Happy Friday everyone and Happy Thanksgiving!

Today, we started off the day with taking up any questions from the Math homework. I went over with the Grade 5’s the shortcut method for dividing or multiplying by numbers that end in zero.

e.g. 4000 x 100 = counting up the zeros and adding it on to the first number.

4000 x 100 = 400 000

or in division:

4000 / 100 = 40 because you take off the number of zeros in the second number from the first number.

Then, we reviewed expanded form, standard form, and written form in preparation for the Lesson 3 textbook work, which we will do next week.

Example: for the number 13 192

Expanded form is:

Simplified expanded form:  10 000 + 3 000 + 100 + 90 + 2

Advanced expanded form (Grade 5): (1 x 10 000) + (3 x 1000) + (1 x 100) + (9 x 10) + (2 x 1) = 10 000 + 3 000 + 100 + 90 + 2 = 13 192

Standard form = 13 192

Written Form = thirteen thousand one hundred ninety-two.

The students were assigned a game where they were given 5 dice and challenged with a partner to create the higher number of the two and use the symbol >, <, = to compare the two numbers. The winner (person with the highest number) was challenged to write each of the forms to show the number that they rolled. Then, they were challenged to roll a lower number than their partner and keep score. It was a lot of fun – I captured a video of it and I’ll post it on Fresh Grade.

After that, the students had Music and then indoor DPA because of the rain.

Then, before lunch the students had Gym. We played a few running games: Octopus and Huckle Buckle and then we played Mafia, which was a lot of fun.

After lunch, we did silent reading/drawing and then we read a bit of “Wonder” as a class. We also made two short Mad Libs stories again, which was a lot of fun to practice our different kinds of words. Then, we completed a worksheet to make a story out of our spelling words to practice them.

At the end of the day, we had community time where students chose activities to do.

It was a fairly relaxed day today right before our long weekend and the students were able to socialize and play together nicely, which I believe is so important, especially after COVID-19 isolation.

The students were assigned their weekend journal: What are you thankful for? Why? Do  you feel lucky to live in Canada?

Grade 4’s: 3/4 page journal (or more) – not skipping lines

Grade 5’s: 1 page journal (or more) – not skipping lines

Students will also make sure they:

-use paragraphs

-indent paragraphs

-capital letters

-re-read their work

Enjoy the long weekend! There is no school on Monday.

Sincerely,

Ms. Wilks

P.S. Here is the funny story creator that we’ve been using for our Mad Libs and is wonderful practice for differentiating a variety of kinds of words used in writing: https://www.glowwordbooks.com/blog/category/kids-online-mad-libs/

The kids requested that I post this on the blog.
