Work for Thursday April 30th

  1. Reminder of our Music Class with Mr. Smith at 1:30 today on Zoom, I will see you there! (If you want to skip the writing activity (#6) today so your child only spends 1 hour on school work today that is not a problem.)
  2. Watch the Morning Announcement video, I found it extra funny, there are two guest stars at the end of the video…
  3. Reading:
    1. Grade 1’s: read on Raz Kids, make sure you first listen to the book, then read the book, and finally answer the questions. Please make sure you record several books this week (contact me if you’re not sure how).
    2. Kindergarten’s have someone read to you, or watch a book on Tumblebooks. Make sure you spend 15-20 minutes listening to reading. Some students may also read on Raz Kids.
  4. Watch Make Way for Ducklings (my story for today). After you watch the video, go to this website, and look at photos of the real Boston Public Garden, and the statues of the Ducks from the story, scroll down because they are dressed up in one picture. (I hope to one day go to Boston and see the statues).
  5. Math: Skip Counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s: Kindergarten: Have them orally skip count by 2’s and 5’s to 20, and by 10’s to 100 with support from an adult or older sibling (the more they say it orally, the easier it will become). Grade 1’s: Have them orally skip count by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s to 100.
    1. Printable activity: print 3 copies of the 100’s chart (could be done with 1, but it is more difficult). On the first 100’s chart, skip count by 10’s, and colour in those squares the same colour (this 100’s chart will have 10, 20, 30, 40, etc. all coloured the same colour), on the next 100’s chart do the same thing but count by 5’s (this chart will have 5, 10, 15, 20, etc. all coloured the same colour), on the third 100’s chart skip count by 2’s and colour in the numbers as you go (this chart will have 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, etc all coloured the same colour). If you only want to print one copy, and adult will probably need to do most of the colouring, because all the multiples of 10 will need to be 3 colours, and the multiples of 5 will need to be 2 colours. (Save this paper, because it will be helpful with increasing their ability to skip count independently)
    2. Non-worksheet version: look at the 100’s chart on the computer, point to the numbers as you count by 2’s, 5,s and 10’s. Do you see any patterns on the hundreds chart? Tell you family what you notice. (e.g. in this row all the numbers start with two, or these numbers all end with 7). If you open the PDF, and go to “fill and sign” on the right hand side, it will bring up a few shapes above the 100’s chart (X, check mark, circle, line), you can use these shapes to put a mark on the numbers to identify the multiples of 2, 5, and 10. I attached a sample that I started for multiples of 2 here. If you are doing this, I suggest that you make 3 separate ones, so you can easily look them up again to help with skip counting.
  6. Writing: on your writing page, draw and write about your favourite part of the story Make Way for Ducklings. If you don’t have time for this activity due to Music class today, that is not a problem.

Optional activity:

  1. Count by 10’s using the 100’s chart, but start with a different number, e.g. 7 (so, 7, 17, 27, etc.)
  2. Play math games with your family
  3. Do Story Workshop, or create a story to go with one of Ms. Peters’ Story Workshop photos
  4. Complete a Beginning, Middle and End worksheet for a story someone read to you, or Ms. Peters’ book from today.
