Halloween and Pumpkin Carving, Take Your Child to Work Day (for grade 9 students) and Science World!

Alpha Leadership students came to our classroom and Ms. Hickman’s to carve pumpkins with each of our students. Ms. McCallister, the teacher for these students. was able to secure 30 free pumpkins from Safeway and Ms. Hall was able to get 10 more donated pumpkins from the Save-on foods near Metrotown. We are grateful for these donated pumpkins!  The students worked with their Alpha buddy to clean out, design and carve their pumpkins together. It was lots of fun to see how they all worked together so well and the big buddies were really attentive and helpful with our students.

Here are the pumpkins after they were carved!

The WHOLE GROUP!

After carving the students in our class invited the Alpha Buddies to play math games, board games or read together!

HALLOWEEN FUN! The students showed such school spirit and had a lot of fun dressing up for Halloween! All of the Primary classes met outside (it was a beautiful day) where each class paraded around to show their costumes and then students were selected to show some dance moves to the rest of the group. Thank to all students who were able to bring in treats to share with everyone!  We also watched a Halloween short movie called Room On The Broom (it is based from a children’s book).

On Wednesday, Nov 1, it was Bring Your Child to School Day where grade 9 students are invited to join their parents at work for the day. My older son came to help out and I brought my younger one in to read a draw-and-tell story and join us for Gym Class. The students had a lot of fun being chased by my two boys and Ms. Hickman’s grade 9 daughter as well!

We had a virtual field trip with Science World which talked about SCIENCE FOR A CHANGING WORLD! The students learned about environmental changes that are occuring in the world and what we, as individuals and as a group can do to help minimize the effects of these drastic changes. Students were given choices to do one of the following: Build an Insect Hotel, Participate in a Community Clean Up, Take Nature Walks and Explore Around the School and Explore Local Food. We will look into doing one of these climate action activities.
