March 6, 2024 – Day 1

English 8:

Extended silent read to read/prep for Lit Circle #3 which will happen after the spelling quiz at the start  of class Fri, Mar 8.

Read “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Sara Teasdale. Discuss for meaning. Note taking on how to plot rhyme scheme, and how to annotate poetry.

Analysis questions for the poem (due Fri if not finished in today’s class).

REMINDER: Spelling quiz and Lit Circle #3 FRIDAY!

English 11FP:

Grammar worksheet.

Remaining class time to continue drafting/practicing speeches. Speeches are happening in class this Fri (Mar 8). Be sure you have a printed copy of your speech to hand in at that time as well.

English 12: 

Stream of consciousness guided writing assignment using Carl Jung’s analytics.

Remainder of class time to silent read to read/prep for Lit Circle #2 which is at the start of class Friday (Mar 8).

March 5, 2024 – Day 2

English 12:

Collect analysis questions from “There Will Come Soft Rains” from last Friday at the start of class.

Note taking: poetry formats. If you missed today’s class, you will need to copy the notes from someone to keep in your book for future assignments.

March 1, 2024 – Day 2

The Term 2 cut off was today at 3:03pm. Any student work, including for portfolios, that was not received prior to this time will NOT be considered in the grading for the Term 2 report card. Term 3 begins on Mon, March 4th.

English 12: 

Lit Circle #1.

Silent reading – during the Lit Circle unit, students ARE allowed to read their lit circle novel and prepare lesson materials for upcoming lit circles in an effort to offset homework. Lit Circle #2 will be at the start of class on Thurs, Mar 7th.

English 8:

February 29, 2024 – Day 1

A REMINDER FOR ALL OF MY CLASSES THAT FRIDAY, MARCH 1/24 IS THE TERM 2 CUT OFF, ALL WORK, INCLUDING PORTFOLIOS, MUST BE COMPLETE AND SUBMITTED BY 3:03PM TOMORROW OR IT WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED IN THE GRADING FOR YOUR TERM TWO REPORT CARD. Students with I reports have until Friday at 3:03pm to resolve the I. 

English 8:

Silent reading (for the Lit Circle unit, students CAN read their novel for their group study for S/R to try to offset the amount of reading that needs to be done for homework).

Note taking: poetry terms (simile and metaphor).

Simile and metaphor writing & illustrating assignment: due Monday, Mar 4th

  1. write TWO similes
  2. convert your two similes from #1 into metaphors
  3. on a blank piece of white paper that is divided into four quadrants, write each simile and metaphor AND add an illustration of each to show your understanding of how similes and metaphors might sound the same but they do NOT mean the same thing

REMINDER:

  • Lit Circle #2 will happen at the start of class Monday; please ensure your readings and lesson materials are prepared and ready to go.

English 11FP: 

Students have this class as a work block to ensure their portfolios are complete and organized for grading in advance of the Term 2 cut off tomorrow.

If students have time remaining, they can work on the drafting of their speeches which will be presented in class next FRIDAY.

SPEECH WRITING ASSIGNMENT: Students will be given TWO classes (today and next Tuesday, Mar 5th) to write, edit and practice your own speeches using the information from brainstorming Ques 1- 6 last day to determine what you’d like your speech to be about.

Speeches must be 1.5-2 mins in length; marks will be deducted if you are under or over this time so ensure you practice carefully.

Students must submit a written copy of their speech on the day of their oral presentation.

You do not have to have your speech completely memorized but you need to be well practiced and avoid reading the whole thing.

The majority of the grading for this assignment is on the flow of the delivery of your speech including:

– your body language

– your eye contact

– the volume and clarity of your voice (enunciation)

Students are reminded to ensure their portfolio is complete prior to the Term 2 cut off on Fri (Mar 1); incomplete portfolios will NOT be considered for your Term 2 grade and a zero will be assigned for students choosing to not complete their work that spans the length of this term (Nov-Feb). You will be given class time on Fri, March 1st to organize/complete your portfolios if you have minor items to finish. If you are missing significant portions of the work, ensure you come to flex this week and get it done prior to the term 2 cut off.

February 27, 2024 – Day 1

February 23, 2024 – Day 1

English 8:

Students have the entire period today to do their readings and prepare their lesson materials for their first Lit Circle which will be happening at the start of class on Tuesday. If students complete the work required for Tuesday’s class then they can choose to continue reading their novel to get ahead for Lit Circle #2.

English 11FP:

Speech writing brainstorming work (in portfolios):

  1. What is important for us to change in society?
  2. What are you passionate about? What do you want people to know about you?
  3. What problems do youth face? How should schools change to better address your needs?
  4. What outrages you about your school, your community or your world?
  5. What do you think is important for younger people to know before they reach the age that you are now?
  6. What do you wish adults really understood about who you are, or what you need, at this point in your life?

English 12: 

Draft check at the beginning of class.

Peer editing component for your project: students must exchange their draft with at least one other student in the class to engage in peer editing of their work and vice versa. This is a graded component which counts towards the final grade for your paper.

Collect novels and update book cards.

REMINDER: the good copy of your assessment package is due at the end of Tuesday’s class. After the fire drill on Tuesday, scheduled for 12:45pm, we will be in the library for for students to access computers/printers as needed. Projects will be collected at 1:46pm Tuesday, Feb 27th in the library. Please ensure you have all required materials ready to be handed in by the end of this period. ** please note that the fire drill will cut into our time in the library so ensure you will be at a place with your project to still meet the deadline of 1:46pm on Tuesday***
