Literacy

Literacy time encompasses a variety of language-based activities to engage students in reading, writing and developing their oral language skills.

Novel Study: Fantastic Mr. Fox
 
Students will identify elements of a story such as characters, plot and setting, and practise using reading comprehension strategies.

Visualizing: This comprehension strategy involves listening to the read aloud text and making mental pictures of the characters or story events.
Chapter 1 – Visualizing & drawing appearance and personalities of Farmer Boggis, Farmer Bunce and Farmer Bean
Chapter 10 – Imagining and drawing a tunnel map of Mr. Fox’s escape

Predicting/Inferencing:  Making a prediction or inference support by reasons, whether or not the Famers will catch Mr. Fox in Chapter 2 & 3

Retelling:  The practise of recalling story details and sequence of events
Chapter 1 & 2 – Using their knowledge of adjectives, students were asked to write a short descriptive paragraph about the main character, Mr. Fox.
Chapters 4-7 – Retelling the problems Mr. Fox encountered and solutions he had

Reader’s Theatre:  Students read aloud dialogue for main characters in Chapter 10.

Summarizing:  Using own words, students were asked to write about the main idea including story climax in Chapter 13.

Extension ActivityThe novel ends with Mr. Fox enjoying a grand feast with his family and friends.  Students were asked to visualize and write planning their own feast.
