Every Friday Division 9 & 10 get together to work on Second Step. Second Step is a program that teaches children skills for social and academic success.

Our topic is:  Emotional Management.

This weeks lesson:  Managing Frustrations

Lesson Concepts:

  • Feelings vary in strength.
  • Feelings that are strong need to be managed.
  • Saying “Stop” and naming your feelings are ways to begin to calm down.

Let’s learn how to calm down strong feelings. Think about a time you felt frustrated. You can be a little bit frustrated or very frustrated. When you are very frustrated, you’re having a strong feeling.  Frustrated feelings can happen when you’re trying to do something hard or learning something new. Maybe you’re doing a puzzle, and the pieces won’t fit together.  Maybe you are trying to get your parents attention and they are busy at that time.  Being frustrated is an uncomfortable feeling.  That uncomfortable feeling is a clue that you need to calm down.

Think, turn, tell: Tell your grown up about a time that you felt frustrated.  Some examples are:

  • You can’t figure out how to do a math problem.
  • You tore a hole in your favourite pants.
  • You are cutting out a star, and you have cut off one of the points.
  • You can’t zip up  your coat.
  • Someone just took your turn on the swing.

Practice putting your hands on your tummy, to check in with your body.  Say STOP! and name your feeling.

Now let’s listen to “The Calm-Down Song.”  Sing along to the chorus if you can.  Put your hands on your tummy and say “Stop” when you hear “tummy” and “stop.”

Remember to go to Ms. Quin’s Blog for week three of music and movement activities.

Last week we talked about what it meant to be a citizen of a community.  Remember a  citizen is a person who lives in a community and has certain rights and responsibilities.

I asked,  As a Citizen, what can you do?   Here are some thoughts from your friends:

  • “I can draw and help other when they need it.” – Ajay
  • “I can spread joy.” – Cameron
  • “I can help others draw.” – Eliza
  • “I can give blankets to people in need.”  – Emma
  • “I can reuse, reduce and recycle.” – Ethan
  • “I can help others when they fall.” – Jose
  • “I can help my mom and dad.” – Xander

A community is a place where people live, work and play.

There are different types of communities:  Some people live in a Rural community.  Many people live in a Suburb.  And lots of people live in a Urban community.  What type of community do you live in?

People live in different kinds of homes:

Some people live in an apartment, duplex, townhouse or a house.  Can you match the kind of home to the picture?  What kind of home do you live in?

Toby and Riley live in a townhouse with their human, Ms. Gourlay.

Draw a picture of your home.  Remember to add lots of colour and details.

My Home
