Our Learning This Week! (March 1-5)

Here are pictures of some activities from this week in Division 16.

Healthy Eating

This week we continued our Healthy Eating Unit. We read some books together on Epic about making Healthy Choices and Eating the Rainbow. We then drew our Healthy Lunch of Choice. We have also been playing Fruit & Vegetable Guess Who, a new class favourite!

Spring Art

This week for Art we followed a video to learn how to draw 3 Spring Flowers (Daisy, Tulip & Daffodil). We focused on taking our time when following the instructions and colouring in the lines with our pencil crayons. They turned out fantastic! I have attached the video as lots of students wanted to practice their flowers.

 

Independent Work

Here are some pictures of the independent work students do during Reading Groups. This week we reviewed taking our time and making sure we do our best work.

Subtraction

This week we focused on Subtraction. We used pictures and counters to help us solve our subtraction sentences.

Vowel Teams

This week we looked at the Long E Vowel Teams (ea and ee).

We also listened to this song and video to help us remember our vowel team rules. It’s very catchy and we were singing it all afternoon.

Story Workshop

This week during Story Workshop, we created our stories in the Library. Back in the classroom we wrote about our Setting and Main Character.

It’s Ok To Be Different!

on Pink Shirt Day, we read the book Its OK To Be Different written by Todd Parr. The Grade 1’s used an app on the iPad to create a picture similar to those seen in the book, and decided on their own It’s okay sentence. In the afternoon, we printed them out and coloured them using bright colours. They are hanging up in our classroom!

100th Day of School! (February 16 – 19)

100th Day of School!

Friday was the 100th day of school, and the class has been very excited to celebrate it together. We did lots of activities all about the number 100.

Journals & Buddy Letters

On Tuesday we wrote in our Journals about the Long Weekend, and on Wednesday we made All About Me books for our Buddies in Grade 4. The Grade 1’s enjoyed getting letters and pictures from their Big Buddies.

Technology Time

This week we learned how to use an app called Draw and Tell. With a partner, the Grade 1’s worked together to create a setting, add characters, and record a short story to share with the class.

Word Problems & Digraphs

This week during Phonics we reviewed our Digraph Sounds. In Math we learned how to read a Word Problem and use our Addition strategies to solve the problem in many ways.

This Weeks Learning! (February 8-12)

Number Bonds & Math Centers

This week we learned how to make Number Bonds to go with our Addition Sentences. We also tried some new Addition Math Centers

New Math Card Game

Every Wednesday afternoon we play a Math Game. This week we learned how to play a new Card Game called Make Ten! Ask your child how to play this game at home. It is lots of fun!

Valentines Day & Lunar New Year Art

This week we made Love Bots to hold our Valentines Day Cards. We also watched a video and read a book to help us learn more about Lunar New Year! The Grade 1’s picked if they wanted to make a New Years Zodiac lantern of an Ox (this years animal) or the Horse (their Animal).

Story Workshop – Wordless Books

In partners, students were given a wordless picture book. Together they decided what was happening in the story by looking at only the pictures. Then they created the story using their Loose Parts. Story Workshop is a great way to use our creativity and learn to work together when we have different ideas.

Silent E

This week in during Phonics we learned about Silent E words. We will continue to practice Silent E next week.

Valentines Day Cards for Seton Villa

The Grade 1’s were so excited to make Valentines Day Cards for the Seniors at Seton Villa. They carefully printed their letters to make sure the Seniors could read them.

Counting On

This week we used a new addition strategy called Counting On. We used our fingers and brain to count on from the biggest number to find our answer.

Journals

Our Morning Meeting question on Tuesday was to share our favourite season. We wrote our answers in our Journals this week.

Learning to Edit & Displaying our Work

We used an editing checklist to check our work for our Animal research Project.

Addition Yahtzee

The Grade 1’s learned how to play a new addition game called Yahtzee.

Read Alouds

We read lots of books together this week. Mrs. D our noon hour supervisor also came in to read us a story. Our favourite read aloud stories have been Robert Munsch books! Here are some of the stories we have enjoyed.

My Heart is Full

Together as a class we talked about something we love to do that makes our heart feel full. We wrote our idea down, and then filled our heart with things we love.  Here is some of our finished work. We will keep working on these next week and they will be displayed in our classroom this February.

Animal Research

Students continued working on their Animal Research project. This week we did our Habitat and Diet pages. We also played a Matching Game to learn what bears eat before they hibernate.

Structures and Cities Workshop

We had so much fun learning about structures and Cities in our Zoom Lesson with the Burnaby Art Gallery. After the lesson students built their own structure from recycled materials. They enjoyed sharing their creations with our Burnaby Art Gallery teacher Mona on the computer.

Story Workshop!

The Grade 1’s had their first Story Workshop on Tuesday. Every other week we will use loose parts to create stories with our classmates. They were so creative, and shared their stories with the class.

Winter Sunset Art

Addition

This week we are learning about different ways to solve addition. We practiced solving problems using pictures and Ten Frames. Next week we will learn new strategies. We also learned how to play an addition game called Snowman Bump!

Animals in Winter

We finished our Bulletin Board by adding animals that migrate in the winter. We also made our Covers for our Animal Research Projects.

New Year’s Goals Writing and Art Activity

On Wednesday we created New Years Goals that are hanging up in our classroom.

Reading & Writing

Here are some pictures of our learning during Reading Groups and our Journal Writing this week. We wrote about our Winter Break.

Animals In Winter

This week we learned that animals do different things to survive the winter. We created a Bulletin Board in our classroom to show animals that adapt and animals that hibernate. Next week we will learn about animals that migrate.

Hello  Families,

Here are pictures of our learning from this week. We had so much fun celebrating the last week before Winter Break!

Writers Workshop!

The Grade 1’s were very busy this week practicing their writing. We made Holiday cards for loved ones on Tuesday, and wrote letters to our Buddies on Wednesday. They were so excited to learn their Big Buddies names and read their Buddies letter. They took their time to write neatly so their Buddy could read it.

Indigenous Education

Mrs. Paulich read the story You Hold Me Up, and the class brainstormed ways others around them Hold Them Up. This beautiful display is outside our classroom.

Holiday Activities

This week we continued our Holidays Around the World Activities. We visited Mexico, Sweden and England this week. We read books from each country. Ms. Ramirez read our book for Mexico, and taught us some Spanish words! We drew in our Passports and made Poinsettia Art on our Gift Bags using sponges. The students were very excited to wrap their gift they made last week for their families.
