We have Robots

Part of the reason why I got a jump on coding first term was because I was HOPING we might get robots at Sperling this school year.  My biggest wish came true and I’m very excited to announce that we are now the proud owners of 6 (!) SPRK+ by Sphero. (It’s kind of like a 3 inch BB-8 but transparent)  What does this mean?  A massive Term 3 undertaking by Division 4 to produce a HUGE collaborative and cross-curricular project.  If you haven’t had an earful by now I’d be surprised.

We are going to endeavor to create 6 themed, wood-based mazes for our SPRK+ that will eventually connect to create one giant maze. Each group will not only be responsible for designing and constructing and writing about their section but also writing the code required to guide their SPRK+ through the maze.

With a project like this a lot of the learning comes with the process.  It’s for this reason that I want to provide parents with an opportunity to follow their child’s progress. I have an idea to have the groups updating a page on my blog regularly to report on their own learning.  This may be done by group or by student.  While there will be plenty of photos no faces of students will be posted. Once I’ve worked out the details I will send a letter home with more information.

If you have any questions or concerns (or building materials) please do not hesitate to contact me.

We were very fortunate in class to day to be able to watch the live feed of the launch of the Falcon Heavy.  Division 4 was very excited. While the fate of the Centre Core remains unknown it was still considered a huge success.  For those who are interested (and if you don’t mind the click bait) the following link has some great information, theories and clips.
