January 2024

Number Talks- We are learning to explain our thinking as we solve equations. Students share how they solve an equation and it is written on the board and explained so everyone can see there are a variety of ways to solve mathematical equations. This was our first Number Talk and the students did a good job of thinking and sharing a few ways to solve the given equation, while I modelled a couple new ways as well.

Studies- We joined a Zoom session with the District Indigenous Learning teacher. She shared a story about a girl named Isabella Kulak, who is from Cote First Nation in Saskatchewan. She wore a traditional ribbon skirt to her class one day and the girl was shamed for wearing a ribbon skirt to a “formal dress day” at her elementary school in December 2020. A ribbon skirt has rows of colourful ribbons sewn at the bottom.  The colourful stripes are all symbolic and always tell a story. It can sometimes symbolize places, directions, and connections to family and to the Earth. As a result, a movement across Canada saw Indigenous women wearing their ribbon skirts in solidarity with the girl. Many people sent Isabella more ribbon skirts for her to wear. On January 4, 2023, Mary Jane McCallum, a member of the Cree First Nation passed a bill declaring this day National Ribbon Skirt Day.  It is a day to remember the harsh laws that once disallowed indigenous women from wearing traditional items, such as the ribbon skirt.

Signs of Spring- Our garden bin outside of our classroom is showing signs of new life!  We have crocuses and daffodils beginning to sprout!

A question to ponder:  Notice how half of this daffodil plant is bright green while the other half is yellow?  Any thoughts or ideas as to why?  I will be posing this question to the class soon….remind your child to tell you the answer!

Hip Hop- the students have been working hard to learn and practice an entire routine so they are ready to perform for the school and the parents this Thursday and Friday!
