So…Ms. Frizzle doesn’t work at Nelson & we can’t turn a school bus into a rocket ship to take us to the moon, so…

we stepped out this week & used kinesthetic learning to help us envision the solar system & its immense size…

…& better understand how far each planet is from the sun by creating a small scale map of it—using our steps & cone planets!

At the end of our walk we were a step ahead in our knowledge of the solar system!

Can you name the planets starting from the dwarf farthest away from the sun!? Click on each picture to confirm your guess!

Thank you to all the students who created questions to our Think Math answer this week:
The answer is 13 students dancing in a gymnasium.
There are 20 students dancing in the gym. 3 students want hip hop music so they left. 4 students want dance classical music so they left too. How many students are left? ~ Julia 😀
There are 8 students in the bathroom. 2 students are dancing but are in a hurry to go to the bathroom. 7 students are dancing. Then 8 return & 2 go to the bathroom. Now how many are dancing? ~ Daniel
There are 17 people who like the song You Can’t Stop the Beat & are dancing. 4 people don’t like it. How many dancing to the song? ~ Nicole
There are 15 students dancing in the gymnasium. 3 had to go to the washroom. How many students left dancing? ~ Casandra
There are 14 kids playing Skittles & one got hurt. How many in all? ~ Cayla

The answer is 15 snowmen playing in a snowstorm. snowman-2
There are 20 snowmen. 5 were blown away in the snowstorm. How many are left playing in the snowstorm? ~ Cayla
There are 17 snowmen & 2 get hit. How many playing not hit? ~ Bariki
There are 19 snowmen. The wind blew 4 snowmen down. The wind was blowing so hard that it blew 2 more down. Some children come and build 2 snowmen & then went back in. How many snowmen in all? ❄️ ~ Casandra
There are 100 snowmen. 85 got swooshed away by a snow storm while the other snowmen sat on the bench getting hot coca from Santa. How many got hot coca? 🙂 ~ Chloe

Calling All Athletes!

Nelson had it’s annual Intramural Track Meet on December 12th & the students participated in relays showing off their basketball, football, skipping & agility skills while competing for house points.
Division 8 did an awesome job in all events & were great cheer leaders for their team mates (special shout out to Red Team for their non-stop encouragement!)!

Merry Christmas!!

Merry Christmas Nelsonites! I hope everyone has had tons of fun over the past week celebrating the holidays & spending time with your friends & families!
After lots of fun during the last few days of school, including catching snowflakes on our tongues on the playground, I celebrated my birthday with friends while enjoying some crazy good cinnamon bun french toast! One of my families traditions is lighting candles on the advent wreath on the 4 Sundays before Christmas. Ryan & I hosted our families for a German Christmas on Christmas Eve. I had a bit of an unsuccessful attempt at baking rolls for Christmas morning. We then finished off our celebrations with a delicious turkey dinner with all the fixings at my mom’s house. Enjoy your 2nd week of winter holidays & I can’t wait to hear about all your celebrations in the New Year!

There are 12 elves working hard & 6 elves had to go to the washroom. 1 elf came back & got right to back to work . How many elves are still working? ~ Casandra
There are 200 elves working at Santa’s workshop on Christmas Eve. 193
elves did not finish making their toys & had to come with Santa on his
sled. How many elves left making the toys? ~ Chloe
There are 50 elves. 43 went outside to put some presents on Santa’s sled. How many left in Santa’s workshop? ~ Cayla
There were 17 elves getting their lunch & 7 of them left to work some more. How many are working? ~ Sahana

Grade 7 Gift Basket Raffle

Starting today, Nelson’s grade 7s are selling tickets outside the staff room for a chance to win 1 of 3 wonderful gift baskets. You can choose to purchase tickets for the Spa & Pamper, Entertainment & Snacks or the Toys & Games basket.
Tickets are $2 for 1, $5 for 3 & $10 for 7! I picked up 7 tickets today & am crossing my fingers! Join me in supporting our hard working Grade 7s!
