Shape Of The Week – September 27th – October 1st

Please note — Wednesday is a four period day.  You will have all of your classes.

MONDAY

  • Literature Circles book club #1 – share quotations and questions from intial response sheet (submit to teacher) (H)
  • Narrative Essay Assignment – review and discuss (H)
  • Narrative Leads – what are they and how do you write one? (H)
  • Write outline for narrative essay and conference with teacher about your idea – finish for homework

TUESDAY

Terry Fox Run – Period 2

  • Conference with teachers about narrative outlines
  • Class discussion about dialogue and punctuating dialogue
  • Start rough draft of narrative essay

WEDNESDAY

  • Truth and Reconciliation – first 30 minutes of class – school wide activity
  • Continue to write rough drafts
  • H.W. bring a complete draft to class on Friday (hard copy)

THURSDAY

NO SCHOOL – Truth and Reconciliation Day

FRIDAY

  • Photo Day -Seniors in the afternoon
  • Editing/Revision/Polish – Peer edit narrative rough drafts (hard copy)
  • Continue to work on essays
  • H.W. Good copy of essay due on Monday (bring rough draff too).  Read your literature circles novel.  Next literature circle Wednesday October 6th. You should have read 1/2 of your novel by then.

 

Shape Of The Week September 20th – September 24th

MONDAY

  • Class discussion of last week’s essays and questions – On A Serpentine Road With The Top Down and Dark Blue Bike
  • Writing about objects – in class draft.  Please come during FLEX time if you missed this practice write
  • Silent reading if finished
  • HW: read the essay “I Was On Fire” – excerpt from the Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls.  Annotate the text – see instructions in handouts (The Discrimintating Reader”.

TUESDAY

  • Memories of People – Spoken Word Poem – For My Grandmother – by Phil Kaye
    • Note how he takes his grandmother’s comment: “funerals are like birthday parties, except better” and carries it throug the entire poem
  • Read the essays, “I Was On Fire” (yesterday’s reading). “Let It Snow”, and “All Parents Are Cowards” (R)
  • Complete questions for discussion on these stories – “Memories Of People Essay Questions – Walls, Sedaris, Christie” (see handouts)
  • H.W. – Finish the questions and be ready to discuss them tomorrow.  Read your lit circles novel

WEDNESDAY

  • Finish discussing the questions from last day – hand in to be marked
  • In Class Writing – Memories of People
  • H.W. Choose ONE of your narrative paragraphs to revise and submit on MS Teams (due Monday).  Check criteria to see that you have included all elements. Finish the first 1/4 of your lit circle novel for Monday – complete the intial impressions sheet so you are ready to discuss the book with your classmates.

MONDAY

  • Celeste Headlee: Ted Talk – “10 Ways To Have A Better Conversation” (R)
  • Sharing interview transcripts — what common themes do you see between the questions?
  • Formating and time to write – take portrait photo
  • HW – Read over introductory handout on “The Essay and Narrative Writing” (H), Interview and transcript due Wednesday

TUESDAY

  • The Essay and Narrative Writing (H) – review and disuss handout from last day
  • Writing about ” place”.  Narrative essay: “Where The World Began” – Margaret Laurence (R)
    • Complete questions (H) and class discussion
  • H.W. read essay “Crying In H Mart” and complete questions #2,4,6,9,10 from handout “Anaylzing an Essay – General Questions For Discussion” (H).  Also, think about where you grew up or a place that is special to you.

WEDNESDAY

  • Interview and transcript due today
  • Writing assignment (in class) about “place”. If you are away, make this up during FLEX, or if your absence is extended (more than a week), email  me to discuss.
  • Literature Circle Selections – students to choose novels

FRIDAY

  • Writing inspired by objects
    • On a Serpentine Road, With The Top Down – a narrative essay on film – from Modern Love (Amazon Prime Video)
      • See questions for this narrative (H)
    • H.W. Blue Bike – Ivan Coyote (H) – read over the weekend and determine the thesis

WEDNESDAY

  • Welcome – completed learning survey
  • Course outlines, website
  • Poem – “Hands” by Sarah Kay.  Write a letter of introduction (see handouts)
  • Discuss Mentor Texts – See “It’s Complicated” mentor texts (see readings and resources)
    • Answer questions from the Lens Of A Reader and  Writer (see handouts)
  • Assign partners and go over the collaborative portraits assignment (see handouts)

FRIDAY

  • Welcome new students, review assignment, assign interview partners
  • Mentor texts from “It’s Complicated” – discuss questions from the Lens Of The Writer (see above)
  • Partners to interview each other
  • H.W. – Type out a transcript of your interview and bring a hard copy to class Monday. Bring your laptop/device to craft your final product on Monday.

If you have made it this far, you are in the right place! Stay tuned each week to keep tabs on your readings, assignments, and homework.

There are supplies that you will need for English class.  They are as follows:

Supplies Needed For Class

  • A three-ring binder with lined loose-leaf paper. Some students choose to have two separate smaller binders for each course, and others choose to put two courses into one two-inch binder with a divider in the middle.  Either option is fine.
  • 2-3 Blue/black pens for writing assignments
  • A pencil
  • 2 coloured pens for editing
  • White-out tape
  • 1-2 packages of sticky notes (3 inch x 3 inch)
  • 1 yellow highlighter
  • 1 small personal bottle of hand sanitizer
  • A water bottle
  • A silent reading book – more on this next week. Students will have a chance to take out a book from the school library or bring one of their own

For days we are working on projects

  • Pencil crayons and felt pens
  • Scissors
  • Glue Stick
