“The chicks have feelings.” – Ty

[metaslider id=4656]

The chicks have been teaching us how to identify emotions based on visual clues.  Over time, the children became better at reading if the chicks were happy, sad, angry etc. by watching their bodies.  The children could tell when the chicks felt comfortable (bodies were relaxed) or upset (peeped loudly and stiffened their bodies).  The children were also able to balance their desire to watch the chicks explore the carpet with noticing when the chicks were tired and needed a rest in their brooder.

Being able to feel or understand what another person is feeling helps students to better manage their own feelings and solve problem with others.

The eggs have hatched!  We have three baby chicks in our classroom.  When the chicks hatched, they were wet and exhausted from pecking through the shell.  In a couple of hours, the chicks were dry and sleeping.  But the next day, they were running around. Wow!

The chicks are very different.   The yellow chick’s name is Daisy.  She is loud and bossy.  The black and yellow chick’s name is Suzie.  She has feathers on her legs.  Suzie is an escape artist.  She likes to try to jump out of her brooder.  The all black chick (legs too) is called Iris.  She is the calmest one and likes to cuddle.

We have learned that the chicks need food, water, shelter and space in order to survive.  We look forward to caring for them.

We have three eggs in our classroom.  The eggs are in an incubator in our classroom.  The incubator keeps the eggs warm and turns the eggs so that the insides don’t stick to the shell.  The eggs are teaching us about oviparous animals.  Oviparous animals are animals hatched from eggs.  We know that many animals hatch from eggs, such as birds and reptiles.

We noticed that the eggs have different colored shells, dark brown, pale green and light brown.  We can also see inside the egg with a special scope.  The scope enables us to see what is happening as the animal develops.  In our first observation, we saw an air pocket at one end of the egg.  We were also able to see a black dot which is the heart, and little red lines on the yolk.  These red lines carry food from the yolk to the animal.

We wonder what kind of animals will hatch from the eggs?  Snake?  Turtle?  Chicken?  Dinosaur?
