This Week’s Activities – Forces and Motion

| Posted in Uncategorized

Hello Div. 18!

Hope everyone has had a great weekend 🙂

Below are the activities for this week – please take your time with them, and do what you can, and what works best for your family. This week I am introducing a new concept that we have not covered in our classroom before – Forces and Motion. I am hoping to just get the basics across to students in Div. 18 and get them recognizing that forces and motion are all around them all the time. I hope you have fun with this week’s activities!

Please reach out if there is anything I can do to help.

April 28th – May 1st :

Core Activities:

  • Read 20 minutes daily – just as we would have every day in our classroom for Daily 5
  • Read the assigned book in your Epic profile, and please try to answer the questions about that book. This will help me check everyone’s understanding of the stories they read – just like we do during Daily 5 in school when you ‘Read with Teacher’
  • This week we will be learning about ‘Forces and Motion’
  • In your journal, can you write some examples of ways you might use forces? Some ideas I can think of might be: riding your bike, stirring your soup, blowing bubbles or even opening a door! All those actions include a push or a pull motion.
  • Do the assigned activity on your Zorbit account.
  •  Choose a number: 10, 25, 58, or 99 and write that number down on a piece of paper. What number is 2 more? What number is 2 less? What number is 5 more? What number is 5 less? What number is 10 more? What number is 10 less? Record all seven numbers in order from greatest to least.

Supplementary Activities:

  • This week’s class Zoom meeting is on Wednesday April 29thnd at 10:00am – join if you can. The link will be posted on FreshGrade to remain private to only Div. 18. This week, Gr. 1’s are invited to ‘Show and Tell’ one item. Each student will have a few minutes to share and answer questions. Next week we will do Gr.2’s show and tell.
  • I uploaded a video of a ‘Forces and Motion’ experiment I did in my backyard to FreshGrade for everyone to see.  Give it a watch and see if you can make your own ramps to explore the forces of friction and gravity. You can use books, magazines, boxes, paper towel rolls or anything flat to make the ramp, and anything that will roll to push down it such as a toy car, a can or a ball. Try different surfaces! Maybe one of the ramps has a kitchen towel or fabric on it, another might have aluminum foil or clear wrap. Which ramp goes the fastest? Which ramp goes the slowest? How can you change your ramp to change the force and motion? Record your observations in your journal. Here is an example of what you could write –
  • Let’s use a push force to make a painting! You will need some paint, paper, and a straw. Start by adding paint to a paper, then use a straw to push the paint around instead of a paintbrush by blowing at the paint through the straw. You’ll get some pretty silly things! I added some details to mine with a sharpie after my paint dried to make a group of jellyfish. What will yours look like?
  • Go for a walk with your family and see if you can find any examples of forces in action. Some examples might be people pushing bikes or strollers, or pulling open doors, maybe even cherry blossoms falling to the sky. If you want an extra challenge, try to make a list of all the forces you see!

See you at our class zoom soon! 🙂
