PLAY

After listening to the webinar yesterday on Parenting through the Pandemic I was reminded of the importance of play for all of us.  It inspired me to play and create with my children.  We looked in our house and found some boxes and created something fun.  I encourage you to play with your children, if you have boxes around see what you can build or create, or you can use any materials you have available.  Go PLAY!!  If you would like me to share your creations you can leave a post in the comment section and I can share them with our group.  I will share my creation with you tomorrow.

Here is what we used to make our creation.

Below you can find some more information on the many, many benefits of Play!

You are all doing an AMAZING job!

At Strong Start I always share my thoughts about how you are all doing Amazing work at being parents.  I just wanted to reassure you that even though things have changed, you are still Amazing!!

Life looks different for me right now, so much has changed in our daily life which has given me more time to listen to more webinars and documentaries.  I find I can always take away something new or meaningful.  I wanted to share a few with you, the first one is one Anita suggested called Parenting through the Pandemic.  It is by Vancouver’s own, Dr. Gordon Neufeld, who is a developmental psychologist and author of the book Hold onto Your Kids . I enjoyed watching it and I will share tomorrow how it inspired me.  You can follow the link below if  you are interested in watching it.

I also wanted to share the following webinar that I signed up for.  The description is below,

Parenting in the time of coronavirus? This is NOT what we signed up for. It’s exhausting trying to do all of the things, all the time. These days as parents, we’re all just trying to survive, let alone thrive.

I  also want to  remind you that Anita Olson who used to come visit us at Maywood is also still available to offer her services and she wanted to share the following.

Anita Olson works for Family Services of Greater Vancouver as Burnaby’s Early Childhood Community Consultant (ECCC). She has been working with families and young children for well over a decade and as a parent herself recognizes the challenges, complexity and delight parenting brings. Understanding the foundational importance of infant and early childhood development, Anita shares information, strategies and practical tools with parents as they begin and continue their parental journey. Happy Earth Day

Today is Earth Day, a day for us to focus on the environment and caring for our planet.  Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 making this the 50th Earth Day.  It is celebrated in over 193 countries around the world.  In keeping things simple and meaningful for the children I think today is the perfect day to talk about exploring, discovering and appreciating our natural world.  Currently daily life is different for many of us including myself.  A lot of us right now have more free time and this gift of free time has given me the opportunity to slow down and enjoy the outdoors.  If we want our children to fight for the environment they must first gain an understanding and appreciation for it.  I encourage all of you to go outside and explore.  The best tip I can give you is to allow lots of time for exploration and discovery, and get down and look closely.  So many things are there for us to discover if we just take the time to look.

Below are some of the beautiful images that me and my family found while walking in our neighbourhood.   What can you find on your nature walk?  I encourage you to model using your five senses…. “Wow I can see the beautiful cherry blossoms”  “The bark of this tree feels hard and rough” “I can smell the scent of the fallen pine needles” “I can hear the sounds of a bird” “It isn’t safe to taste many things outside but I can taste the fresh air”  Notice shapes, colours, patterns, and let your child be the guide.  I hope  you have as much fun as we do.  This have become a nightly routine in our family – where each night we go on an adventure to see what beautiful things we can see.

Hello To My Maywood Strong Start Family

When we said our goodbyes and had our last hugs and smiles before Spring Break, I would have never guessed that so much would have changed in such a short amount of time.  I want to tell you that I miss all of your children and I miss you too!  I miss our great conversations and time together, our smiles, laughs and hugs.  I also miss watching your children explore, learn, grow and have fun.  I think about you all often and I hope you are all doing well and staying healthy.  Although I wish we could all be together at Strong Start, right now we have to do what is best for our health and that is to stay home and stay safe.  The greatest gift that Strong Start gives me is watching the happiness it brings to everyone.  My hope is that this blog brings you some of the happiness that we share at Strong Start and also provides you with some new ideas and fun things to do with your family.  Remember we are all in this together and I know that one day we will be back together!

With lots of love,  Ms. Lisa
