Hi Everyone,

Today, we started off with our spelling test. I have marked all of them and I will be posting them on Fresh Grade tonight.

Then, I reviewed the three types of rounding for Math.

We worked on compatible rounding yesterday – rounding to the nearest 10 or 100.

Then, we talked about front end rounding which is looking at the first or first two digits in a number and rounding based on those. e.g. 1705 would be rounded to 1700 because we look at the first two numbers or 965 would be rounded to 900 because we look at the first digit (not a super accurate form of estimation, but is one of the possible strategies).

Then, we briefly looked at compensation, which is in an addition problem such as 51 + 49, taking one away from the 51 means it would be 50 and we added that one to 49 to make 50 = 50 + 50 = 100. So, doing opposite things to each number (if you borrow 1 one the left side, you need to add one to  the right side) in order to make the addition work easier.

Students worked on:

Grade 5’s: Page 51 #3-8

Grade 4’s: Page 47-48 #1-9, but not 5 or 7

It is for homework if it is not finished.

Then, we had snack and went outside for DPA.

When we came in, students started creating their 12 months of the year booklet as we are working on learning the months in French. Students will have their First French test next week on the numbers from 1-10, colours, and months of the year.

After that, Grade 4’s got to work on their Social Studies projects while I did a lesson with the Grade 5’s on the Canadian Pacific Railway and how there was a lot of discrimination present toward Chinese workers and they were paid less and given more dangerous jobs.

After lunch, we did our Daily 5 stations again and I started “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing” with the Yellow reading group.

At the very end of the day, students worked on using watercolours to finish their Starry Night Artwork and they decorated their art portfolios to hold all of their pieces of Art.

Have a good night!

Sincerely,

Ms. Wilks
