The art of house-techno-trap

I never thought of myself as a big techno music fan until I found myself listening to Yaeji and similar artists for over 10 hours straight at one point. It’s a genre that can fit almost any mood, whether you just want something playing in the background while doing hw, a good party playlist when dj’ing or when your existential crisis hits at 4am.

Yaeji is a producer, singer, rapper, DJ from Brooklyn who keeps everybody on the hook with her amazing evolution and style change on every new EP.  Being bilingual she used that opportunity to write in both Korean and English, reaching a wide audience from her hometown city in South Korea and the US. Her voice is defiant even though she often sings in a whisper; her tone is melodic and angular. Her flow is like that of a rapper,  she links together rhymes and keeps rhythm, but there’s also an energy lurking beneath her delivery that echoes classic, soaring house singers.

Here’s a lil interview to get a glimpse of her personality. I would definitely recommend checking her out especially if you’re not familiar with this genre! She’s rlly cool.

Mid-Air Thief

Mid-Air Thief is an artist I discovered through Spotify’s recommended system, I starting listening when their 2018 album “Crumbling” released. Though I had never heard of them they upon further research they are quite popular in their area of operation: South Korea. They have an album prior but the more recent one is of much better quality in my opinion.

Crumbling is a magical journey of an album with swirling bubbly synths, solid guitar leads and hauntingly smooth vocals, the language barrier is non-existent as the feeling is so strongly presented in the sea of sounds Mid-Air thief allows the listener to backstroke and float through. The album won “Best Dance and Electronic Album” at the 2019 Korean Music Awards.

Erykah Badu

Erykah Badu in Nation19 Magazine.jpg

Erykah Badu is one of my favourite women in the world. She is a one of the most famous neo-soul artists as well as Maxwell, D’angelo, and Jill Scott. Her music is influenced by R&B, soul, and, hiphop. She usually sings on looped beats. What I like from her music is that they never get old. Her vocal has old-school vibes but never sounds old.

This is the collaboration of Erykah Badu and Robert Glasper who is also my favourite musician.

ssgkobe

ssgkobe is someone I’ve been listening to on SoundCloud for around a year.  In the past 6 months, he’s grown substantially, with multiple songs over 1 million streams.  He makes hip-hop/RnB music with unique & catchy vocal melodies, which is why I find him to stand out among the many SoundCloud artists that are around.

How to Layer Drums

I chose this video because I often use drum loops because I can’t play the drums so I found a video to spice up the drums while still using loops!

This video by Cradle Cat covers how to layer a drum loop to get a more interesting. dynamic sound with more movement. Cradle Cat uses Logic Pro X to demonstrate and show how to layer drums.

Taylor Bradshaw

Taylor Bradshaw has released his first solo album called Twine where many of his songs are about romance, and emotion. He delves in to many different genres and styles in his music.

I chose this artist because his songs are rich in emotion, are very well done and I enjoy listening to them! The mixing and production of the songs makes his songs sound captivating.

Bradshaw studied in The Sonic Arts Program at the city college in New York. He then went on to work in the film industry taking on indie film scoring jobs. He does narrative film sets, orchestral recording sessions, and Punk rock shows.

Learning basic piano chords in under 10 minutes!

I found that playing the piano can sometimes be super difficult if you have just started. But sometimes just learning some simple chords is a good start. These simple chords are also great to use for song writing!

Once you figure out how to play some simple chords, you would notice that it’ll get easier over time!

Just keep practicing!!
