April Precept

“What is beautiful is good, and who is good will soon be beautiful.” — Sappho,

Is this months precept, and I have a good perspective on what I believe this quote means. It has some relation to the story of “Wonder” Because of what is says. What is beautiful is good, that makes sense, take for example trees: they are beautiful and they do good for the earth because trees gives us oxygen. Now who is good will soon be beautiful, that relates to the story Wonder by a lot! If you haven’t read the story Wonder yet, by R.J Palacio, don’t worry, no spoilers. In the story , Auggie has a deformed face as i would call it, which doesn’t make him physically beautiful, but since he is such a heart-filled person, and is such a friendly fun guy to hang around, that will make others see he is beautiful because of that, and that he doesn’t need a beautiful face, he just needed a beautiful personality.

Now that I’ve explained what i think the precept means, I guess i’ll give my thoughts on it. I do agree with the meaning of this precept, but there are a few things wrong in my opinion. Not to get to specific in the precept but not all things that are beautiful are good. Take for example food, some foods look beautiful but they could be really unhealthy for you. Tell me if I got a little off topic or if you agree! Anyways, the “who is good will soon be beautiful” part is great, and i don’t think i could dis agree with that statement.

April precept

What is beautiful is good, and who is good will soon become beautiful. -Sappho

I don’t thing this is referring to how somebody looks. I think that this is generally referring to how somebody is inside. Who they are and what they stand for. I agree with parts of this but if this was referring to looks, I would reject this precept. If your beautiful, how do you know that your not a bad person. If this means who you are, I agree totally.

When your beautiful on the inside, Your going to be a good person. And if your good on the inside, it doesn’t matter how you look, you will be beautiful. Imagine August from wonder standing right here. Is he beautiful, yes. Most people would say no right? Well not if your pure hearted. He is beautiful and always will be because he’s a good person. That’s how I see this.

February precept

“it’s better to know some of the questions than all the answer.” by James Thurber I think that means that its better to know some of the questions as in the questions will lead to the answers, and that bit of satisfaction when you ask a question and then you actually understand the problem

Answers make you feel good but what if you got called on and you didn’t know the answer because you didn’t ask questions. See they kind of connect with each other. Without questions you will never find the answer and without answers the questions wouldn’t lead to answers.

Dec precept

Fortune favours the bold.

What I think this precept means is that if you’re bold and out there taking chances and risks good things can come from it. Fortune means good luck and it favours the bold who take risks. Because if you do nothing, will anything ever happen? Have you ever asked yourself that? I feel like if I sat around all day and did nothing it would be very boring and nothing would ever happen. But if I took risks and chances maybe something good would happen.

Here’s an example,

A boy is walking down the street. His name was Daniel. He walked along and then he spotted a young boy standing in an alley trapped by three older boys about his age. He was suspicious so he walked down the alley and said “What are you guys doing?” the small boy was shaking as the older three boys turned to face Daniel “What does it matter to you?” the biggest boy asked. The other two chuckled. “It matters because it looks like that boy there doesn’t want to be here.” Daniel said confidently. “Oh. Fine whatever.” The biggest guy said and he and the other two boys left. “You okay? Did they hurt you?” Daniel asked the boy. “No I’m fine. Thanks” The boy said. Then later while you’re online you see a picture of you saving the boy. And you become popular. Fortune favoured the bold didn’t it?

October Precept

Your deeds are your monuments.

I think that means what you do will kind of stick on you like memories. and what you do will be remembered by everyone and people will think that’s the type of person you are depending on what you do or say and anything you do and in the book we are reading the main character august does alot of brave things and people remember him for that.

And also his friend jack did looks of things he is remembered by. Like he was friends with august. At first it was because Mr. Tushman asked him to be friends with august. But then later on it was proved that jack enjoyed being friends with august and its really boring without him. and alot of people thought that was cool of him.

October Precept

Your deeds are your monuments. here`s an example; an elderly woman is walking down the side walk coming back from the grocery store when a skateboarder rides past and hits her knocking her down, a boy rushes over helps her up makes sure she`s okay, then carrying her groceries home helping her. This was videotaped, put on YouTube, and gone viral. Everybody loves that boy but the skateboarder is another story.

So what I think this precept is trying to tell us is to be do-gooders, be nice, Kind, and helpful. Because what if you’re the skateboarder and you just don’t know it yet. So think about what role you’re playing next time. Please. And okay I know nobody is perfect but can everyone at least try. Because the world I want to live in is where everyone is happy, prefect, kind, and pretty darn helpful. Peace out and remember this precept.
