Week of April 20th – 24th

Week of April 20th – 24th

Hi Division 5,

I hope you had a nice weekend.  We are heading to another week of online learning! At the end of last week, I emailed all families about upcoming learning guidelines.  Also, our district has a temporary licence with Zoom.  I will be sending an invite to each family individually.  Zoom appointments will run from Wednesday to Friday, from 10am-2pm.  Each Zoom appointment will be about 15-30 minutes long.  If the time I’ve assigned does not work for you and your child, please email me and we can find a different time.

Families, I have attached some documents and guidelines set by the district.  Please take some time to read through the documents if you haven’t do so yet. Thank you!

This week, here are some activities I’d like to you try and keep working on:

    • Read 10-15 minutes on Epic Books each day (you can read more if you want). Please only choose your own account/avatar.  DO NOT change other students’ profile.  Thank you!
    • Practice 10-15 minutes on Prodigy each day (you can practice more if you want). I have set activities and assessments on this program that corresponds to our math curriculum.
    • Complete lesson 3 in Science (lessons are posted on the Science page)
    • Complete lesson 3 in Data Analysis  (lessons are posted on the Numeracy page)
    • Complete this week’s Spelling lesson (lessons posted on Spelling page)
    • Check out Mrs. Araujo’s Read Aloud Episode 3
    • This week’s read aloud is password protected.  Please check your BlogFolio for the password.
    • April is Poetry Month!  Check out Mrs. Araujo’s Poetry Choice Board
    • Check out Mrs. Fierro’s Music Blog and complete week of April 14th Music Lessons (Complete both Grade 2/3 and Grade 4/5 lessons). And you can practice the songs you played during our last Christmas concert (Christmas Recorder Songs)
    • Complete 1 reader’s response in your BlogFolio (Read a book, is it fiction or non-fiction? What is the title? Who is the author? What was the book about? What did you learn? Did you make any connections? Anything interesting about the book?)
    • Writing and Social Studies:
      • We have Earth day this week and it is poetry month!  Let’s write some poems about how to care for our Earth.  You can choose to write a free verse, acrostic poem, or Haiku poem. Here are some poetry ideas:
      • Earth Day Acrostic Poem (1)
      • Earth Day Acrostic Poem (2)
      • How to write a Haiku Poem
      • Haiku Writing Paper
      • We will start on some persuasive writing skills.  This week, I’d like you to write 3-4 reasons why it is important to care for our Earth and what are some actions people can do to make Earth safer and healthier.  You can use the graphic organizer to help with your ideas.  Your goal is to write 3-4 paragraphs explaining your reasons and actions.  Each paragraph will have one reason and 2-3 actions explaining why it is important to care for our Earth. You can write it on paper and take a photo, or upload a document, or type it in your BlogFolio.
      • Sample Paragraph:
      • The Earth is a place for many living things.  It is important to keep the air clean.  People can drive less cars.  My family and I can walk more often.  I can plant flowers and trees to help clean the air.  When the air is cleaner, it is easier for people and animals to breathe.

To show your work, you will need to post it on your BlogFolio.  If you are posting photos or videos, it is best to use your portable devices (smartphones, tablets, or iPads).  If you forgot how to post, you can check out these instructions. I will check your posts regularly and comment on them.  If you need more help with how to post or log on to the programs, ask your family to email me at Shirley.cheung@burnabyschools.ca

Happy Learning!
