Creating a Setting with Loose Parts
In story workshop, students first create a setting to pave the way for making their story involving characters and events. It is here that they start using imagination while exploring the different materials to create the place where their story happens.
Creating a Home Collection of Loose Parts
At school, we have a selection of loose parts which are natural materials such as pine cones, small wooden cubes and spools, and shells. For story making at home, children can assemble their own collection of materials consisting of toys or other small objects. Here are some things for building a setting.
Story Characters
Students can look through their toy box to see if there are items that can represent people or animal characters.
Mrs. Hon’s Collection of Loose Parts
I managed to gather some small objects and toys around my home and put them in an old shoe box. When I discover a new object to inspire story making, I can add it to my loose parts collection.
