Pink: Old entries that students are still struggling with
Red: New entries
L’accord:
- Always check the gender (masc ou féminin) of the word! Here’s the link to a website that will tell you the gender of most words in the French language without having to look them up in a dictionary
- l’année passée – this is feminin. Don’t forget the two “e”‘s
- “tout” has to agree with the word that follows it. Ex/ tout le monde, toutes les personnes, tous les mardis, toute la journée
Anglicismes:
- faire du camping (not “aller camping” – this is an anglicisme from the English phrase “go camping”)
- J’ai 12 ans (not je suis 12 ans) – the same goes for past tense (ex/ quand j’avais 2 ans, not quand j’étais 2 ans)
Homophones:
- a vs. à – “a” is the verb “avoir” “à” is the preposition “to” If you’re not sure look at its position in the sentence.
- On vs. En vs. Ont – “On” is the pronoun (ex/ on a fait les devoirs) “En” is the preposition (ex/ Je suis allé en Italie) “Ont” is the verb avoir (ex/ Ils ont un chien).
- Sa vs.Ça – Sa chemise (shows possession – who owns it) Ça me fait peur (pronoun – goes in front a verb, similar to “it” in English
- Son vs. Sont – Son chandail (shows possession – who own it) Ils sont gentils (verbe être)
Verbes:
- Moi et Marie = nous (not ils). ex/ Moi et Marie sommes allées (not sont allées)
- 2nd verb doesn’t get conjugated ex/ J’aime faire des sports (not j’aime fait des sports) Je peux manger toute la pizza (not je peux mangé) Je veux venir (not je veux venu)
- Passé composé : Il a parlé (not il à parler)
- Naître au passé-composé : Je suis né(e), Il est né (not j’étais né, il était né)
