hunt

  • What do you love about the Earth?
  • Why is it our role as citizens to take care of the Earth? Even as citizens at our age?
  • What am I doing now that demonstrates I am doing my part to take care of the Earth?

3. 3D Shape Video

Watch the video on 3D Shapes.

  • Think about where you have seen these shapes in your home or environment. Take a piece of paper and go on a 3D Shape Hunt and document the 3D shapes you spot.
  • Think about how 2D shapes and 3D shapes are different and similar.

4. Reading Bingo

Select an activity on the bingo sheet. Remember each activity should be around 20 minutes practicing reading stamina.

Week #2- Highlights

Division 11 you impress me more and more each day!

I can’t wait to listen to your reading recordings today and conference with you about your learning during our individual zoom meetings that will be coming up.

Here are some highlights of week #2

You are such a creative group and I enjoy seeing you all play to your strengths as well as challenging yourselves. Looking forward to seeing the work you create this week.

Ms. Toor

April 20 -Daily Activities

Good morning Division 11.

Thank you to everyone who has submitted and re-submitted on forms with preference times for Zoom conferences. Once I get everyone’s response I will be able to make a schedule with individual conference times and group times.

Looking forward to adding that aspect of learning into the mix and get us re-connected with each other in a new way.

Today we are going to focus on literacy, mathematics and social studies.

  1. Reading-Bingo April 20- May 4    As reading is a very important part of learning and our day in grades 1 and 2 I have created a Reading Bingo sheet. This sheet offers fun ways to incorporate read at home. Remember to read 20 minutes each day. There will be a new one sent out in a couple weeks (May 4) with different options to make reading fun and a part of every day. Please post a picture when completed on FreshGrade, remember to tick at least one reading activity you have completed a day.

2. 2D Riddle Doc

Name that shape! Before getting into 3D shapes this week, here are some fun riddles for you to guess what the 2D shape is. A list of possible shapes is listed underneath the riddles on the document and under this post. Post to FreshGrade when completed. Use your models from last week to help you identify or from the list.

3. Read Aloud and Litter Bug Art

Earth day is this Wednesday April 22nd. To get us thinking about what we can do for our planet and to get us started on the topic begin with the read aloud posted below.

Listen to the story Why Should I Recycle by Jen Green. Think about materials that you can recycle from the story. Are the similar to materials you recycle at home? Think about how you sort your garbage at home and at school? Where does the garbage go?

With some recycling you have at home, re-use some materials and create your own litter bugs. Below are some examples of what other students create. Ms. Silva’s class did this a little while back. Post your litter bug to FreshGrade.

So excited to see your learning this week!

Ms. Toor

April 17- Daily Activities

Good morning Division 11

Today is Friday Letters to Ms. Toor. Each week I will write a letter on the blog. The first task each Friday will be to read my letter and the second would be to discuss questions asked with your family to brain storm (web optional but encouraged to sort out ideas prior to writing) and write back to me by posting a picture of your letter to FreshGrade.

Here is my letter today.

Dear Division 11,

Thank you for your letters last week. It was so nice to see all of your writing and read what you have been up to at home with your families. This week I have been busy planning learning activities that are fun and engaging as in many of your letters you talked about enjoying the activities that involve art, reading, math ADST, creative thinking and movement. I will try my best to incorporate those into our activities. Today I am going to share with you my “ooopps” moment during this time of self-isolation in my letter, because today you will be sharing with me a funny moment or something that did not go as planned similar to the story I am about to share with you.

Last week I ran out of my “candy stash”. I have not been leaving my house to go shopping very often and thought about what to do. Most of my shopping has been done online so I googled my favourite store…Bulk Barn! Little did I know they have a place to order online and pick it up the next day! WOOOOO! How awesome! I started searching up my favourite candy (Alans Sour Cherries and Sour Cola Bottles of course). I got to the place where I had to write down the quantity. Unsure of the price and how to decide the quantity of the candy I decided to order in scoops. I usually put in 6 or 7 Ms. Toor scoops which at the time I thought would be plenty.

Fast forward to the next day. I ask Ms. Toor 2.0 to join me on a drive during lunch time to drive over the bridge to get the candy. We park, I get out with my sanitizer and credit card and walk into the store. I give the cashier my name as I was the only one in the store and she said. “Oh you’re that really big order, I will be right back.” In my head I was thinking I only ordered two things, maybe it’s the wrong order she was thinking about. She came back with a bag shaped like a large pumpkin. She said to me “sour cherries and cola bottles, 7 scoops.” “That’s me,” I said. “You ordered a lot of candy.” I was so nervous to see how much it cost…$ 70!!!!!!!!!

I paid and left thinking what am I going to tell my sister. I bought $70 worth of candy for myself “ooopps!” I got to the car and Ms. Toor 2.0 was laughing so hard because the bag was so heavy and I was having trouble carrying it. I have the candy in many small bins stored around my home. In just over 2 weeks I move into an apartment and thinking where is all this candy going to go. We ended up laughing so hard the whole way home. Parents if you buy from Bulk Barn, their scoops are huge

Love,

Ms. Toor

Today we are going to focus on idea generating, writing, mathematics in connection with art, and beginning some more about community which will be connected to many other curricular components in the next couple weeks. Today I would like you to…

  1. Remember an “ooopps” moment is something that did not go as planned. What has been your “ooopps” moment during your time at home? Write a letter back to me about your “ooopps” moment and post a picture of your letter on FreshGrade.

2. 2D Shape Art. Friday afternoons in the classroom is always our art day. Lets continue that each week at home. For the assignment you will need …

Paper, pencil, black felt, sharpie or crayon, any type of colours (crayons, water colour paint, pencil crayon, pastel or crayons). The picture below is an example of the art you will create. Use different 2D shapes you have learned to create your piece of art. You may also want shapes to trace, for example a can to make circles.

Take a look at the link below and posted on FreshGrade as the file was too large to post here. On the link it is the second activity labelled pastel art.

http://thismamamakesstuff.com/2010/05/art-smart-a-lesson-in-shape-mondrian-oil-pastels/

3. Lets get outside and go for a walk with your family, think about the community we live in. What kind of jobs? What is in our environment? How does our community run? What kind of landmarks or buildings? We will be exploring it more in the upcoming weeks.

Can’t wait to read your letters,

Ms. Toor
