Not a Stick

After reading the book the children were inspired to make some creations with sticks.

Once they found the perfect sticks this is what they created

We had a great time creating with sticks.  If you create something at home please send me a picture as I would love to see it!!!

Let’s make some Turkeys

With Thanksgiving coming up this weekend, I thought we could make some cute Thanksgiving Turkeys.  These crafts can get a little messy, but remember mess equals fun!!!

To make this craft you will need

Red, yellow, orange and brown paint ( or whatever colors you want to make your turkey)

Some paper, scissors, glue and googly eyes if you want

Directions

Paint your child’s hand or if they are older they can paint their own hand, and press it onto the paper.  Repeat it with different colors to make the Turkey’s feathers.  Let them dry.

Now you get to paint their foot with brown paint and do the toes in orange and press this onto a different paper and let this also dry.

When they are dry you can let your child, or if they are too small you can cut around the hand prints and foot prints.  Also cut out a tear drop and a beak and let your child glue them on as well as the eye.

Finally glue the feathers (hand prints) on and you have your cute little Turkey.

Another turkey that is also really cute is a Leaf Turkey

.

When you are outside, collect some beautiful leaves off the ground to use as your Turkey’s  feathers and you can create your own Leaf Turkey.

Gobble, Gobble

I have so much to be thankful for, I am also thankful for all the great memories we shared at Strong Start and I can’t wait to see you all again soon!

Happy Thanksgiving 💗 Teacher Lisa

A Blue Whale

Thank you to one of our Strong Start students for sending me this picture of her blue whale.
I wonder if this whale has a story?

If your child has something they want to share, a picture, story or perhaps something you created together, please send it to me.  I love to see your creations.

A picture can tell a story

Yesterday I got to spend the morning in one of the Kindergarten classrooms at Maywood.  A few of the children were drawing pictures, and one child told me the story of her picture.  To see her story follow the link below.  Children love creating stories – whether it be with pictures or through their play.  I encourage you to take the time to sit down and listen and record your child’s stories.

In the upcoming weeks I hope to spend more time with the Kindergarten children and share some of their learning.

Strong Start Families, I would love to see some of your children’s drawings and stories too.  Please send them to me @ lisa.parr@burnabyschools.ca

What can we make with Apples?

Apple Sauce

Apple Sauce is a fun and easy recipe you can make with your children.
If they are older they can help you peel the apples and the little ones will enjoy helping measure and pour in the ingredients.  Everyone  will enjoy helping eat up the delicious apple sauce.

Recipe for homemade apple sauce

4 medium sized apples (peeled, cored and cut into small pieces)

3/4 cup water

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

In a saucepan combine all the ingredients and cook over medium heat for 15 – 20 minutes

Stir it to make sure it doesn’t burn

When the apples are soft (About 15- 20 minutes) turn off the stove and the apples to cool

Then mash it up with a fork or potato masher and enjoy 😊

Let’s make some apple art and sing an apple song

As we all likely have lots of extra toilet paper rolls, why don’t we use them to make some apple stamps?

Squeeze the toilet paper roll making two indents one on the top and one on the bottom and tape it in place.

Then you can dip the roll into paint and make an apple print .  You can also add tree branches and fill in the apples.

Have fun !

Happy Fall

Yesterday, September 22nd marked the first day of Fall.  Saying goodbye to summer is  hard for me, as you all know, I love the sun and warmth and being outside.  However there are many wonderful things I love about fall.  Over the next little while I will share some of my favorite things about Fall.

Apples

Can you guess how many different varieties of apples exist in the world?

You’re not going to see this many kinds of apples in the grocery store, but there are 7,500 varieties of apples in existence throughout the world!!

One of the most commonly eaten fruits is the apple (other than the banana). In fact, the average Canadian eats approximately 86 apples a year.

Something me and my family enjoy doing every fall is going to pick fresh apples off the trees at the farm.  Since my girls were just babies we have gone every year to Taves Family Farm.  It is a wonderful place to spend the day.  You can enjoy picking some apples, or a pumpkin, visit the many animals on the farm, and jump on my daughters favorite, the jumping pillow.  If you have time and are looking for something fun to do, I definitely recommend it.  If you can’t make it out there, as it is a bit of a drive, the next time you are at the grocery store I encourage you to by one of each apple – and give them all a try!

Welcome Back

Hello Strong Start Families

I hope you all had a safe and healthy summer and enjoyed lots of fun outside in the sun.  My family and I had a wonderful summer together,  spending lots of time at the beach and creating so many great memories together.  We enjoyed watching many sunsets and the above picture was one of my favourites.  It was so wonderful to come back to Maywood a few weeks ago to welcome all our new Kindergarten children to Kindergarten.  I have spent the last little while in the Kindergarten classrooms and it has been great to be back at the school!   Seeing the excitement in all the children makes me so happy.  I miss all of  you and all of your children and I truly hope we get to be back together soon.  But in the meantime I will continue with updating the blog and sending out emails.  Also if you would like to get in touch with me anytime please email me at lisa.parr@burnabyschools.ca  I know the question on everyone’s mind is WHEN will Strong Start be open in person again???  Unfortunately currently we don’t have an answer to that, but please see the latest message from the school board below, and as soon as we have more information we will definitely let you know…

In September 2020, Burnaby StrongStart BC programs will continue to engage in outreach to families via emails, phone calls, and offering StrongStart services online.

There is currently no in-person StrongStart BC programs in Burnaby Schools.

We are looking into a variety of options that will enable us to offer in-person StrongStart BC programs. Programs will be at reduced capacity that are consistent with Stage 2 of the K-12 Education Restart Plan. “Reduced capacity” means that we will limit the number of families attending in order to maintain safe physical distancing. We will also reduce the number of hours per day and/or days per week of StrongStart BC operations to accommodate cleaning and disinfecting protocols.

Please continue to visit our website for the latest updates. We look forward to when we can welcome you back in person!

Sending you all a big bear hug goodbye

It is hard to believe that our year together at Strong Start has come to an end!  I am left with so many feelings.  I am sad that our time together was cut short and that I missed spending the last few months with all of you and especially the children graduating Strong Start.  I am also sad that we never got to have our end of the year hugs and goodbyes.  But I am so grateful for all the wonderful times we shared together this year and that we stayed safe and healthy!!!  I feel happy when I think of all the joy you and your children brought me this year!!  I wish my graduating Strong Start children a wonderful, fun, and exciting year in Kindergarten.  I know you will all make so many new friends and have a great time.  And to our Strong Start family, stay healthy and safe and have a wonderful summer making memories with your families.  I can’t wait to play with you all again soon!!  Check the Burnaby School Board website for updates regarding the re-opening of Strong Start in the fall.   Until we meet again I am sending you all a great big bear hug and lots and lots of love!! 💗Mrs. Lisa
