Erykah Badu

Erykah Badu in Nation19 Magazine.jpg

Erykah Badu is one of my favourite women in the world. She is a one of the most famous neo-soul artists as well as Maxwell, D’angelo, and Jill Scott. Her music is influenced by R&B, soul, and, hiphop. She usually sings on looped beats. What I like from her music is that they never get old. Her vocal has old-school vibes but never sounds old.

This is the collaboration of Erykah Badu and Robert Glasper who is also my favourite musician.

ssgkobe

ssgkobe is someone I’ve been listening to on SoundCloud for around a year.  In the past 6 months, he’s grown substantially, with multiple songs over 1 million streams.  He makes hip-hop/RnB music with unique & catchy vocal melodies, which is why I find him to stand out among the many SoundCloud artists that are around.

Taylor Bradshaw

Taylor Bradshaw has released his first solo album called Twine where many of his songs are about romance, and emotion. He delves in to many different genres and styles in his music.

I chose this artist because his songs are rich in emotion, are very well done and I enjoy listening to them! The mixing and production of the songs makes his songs sound captivating.

Bradshaw studied in The Sonic Arts Program at the city college in New York. He then went on to work in the film industry taking on indie film scoring jobs. He does narrative film sets, orchestral recording sessions, and Punk rock shows.

Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel is known as the lead vocalist and flutist in a rock band called Genesis. He stayed in the band from 1967-1975. After leaving Genesis,  he began to have a successful solo career after launching “Solsbury Hill” as his first single. He was also mainly known for his intelligence and the different depth in his lyrics. I really like his music because it’s really catchy and how some songs show different emotions compared to others. Furthermore, I really admire how hard he worked because even though he won many awards, he is still known today.

“Sledgehammer” is also reportedly the most played video in MTV history.

Babe rainbow

The 4 O'Clock Drop - The Babe Rainbow — Grow Yourself Up

Babe rainbow is a folk/psychedelic funk band from Australia which formed in early 2014, a couple years later during 2017 they officially released ‘The Babe Rainbow’ EP which gave them a solid following. fast forward a year and they release “Double Rainbow” which was a more folk album but still a groove. This album really showed the world who they are and where they can take their music.

2019 was a very good year for The Babe Rainbow, with the release of ‘Today’ came real groovy chords and unique melodies. This mushroom induced album was a masterpiece in my eyes..

(fun fact)

Babe rainbow was reportedly about to wrap up a movie with an original soundtrack but it was never released

get psyched!!

Arthur shea.

I dont know much about the life of arthur. There is only one interview with him that i could find, but i feel like i know him just by connecting through his music.

Arthur is for sure up there in my favourite artist. He is definitely my favorite underground musician. He has a large collection of unreleased and fully finished songs. He is not only a solo artist but plays in a band called joy again. And they are also one of my favorite bands.

Arthur’s style of music can  psychedelic and have electronic feel, to simple acoustic songs. In my opinion arthur  is a genius and more people need to recognize that.

Operator Please

Operator Please was formed in 2005 for a battle in the bands contest in Gold Coast, Queensland. After winning, the five members independently released the ep On the Prowl. Their second Ep Cement Cement thanks to lots of radio play, word of mouth and probably just good luck got the group to a table sponsored showcase in New York. This showcase got the group signed to Virgin/EMI records.

The band during the second album cycle

Honestly, the music is great. The two label backed projects the put out are solid projects. The song that ‘blew them up’ Just a Song About Ping Pong feels like a can of red bull.  It’s silly and the myspace link in the song description just is the most 2000s thing ever. The band was referred to as ‘..The next big thing” by Perez Hilton. The band is baby faced and the song Is catchy. Who knew a song that was just about ping pong could actually be popular at any point in time?

Their second label backed record I think is one of my favourite pop-y electronic records. I think if it came out now it would be so much more popular. But alas, they were ahead of their time. The album Gloves by Operator Please came out in 2010. To not that much critical acclaim. The more monotone blunt lyrics weren’t appreciated as much as the in your face pop punk tunes about table tennis. Some praised the album for it’s more mature writing compared to their first record. I even saw a review mentioning that this band could be “one of the biggest pop groups”.   Say what you will about the record but it’s a easy to digest 80s inspired pop record that shows an air of maturity and I think if better managed by their label the group would have been much bigger and much more mainstream.

The band isn’t around anymore :/ The never officially broke up but they haven’t done anything since 2011. I love talking about them purely because of the almost super big band that could have been that started off like a bad high school movie. I first heard Just a Song About Ping Pong on twitter and fell down a wikipedia hole. There is something about the vocals and the fact they were a mainstream group with a violinist was something super new to me when I first discovered them.I could have probably picked a music suggestion that was a little bit more obscure and a less in depth review but…… I genuinely have been thinking about how I wish this band put out more records forever and have no one to talk about it with.

Another interesting bit is it was one of the first groups I got into that had demos available to compare to released songs! I love listening to both versions of Back and Forth:

If you went ahead and read all of this, go listen to my current favourite songs by this band 🙂
