Our Hats

The children of Division 12 were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to learn how to use looms to knit themselves a hat.

As described in the learning standards of the Applied Design, Skills and Technology Curriculum, the children are expected to choose a tool and material, and make a product through the modelling of others. Our special guest, Ms. Janet Chow showed the children how to use the loom and wool to create a hat. The children demonstrated lots of patience and perseverance throughout the whole process. They felt very proud of themselves when they were finished.

Ava has been talking about the “hat” she made for more than a week. Wow! I am so amazed with the finished work. Thank you for introducing them the knitting techniques. So proud with their work!

It’s been an honour to sit alongside these problem solvers as they navigate dexterity in fine motor control, patience and discoveries bout themselves as learners. Although one can say it’s just knitting, it is more than that. It is math patterning, creativity and story embedded in every stitch. Thank you Ms. Gourlay in bringing the power of ADST into the class environment.

Sophie brought home the hat and I thought she had taken someone else’s hat. the hats are amazing. I need Sophie to teach me how to knit! Thank you for sharing their great accomplishments!
