Word Work

Division 7 has been working hard to get back into the school routine after being away for about 6 months. It has been a pleasure to see them develop some friendships and become engaged in multiple activities.

In addition to the Word Work notice sent out recently, your child will be introduced to a new sort every Wednesday. They will keep one copy at school to work on for the week, and take the other copy home. All of this will be in preparation for their Word Work Review (test) on Mondays.  At school, students learn how to problem solve with partners and by themselves when working on buddy sorts, such as “Spell Back, Speed Sort, Memory, Hangman and Quiz Me.”

The first few weeks should be seen as a “soft landing” to help ease your child to the procedure and know what is expected. Gradually, or quickly, depending on each student, sorts will be more challenging.  It’s not all about having a perfect score. Instead, it’s about “Seeing it, Saying it, Hearing it and Matching it.” While it is important to spell words correctly this program is geared towards recognizing word patterns for students to develop independence when writing.

Keep all sorts in a safe place to review and practice throughout the year. There might be a year-end quiz at the end of the year 🙂
