Classroom Organisation

Here’s how some things work.  If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Weekly Schedule

Homework

  • At no point will I assign “Homework” to students.  Classroom work will be assigned and students will have ample in-class time to finish assignments, but if they do not finish assignments in class, they will still be expected to meet due dates.
  • If parents ever notice their child habitually spending more than 45 minutes a day on their homework they should contact me as this indicates that something isn’t quite right and we should communicate to address whatever is going on.  There could be various reasons for this such as:
    • Student is not using class time wisely
    • Student misunderstood
    • Student is trying to do too much
    • Student needs help with time management

Classroom Jobs

  • Each month each student is require to fill out a job application for the different positions we have available in the classroom
  • Applications must be filled out in full (full mailing address) for students to be considered for their desired position
  • No student can have the same job twice.
  • Students can be fired from their position following a verbal and written warning.  Written warning must be signed by a parent.
  • Job descriptions will be posted soon

English

We will be starting Term 1 with Poetry and working towards building a personal anthology.  Each student will be required to write 3 poems a week that adhere to that weeks guidelines. Poetry books will be collected every Friday.

Criteria Sheets for Poetry Books

Reading

I will be doing a monthly novel study.  Students will be required to hand in their novel study on the last day of each month. Chosen books must be 1) something they have never read before 2) an appropriate reading level 3) can’t be a movie or tv show (except in some particularly classic novels)

Dictee

  • Dictee exercises are worked on every day (typically first thing)
  • Exercises focus on understanding grammar rules and are the focus of our dictee program
  • Dictee exercises will be corrected in class, but will not count towards “Homework Check”, if students are not doing the exercises it will reflect in their tests
  • Dictee tests happen every Friday and are a combination of traditional Dictee (read aloud sentences) and questions mimicking the weeks exercises
  • Dictee pre-tests (in the style of the expected Friday test) will happen every Wednesday and Thursday, giving students an opportunity to prepare for Friday
  • Once tests are corrected and returned to students (typically the following Friday), they will have the weekend to correct their mistakes and return it to Mme Potyka for half-marks (typically on Monday)
  • Parents are expected to sign graded Dictee tests
  • Students are expected to practice writing out vocab words everyday
