Here are a few ideas that help you be a Creative Composer!

Choice#1: Create a new melody:

Here’s a cool, super fun new app I found out about today! You can use it to create a melody and choose the instruments (including drums or electronic sounds, or even sing!):   https://musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Song-Maker/

Then you can share it with me by clicking on Save, after you’re done. It will create a link for you to share.

If you want to get fancy, you can go on Settings and change the key, or make it Chromatic, so you can add sharps and flats, or add length to the song or subdivisions (so you can play 1/16th notes).

Or here’s another, simpler one that is also super easy and fun: You can also share the melody that you’ve created with this:

Choice #2:

Often songwriters start with lyrics (Although, many songwriters start with the music, but let’s start this way for now).a. Write lyrics to a new song (You could make it about your family for Assignment #3).  Try writing lyrics to a rap song! Here’s a lesson plan by another music teacher that will give you lots of good ideas and instruction! (It’s on a music learning site called MusicPLay that’s free for all students right now.)

Grade 6 Lesson 3 Learn About and Write a Rap

Or…Since it was  Earth Week last month,  you could try writing a song about the Earth and how we can take better care of it. Or write a song about how much you love STAR WARS. Whatever you want to write about is fine with me. 🙂

a. Start with what you want to say. Jot down some ideas. Then start with the first line – what’s the main idea?

Find some words that rhyme. This is a great resource: http://www.rhymezone.com/

I also find knowing words that mean roughly the same thing is helpful: https://www.thesaurus.com/

Add some more lines. Think about the ending; does it sound finished? Have you completed your idea?

Think about the rhythm; remember this will be a song, it will need a steady beat. (even poetry is meant to be read out loud).

Often you will need to edit the lyrics a bunch of times until you’re satisfied. Once you’ve come up with something you like, save it and send it to me.

Here’s a poem I wrote today for Earth Day: Maybe you’d like to try to write a melody to go with it!

I Love the Earth by Judy Lea

b. Take a song that you already know and change the lyricsl Check this out. A student in grade 5 changed the words to Halleluiah to be about his experiences in the time of COVID-19. I’m sure you can relate!

Choice#3:

put it all together – create a brand new song with lyrics and a melody!

Whatever you choose, have fun! 🙂
