Sip & See #1!

Thank you to the families who made time to join us this morning for our first Sip & See event! Your children were so excited to have you as guests; we hope you enjoyed your time with them.

It was delightful to have you join us in our morning circle and to see some of your child’s literacy activities they have been working on. Our next Sip and See in the new year will have a Numeracy focus. Be prepared to test your mathematical skills 😄

We hope to see you all at the next one!

Winter Concert 🎶❄️

Div. 20 was excited to perform “So much snow!” for you (for two shows!)

Bravo to our three volunteers with speaking parts- you were able to memorize many lines and deliver them with enthusiasm! Everyone sang their hearts out… and with such bright smiles!

Thank you families for coming out to enjoy the concert. We are all grateful to Ms. Seah, our music teacher, for helping our class prepare and perform!

All about Heat Transfer- Conduction, Convection, and Radiation!

To understand how heat transfers in science, we made popcorn in two different ways today!

We learned that we can transfer heat to the popping corn kernels by:

  • CONDUCTION– which means there is direct contact to heat the kernels (stovetop- in a pot)
  • CONVECTION– which means heat moves from a gas (air) to heat the kernels (air popper)

Heat turns the kernels inside out into the popcorn we can enjoy…which we definitely did! We also turned our popcorn into yummy and festive popcorn marshmallow balls!

We will be making popcorn by way of radiation very soon! Ask your child how we will be able to make popcorn this way!

ADST: Sewing! 🧵🪡

Div. 20 showed phenomenal patience and growth mindset skills when learning how to sew today!

(ADST focus: Use materials in a safe manner and develop new skills – via new procedures, trial and error, problem solving, and collaborative ideas- through individual projects)

Students chose their winter stocking colour and learned how to thread a needle.

They will adorn their winter stockings with fun embellishments shortly… stay tuned!

Mini Hats!

Division 20 has added MINI HATS to their ADST skill set (ability to design, make, and apply newly learned skills to produce a final product)

Students created their mini hats using only yarn and toilet paper rolls! Their Big Buddies came to help them this afternoon and filled our classroom with such positive energy.

Div. 20 learned to cut pieces of yarn to the same length and repeat a tie-and-knot process to create several knots that cover the paper roll. They then pulled the gathered yarn through to create the ‘rim’ of the hat. And finally tied the pieces together and gave it a haircut to create a pom-pom at the top.

An impressive growth mindset was observed with this task- it was very challenging at first to loop and tie knots, but they ALL persevered. I am so proud of them!

They are now excited to teach others and to also create hats for all their classroom stuffy friends 🙂

Remembrance Day 🕊

Div. 20 read stories and discussed the significance of Remembrance Day.

Students shared their thoughts on what peace looks like, feels like, sounds like… and what it is not.

A few students in our class volunteered to participate in our Primary assembly to showcase their collage artwork, while two students carried our class wreath we made with watercolour poppies to the front of the stage to join the other class wreaths.

I will remember by…

“Wearing my poppy.”

“Closing my eyes to remember what the soldiers did for us.”

“Singing O Canada.”

“Thanking the soldiers who fought for us.”

Happy Halloween! 🎃

Div. 20 had a terrific start to Halloween despite the rainy day weather!

We started our morning off with our Big Buddies creating Halloween candy corn creatures!

Next, we headed down to the gym to show off our costumes and dance moves during the Primary Halloween Parade. Click on the witch below to see some of us dance!

In the afternoon, we played a variety of Halloween games together: Pumpkin Bowling, Ghost Races, and Hot “Pumpkin” Pass, along with a few other activities. Ask your child which one they enjoyed the most!

Happy Halloween to everyone! Be extra safe and warm this weekend!

Yummy Science!

As Scientists today, we made FINGER JELLO for some hands-on science fun!

We gathered our materials and observed and recorded THREE states of matter during the steps in our procedure. We showed a lot of patience while we waited for each layer to solidify in the freezer.

And the best part… we got to eat a yummy (and colourful) SOLID treat!
