Potatoes, Gymnastics, 90s Day, Salmon, Butterflies and more!

SPUDS IN TUBS- We have planted 25 seed potatoes!  The students are in groups of 4 and 5 and have each given their tub of 5 seed potatoes a name! We can’t wait to see how many potatoes we can grow and we are doing a great job taking care of these potatoes!

90s Day! As part of another Brentwood Park Spirit Day, students and staff were invited to dress up in clothing popular during the 1990s!  So fun!

ALMOST FRY! (photos taken April 5) Our salmon alevin continue to thrive and are growing every day! Look closely and see that their yolk sacs on their bellies are getting smaller and smaller and are almost all gone!  Once the sacs are gone, the salmon will flutter its tail to get to the surface where it will take a deep gulp of air to fill it’s swim bladder. This is the organ that increases and decreases air within it to allow the salmon to move up and down in the water.

NOW FRY! Photos taken April 15. Their yolk sacs are now fully absorbed into their bodies and the salmon are swimming and now foraging for their food (given 4x per day by us). Their are fed finely chopped krill.

GYMNASTICS- The students are working on strength, balance, coordination, motor-skill development, safety on equipment and cooperative skills during our unit on gymnastics!

BUTTERFLY LARVA- This is a photo of all of the caterpillars that were ordered for the primary grades!  We have around 120 caterpillars growing and developing in the school!  Our class has 10!  They have grown so much in the past week and they are getting ready to begin the next stage of their development…..the chrysalis stage! More photos to come!

Brentwood Park Family Movie Nightthank you to those of you who were able to join in the movie night in our gym on April 12!  It was a fun night where students got to share in a movie with both their families and with other classmates and schoolmates!  What a wonderful way to celebrate community!

PLANTING VEGGIES- We started planting early spring vegetables today and we are hopeful to get to eat some of them before the school year ends!  We planted lots of peas (snap peas etc), some lettuce and some radishes. The students always enjoy watering the plants, watching them grow and, best of all, enjoying the harvesting and eating of their vegetables!  Even more exciting is that we planted with our Grade One Buddies!
