December in the Classroom!

Here are some photos from our classroom this month!

Art

This month we created Christmas Trees and Reindeer to decorate our classroom and the Gym. The students also did some writing to tell us more about their Reindeer.

Reading & Writing

This month in Story Workshop we have been working on creating characters and settings in our stories. In January we will begin to write stories with a beginning, middle, and end. Students are learning to work independently at their tables while a small group reads together during our Reading Groups.

Graphing

In December we have been learning about Graphing in Math. We made classroom graphs and answered questions about the information we collect. It’s a great way to learn more about our classmates.

Winter Celebrations

Each day during Calendar, students open up a secret paper to reveal a picture of an item used in a Winter celebration. The Grade 1’s have 10 minutes to create that item out of play dough. We also read and watched stories to learn more about different Holidays celebrated around the world. Here are some photos of a Menorah, Unity Cup, and Ornaments that students created.

More Fun!

We watched a Movie with Ms. Gracia’s class and did some fun Body Breaks!

Fun in Grade 1! (November)

Here are some photos of our learning in Division 16 this month. Please use the photos to talk with your child about their learning! Please click on the photos to enlarge them.

Reading & Letters

This month we finished reviewing our letters, and have started our Reading Groups. Students also used their Reading Bins to review what they have learned. The Grade 1’s got to show their Grade 5 & 6 Buddies how they read during Flashlight Friday!

Writing & Story Workshop

Students have been practicing breaking apart the sounds they hear in words. They also made a Todd Parr inspired Peace Book where they shared what peace means to them. During Story Workshop, the Grade 1’s created their own stories using loose parts. They get to share those stories orally to their classmates, focusing on including characters and a setting.

Math

In November, students have been learning to add using lots of different tools to help us (loose parts, ten frames, fingers, counting on and number lines). We also played lots of math games to help build our number sense.

Science

This month we learned about leaves and apples! After going on a leaf hunt, we picked our favourite leaf and found out its name. We have been learning all about apples, and even did some taste testing, experiments and building using them.

Social Studies

This month we learned about a holiday celebrated in Mexico called Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). We also made a Poppy Wreath for Remembrance Day with our Big Buddies.

Magical Doors!

The Grade 1’s have been busy creating magic doors for our creative writing. Check out the fun we have been having.

Door Design

In the Library, we watched a presentation about magical fairy doors and read a great wordless picture book about a magical door. Then the Grade 1’s got to design their door on paper.

Creating

We painted and added extra parts to make our door look unique.

Forest Walk

We went on a walk in the forest to find a special place to put our doors and take a picture.

Creating our Stories

Students had the choice to begin writing their stories or to create their story using loose parts before writing them down. They are working so hard to create their magical stories.

Our Classroom Tour! (Student – Led Conference)

1. Take your Family on a Tour of our Classroom!

Here are some pictures of our classroom. The Grade 1’s have been practicing their Classroom Tour and are excited to tell you all about the important areas in our room.

The 100th Day of School and More!

100th Day

During Morning Meeting, students decided what they would want 100 of. We also made 100 days smarter medals to wear.

100th Day Math

After putting the 100th sticker on our classroom calendar, we made a graph to decide which jar had 100 items in it. We also played a Race to 100 games with our classmates.

When I Am 100 Writing

Using magic, we turned all the Grade 1’s into 100 year olds. After spending some time looking at all of our funny pictures and laughing, we wrote what we thought we would do when we are 100 years old.  They are excited to bring these home next month to show you what they will look like when they are older!
